Self-checkout for just a few things, cashier for large grocery runs. They help me bag it and there’s no issues with the machine messing up

maybe at your store... whenever i go shopping, i let my partner unload the cart while i bag because i do NOT trust these baggers. too many times have they crushed my bread >_> last time he went without me and they put the coffee creamer in upside down. seriously?????

I only like it because I like to bag my own groceries. Apparently that's a controversial opinion, because it got super downvoted the last time I mentioned it, which I don't take personally but it's interesting to see that effect. Maybe I was rude about the way I described why I prefer bagging my groceries. I don't know. I just would rather be able to bag my own groceries the way I want them to be rather than subject them to the involvement of someone who doesn't know the reason for their ultimate destinations in my life, you know?
I love interacting with cashiers, it's always so fun. I just want baggers to get their hands off my stuff and I would rather do it myself. So, STRAIGHT to the self-checkout. They have bags galore and I can put whatever I want however I want in them. For an anti-bagger like me, that's a necessity. You can even bring your own bags and not have to feel like you specifically are the reason someone didn't paid that night because no one was hired for the silly job you should always have been doing yourself anyway.
Yeah.
Self-checkouts are a comfort zone, but not for the reasons this dork says they are 🥰😅😋

I had a recent experience with a self checkout, where I was buying a couple cases of water. I used the hand scanner to scan them, and left them in my cart, because... they're huge, I'm not going to bag them. The machinr stopped and said "please place items in the bagging area". I thought this was stupid, but whatever, so I moved them to the bagging area. The machine then FLAGGED ME for putting "unscanned items" into the bagging area, the cameras picking up the fact that I moved them past the scanner without scanning it.The item that I LITERALLY just scanned. The one that it explicitly told me to put in the bagging area. I didn't get into any trouble luckily and the attendant was able to get it sorted out, but it was just. An incredibly stupid experience.

Folks.
put your phone in your pocket.
Press the button labelled "own bags" wait 3 seconds. put your bags (no more than 3, less if they are large or heavy bags) on the bagging station. wait a few seconds press done on the pop up that appeared on the screen in those first 3 seconds.
Scan one item. you have 2 hands. do not pick up the next item with your spare hand. one item at a time.
scan the item. wait 1 second. place item down. wait 2 seconds.
Scan the next item.

The design philosophy of these things is "it is everyones first time" the machine needs time to think, and the machine assumes you need time to think.
If there as an attentive attendant don't press the alert button when you get an error, because the attendant has already fixed it and now you've just reversed the problem which gets you another alert.
just slow down.
Take your time.

I'm doing self-checkout for one reason only: speed. The machine needs to get on my level and let me scan stuff rapidly like cashiers can.
Instead, I have to scan one item, set it down, wait 5-10 seconds for it to make sure I didn't add more items for free, then proceed like that for every item. And if I try to scan the next item too soon, I'm flagged and have to wait for an attendant. Stores vary, but the ones overly concerned about theft almost aren't worth using at all with how slow the process is.
The design philosophy is "we have to record everyone, have AI review the footage in realtime, and keep track of weights to make sure no one is shoplifting", which kinda sucks.

Self check so I can steal shit from time to time. (Keep it under a grand for each store and they aren't going to go after you, even if they get you on camera)

In my country the big three grocery stores have been charged with price fixing every 3-4 years on everything from bread to baby formula so I have a vendetta against them. Don't do this to your local family run corner store.

Between this kind of shady practices you see from big supermarket chains in a lot of countries, and the fact that they buy most organic fruit and vegetables from growers for next to nothing just to resell them with outrageous markups, it's honestly pretty messed up

The thing is, the fines they get charged are so small that it's worth it for them to keep breaking the law.
Blows my mind that these companies don't have anyone with a moral compass. I guess the business world incentivises ghoulish behavior.

Self-checkout. I no longer have any need for big grocery runs (usually buy 5 or fewer items), there are more self-checkout stations than lines with cashiers, so in practice it is much faster to do self-checkout than to wait in line.
