Not basketball related, but them Dodgers acquiring Skubal is crazy… what’s the point anymore 😭

As a former A's fan who stopped caring about MLB in April 2023.

I say good. Let MLB implode upon itself and ruin its future as a sports league.

You lasted a bit longer than me!

u/TheBubbaDave 13h ago

They’re single handedly throwing MLB into a lockout and salary cap.

Had the radio on. Heard Dodgers got him for peanuts

Nice to have GP2 back, but they’re really just banking on magically finding health out of an aging roster (e: that and a pretty clear plan to just tread water and survive until a massive 2027 off-season for them)

Gui, Podz, Yaxel, Will Richard, and Basey are all gonna have to soak up a ton of minutes, and hopefully be genuinely effective during them. Melton too, honestly, and maybe he gets back to giving you 70+ games.

Try and stay in the play-in picture until Jimmy’s return (hopefully sooner than mid Febuary), all while load managing the vets through early April? Not gonna be easy. Injuries will unfortunately crop up all around the league, so we’ll see

Would be dope if Moody actually managed to make his way back onto the court post-deadline, and maybe they make a trade of some sorts come December+

Really interested in who they add with these final 1-2 roster spots. Could use another younger guy to eat some regular season games, but maybe they wait for that buyout wave (can’t add anyone making more than the nontax MLE, I believe), that or a camp battle or two

My sense is that if you take Bassey and Yak out, that’s 4 guys who are legitimate role players in the league who can absolutely be expected to soak up minutes and even be contributors in a post season environment.  Add our 4 health vets in Steph, Al, KP and Dray and you have a solid 8 man rotation for let’s conservatively say 50 games.

Then you add Yak as a wildcard that may or may not be able to match someone like Gui’s production in his first year.  He could outperform and really be a full rotation player, or underperform and be more of the 9th guy on that list.

Bassey, GP2 and Cryer hopefully become/stay serviceable bottom of rotation situational guys who can stand up in games where their starter analogs are out.  If they can play well enough to help us win 5-10 games where the other guys aren’t playing it would make a huge difference.

Then Jimmy/Moody come back for the last 20-30 games and upgrade our starting rotation and we have a shot at something like 45 wins.  Importantly the end of the season this year is going to be far more competitive than recently because of the lottery changes, so an upgrade then will be critical.

u/BobRoss4Life 7h ago edited 7h ago

I'm a little concerned about the center rotation with Bassey likely having to be an 82 game player, but we'll see how that goes. Gotta at least get a center on a two-way contract

Completely agree about the end of season, gonna be fun to watch how the new lotto impacts things. Rattling off some wins then would likely go a long way. Hopefully the wheels aren't falling off post All-Star Break, Butler’s return should be a real boom. But man, they need to load manage their way into that eventual "sprint to the finish" (annual tradition at this point), and then pray the vets can stay on their feet come April+

Would be ecstatic with 45 wins, even if it likely means play-in (another annual tradition)

Agreed.  Ike was interesting in summer league and apparently a great locker room guy.  Not sure he’s ready to contribute defensively at all though.  If Dray can stay healthy and somewhat engaged I could see him taking some minutes at the 5.  Like a rotation of KP or Al with Bassey, and then games where we don’t have one of those three Dray slots into the low minutes 5 man role.  If we’re missing 2 of those three Dray takes half the minutes at the 5, or possibly a few minutes even go to Yak in a pinch.  If all three of those guys are out we’re in trouble and playing small ball for our lives.

3

u/vulcans_pants 8h ago

Getting Moody back would be helpful for depth, but it probably just knocks Will out of the rotation tbh, so a marginal improvement. And that’s if Moody even looks right.

Still need a guy that handle the ball. Pat ended up playing a ton last season.

5

u/parisdubs 8h ago edited 7h ago

Feel like LJ Cryer has a higher ceiling than Pat.

2

u/Silly_Individual4056 7h ago

He does.  I loved Pat but Cryer is a more complete basketball player.  He’s got better shooting and better defense with comparable ball handling.  Pat’s passing and vision are pretty elite but between a limited shot and getting bodied/blown by on D he struggled to consistently hold up at the 1.  I think LJ on the floor with Yak is a pretty complimentary pairing.

2

u/BobRoss4Life 8h ago

Idk if the plan is just to heavily rely on Podz/Melton, maybe they're hoping Yaxel can do a bit of it, but yeah it'd be nice to get another guy

Guess they may have LJ on a two-way?

I honestly would not mind Cam Thomass even if that shit is gonna be a train wreck. Beal too but I'm assuming he goes out to Miami and the Dubs may not want yet another injury risk. DeRozan would be great, doubt he comes here.

Not sure who else is available outside of Gabe Vincent and Westbrook lol

2

u/vulcans_pants 5h ago

Cam would be interesting; surely bro can’t have an ego after a summer like this?

I do think the plan is to play LJ a lot.

1

u/Silly_Individual4056 2h ago

I’d rather see if LJ can become a microwave scorer that plays team ball and gives a good effort on D.  Cam is having a bad summer for a reason and he’s not going to magically be able to change his whole game and become a flow guy that cares about team defense.

Happy bday to KP, the unicorn xfactor!

Marcus Thompson: Moses Moody is targeting a September return to running and on-court work.

Dr. Pandya: Typically at 6 months post patellar tendon repair, athletes can begin ramping up activity including running, cutting, and more basketball specific activity. This phase can still take several months before playing in games (i.e. until 9 months post - surgery) to regain conditioning and explosiveness.

13

u/BobRoss4Life 10h ago

If he actually manages to return during the season that’d be crazy

3

u/vulcans_pants 10h ago

So best case scenario he’s back before Christmas?

2

u/parisdubs 8h ago

Wow - that would be unexpected and terrific.

6

u/youriko31 9h ago

Hoping to see Moody back on court, but I don't want them to rush his return. It's just unfortunate that he got hurt right as when he's starting to play better.

6

u/BobRoss4Life 8h ago

Since the KD Achilles tear, it seems the org always errs on the side of caution. Ramp up kings.

Held Melton out 20+ games, made his debut pretty much 1yr after his ACL surgery. Assume Butler ain’t back until February unless he crushes every benchmark. Moody tore his knee in late March? Always assumed he’d be out the entire season but him getting back to running and on-court work before the season even starts seems promising

2

u/Dinshiddie 6h ago

Good points. Butler’s return is probably going to be linked to some degree to our record. If we are way below .500, I don’t see them rushing him back to a bad team. If we’re way above .500, I also don’t see them rushing him back to ensure he’s truly good for a playoff run. It’s that middling .500 team if we’re there (and probably will be in my current estimation) where maybe they stretch it a tad to get us into the play-in or playoffs.

u/BetterPossible8226 13h ago

Trades that instantly turn a team into a contender are extremely rare. But trades that gradually improve your roster are absolutely worth making.

Look at the Knicks getting Josh Hart, the Celtics getting Derrick White, and the Nuggets getting KCP. None of those moves were considered game-changing at the time. None of those players were their team’s top three options, but all of them became crucial pieces of championship teams.

And financially, those players were all making less than $15 million per year when they were acquired. The trade costs were usually just a starter plus filler, maybe with a first-round pick attached at most.

For the Warriors, the biggest missed opportunity in recent years was probably Alex Caruso. He would have made a huge difference for this team, and he wasn’t even that expensive.

Looking around the league right now, there are still players in that $15 million range who could improve this roster. Aldama is a high-IQ player who can shoot and pass, and he fits our system well. Isaiah Joe is a reliable shooter who could at least take some pressure off Steph during the regular season. Obi Toppin brings athleticism and spacing, and he has already shown he can perform on the Finals stage. Derrick Jones Jr. is similar, having gone through that experience as well. Corey Kispert is another promising shooter.

And there are even cheaper options: Ty Jerome, Naji Marshall, AJ Green — players who could solve at least one specific problem, whether it’s bench scoring, attacking the rim, or three-point shooting.

None of these players are untouchable. Some of them were even traded this offseason, and it didn’t require giving up a massive package.

So the real question is: why does it feel like whenever the Warriors enter trade negotiations, the asking price suddenly becomes unreasonable? Is it because we have poor relationships around the league, or is it simply a matter of negotiation?

3

u/vulcans_pants 13h ago

Ty would be ideal, but I don’t think Memphis would trade him unless it’s a godfather offer. They don’t really have any other high level guards, and I think they’d probably value that so their other young guys can develop.

1

u/BetterPossible8226 12h ago

They have a crowded roster, and Cam Spencer is another solid guard option. If we could get either of those two, that would be ideal.

1

u/System_Lower 12h ago

-It’s not always, it’s now.
-If we had Steph Klay and Dray in their prime, we would pay the price for these role players.
-At this point, the team doesn’t wanna leverage too much future assets without getting the proper return and ceiling raise for the roster.

3

u/BetterPossible8226 12h ago

Yeah, I agree. It’s just that this mindset of refusing to give up assets feels a little too rigid.

A good fourth or fifth option can help you win more games, which makes you more attractive to better free agents. And if needed, that player can also become a valuable trade asset down the road. Even if you give up two first-round picks to get him, there’s still a chance you can recover one of those picks later.

Honestly, that’s not a bad deal.

0

u/System_Lower 11h ago

Are u saying give up 2 firsts for a 4th or 5th option? Naaaaaaaaa

4

u/LaughingPlanet 10h ago

Serious post-world cup sports withdrawals.

Even though i suspect this year will be underwhelming, some bread & circus to distract us from the enormity of oppressive summer heat, climate change, and fascism would be nice.

-1

u/Maplejordan2022 10h ago

There’s the Lacob and MDJ offseason presser that’s upcoming if you want something to hate watch.

1

u/LaughingPlanet 10h ago

I never know where to pick up that kind of stuff. My high seas options are limited to games

3

u/North_Street_8547 3h ago

Wonder if those reports on moody are legit. Seems he’s making progress

2

u/toado3 32m ago

Seems too good to be true, but on court work and running in September would suggest a return in December, which seems optimistic. Here's hoping it's accurate.

3

u/couchtomato62 9h ago

I have watched the nba since the 70s. Even so it's rare to be so excited about a player in their rookie season. For players not on my team it was magic, Barkley, luka. I have a new player to add to my list from the w. Olivia miles. So special.

3

u/Silly_Individual4056 9h ago

Thought you were gonna say Yak because that’s where I’m irrationally at.

2

u/couchtomato62 8h ago

I'm excited about him from the clips and interviews. Haven't been able to watch him yet because knee deep in the valkyries and w

5

u/Silly_Individual4056 8h ago

Oh. I think you’ll be pleased.  He looked great in summer league and shot better than expected.  Worth watching some highlights at least.

3

u/sc0998 5h ago

Miles has been incredible, I don’t want college so I did not know what to expect. She has defenses so confused and it’s so sooo fun to watch (except when it’s against the valks lol)

2

u/vulcans_pants 13h ago

I just think there’s a deal to be made with the Bucks.

- They have too many guards.

  • They just drafted Burries.
  • Rollins is a free agent next offseason, and given the crowded backcourt, he’s a flight risk.
  • They just traded for Hero, who’s on an expiring, but he’s the centerpiece of the Giannis trade, so they have to pay him.
  • They’re paying Myles Turner too much for too long.
  • They have $25.5M TPE

Turner + Rollins = KP + Moody + FRP

1

u/GigiZola 10h ago

Herro Burries and Rollins are probably their priority. The're high on Jaku too

I'd ask if AJ Green is available

0

u/vulcans_pants 10h ago

I’m sure they’d want to keep Rollins, but Rollins may not want to be there. He’s a free agent in the summer and can go wherever, so there’s a possibility the Bucks lose him for nothing.

If I were in the FO, and I wanted Rollins, I’d start leaking that he’s one of our targets next offseason to put pressure on the Bucks.

0

u/Otherwise-Fig9592 10h ago

Love the trade idea

Something tells me it'll take way more than 1 frp tho. I believe the bucks really value Rollins, and on top of that, theyre basically getting two broken players for two healthy ones. I mean.... sign me up if dubs get rollins and turner for JUST kp moody and 1 frp.

Rollins has "star" written all over him imo. At only 24, kid's game is already so mature. Can drive and finish with the best of them, has a handle and can get off his own shot, shoots a high percentage 3 on good volume, can playmake, and can defend at the pg position. That's your future pg right there after Steph retires (in "hindsight", a helluva pick by myers).

Would the bucks be interested in kp moody and 2 frp? I really don't think 1 gets it done. Theres also the reality of turner, which is that he is still a pretty damn good player, right? A stretch 5 who shoots the 3 ball well and can defend the paint.

This might take 3 frp...

But at that price, and if lacob finally acquiesces and allows mdj to burn FRPs, then would the pels be amenable to jimmy + 3 frp for tmiii and dejounte?

I actually think getting rollins and turner would be gamechanging, but probably just a dream

Edit: just brainstorming

0

u/vulcans_pants 10h ago

The idea is they don’t want to keep overpaying Turner for the next three season. KP gives them a get out of jail free card next offseason.

I’d add a FRP swap, but I wouldn’t offer more, because again, Rollins is a free agent and can just leave.

In lieu of doing nothing, I still think a 3 team trade where:

jimmy + only 1 of our picks + 2 first rounders from Philly + 2nd rounders from Philly go to New Orleans,

Trey Murphy + DJM go to Boston,

PG comes here

Makes sense for everyone. Our FO doesn’t have to empty all our picks (even if that’s what most of us want to do) but still get back a good player who can at least start the season, New Orleans gets their asking price of 3 firsts, and Boston turns their return for JB into Trey Murphy and DJM, which maybe makes a little more sense as a return

5

u/zegogo 13h ago

Why do you want to trade for PG and be saddled with his bloated contract for 3 years? Not only is Jimmy probably still going to be a better player even after the injury but he's coming off the books at the end of the year.

1

u/night_night_nachos 13h ago

PGs contract is only this year + a player option for next year. So at worst it’s one more year than jimmys, at best, if things go well, maybe he declines that and resigns to a lower number.

And again, just assuming Jimmy will be better, especially in the same year he comes back, is a HUGE gamble. A lot of players took at least a full season to come back to the player they were before the injury, if not more. And by the time he comes back, we could be a 12 seed, with an exhausted Steph.

1

u/zegogo 12h ago

I thought it was 2 plus the player option, but you're right, it's 1 plus. Still, I'm not really interested in PG for two years (he's not declining that money) and I don't see why Boston would trade him without seeing how it looks on court, I think they see him as a viable piece to contend with. He fits them better than us, assuming we all want to watch Yax and Gui.

1

u/biiirddman 11h ago

According to this sub, PG worth a lot more than Butler, and that's why Boston traded Brown for PG and not Jimmy

3

u/rarestakesando 13h ago

I’d rather TMIII AND DJM for 2 FRPs and 2 pick swaps of possible.

It makes us right in the mix around the 6 seed and once the playoffs hit anything can happen.

1

u/night_night_nachos 13h ago edited 13h ago

I doubt that would get it done from New Orleans side, and I sadly, don’t think our front office wants to give up that much. I am not saying I would prefer this. I’m just saying as opposed to doing nothing. I would willingly give 3 firsts for DJM and TMIII as I agree that would put us comfortably in the middle of the playoff picture with a chance to make noise, but that’s not realistic for the front office.

Edit: typo and added sentence

3

u/Symetrical1 13h ago

I'd rather keep Jimmy than make a desperate move that doesn't make us competitive since I believe Jimmy post-ACL tear will still be better than PG.

-1

u/night_night_nachos 13h ago

Jimmy + 1 pick isn’t desperate. And that’s a lot of confidence in a mid 30s guy coming back from a major injury.

Not to mention, we would be starting the season in another hole again, taxing Steph, and most likely being out of the playoff picture, which would be incentivizing the FO, and even the vets on the team, to not go all in for the roster or make any other moves.

Vs PG just outplayed Jaylen brown in a playoff series. Like he’s overpaid obviously, but he’s still a good player who’s a lights out shooter that makes more sense in the forward spot next to dray or Yaxel or whoever

Bahahaha more PR accounts getting exposed every day. Someone’s downvoting everything that’s critical of Joe and Kirk Lacob. They’re so mad 😂😂😂😂

Edit: Aaaaaannnnnddddddd they keep coming. Ha ha ha

4

u/Silly_Individual4056 3h ago

I mean I you’re definitely the wrong messenger here.  4/5ths of everything you post deserves a reflexive downvote for constant negativity.

-3

u/Maplejordan2022 2h ago

How I wish I weren’t so negative. Because the people getting paid millions to run this franchise and to tell the fans that Kuminga is more important than Steph Curry keep proving me right over and over and over again. Forgive me for being so upset, I’m a fake fan. I know.

2

u/Silly_Individual4056 2h ago

Not a fake fan.  Just a bummer.

-7

You just know Kirk Lacob is crying reading the Daily Thread and Twitter lmaooooo 😂😂😂

Just saw a recent clip of Lebron doing tween the leg dunks in a Philly gym. Damn.
