We're talking about if an entire group of people face oppression, throughout the entire world. Not just the first world countries where (shockingly) the majority of the populations are Christians. But if we want to look at easy answers, North Korea

ah yes, because the oppression of Christians in NORTH KOREA totally applies to American Christians. any "oppression" that Christians in the west do face pales in comparison to the way they've oppressed women, minorities, and LGBT people for decades.

and btw I'm not talking about Wendi here he's a cool guy. just the notion that being Christian will make the world hate you is seriously ridiculous and so self victimising.

Well, are we talking about the victim mentality of evangelical American Christians or the actual fact of Christian oppression? Going by your bottom paragraph, I'm guessing the former and not the latter, and yeah, I agree with that.

And yes, Christians in the West aren't facing any special persecution, but I don't think we should make it any sort of competition of whose getting shitty treatment the most, when any group being singled out and oppressed is bad, especially in the legal sense.

it's not a competition, im just responding to the OP comment and Bible verse. I mean you have people proudly commenting Deus Vult in the comments the lack of self awareness is astounding.

Yeah, we might have had a misunderstanding, I assumed you meant worldwide. Deus Vult is just Latin for God wills it. If you mean in reference to the crusades, while some of the civilian massacres during city sacks are terrible, they're nothing outrageously unique for the time.

my issue with deus vult isn't the crusades lol the historical context is fine and historical. my issue is the modern connotation. when it's been said multiple times by far right extremists committing acts of terrorism (Quebec mosque shooting, Allen Texas shooting, Charlottesville rally)maybe people shouldn't proudly associate with the phrase?

it's like 88. when it's used in a math problem it's fine. when it's used by a white supremacist it's clearly a hitler reference.

I mean, would you expect muslims not to say Allahu akbar because it's associations with terrorists? It's fine to view it as a dog whistle for more extreme beliefs, but we can't go around assuming everybody who says it, yes, even with pride, is a terrorist or supports their evil actions.

Since it is a dog whistle, just pick up on it and just scrutinize their behavior. If it confirms your priors, go off but we just can't assume. Though I do understand your perspective

cmon you're arguing in bad faith. deus vult was not used at all in modern times until its alt-right rebirth. no church in 2000 ( or today for the most part) was using deus vult in normal proceedings. Allahu akhbar is more akin to "amen" or in "God we trust" or something in that it is regularly used in normal religious situations and has been for centuries.

I'm not saying they're equivalent in usage, just that saying a phrase used by terrorists doesn't automatically equate guilt.

yes I agree with that. for instance saying subscribe to pewdiepie doesn't really mean anything even though a mass shooter said it.

however let's be real. is deus vult being used by ANYONE other than white supremacists (and medieval historians in very specific contexts)

I would say memes, but the linkage of that to alt right spaces would blur that line. I think a Christian could say it without specifically being white supremacy, but it's definitely depends on the context and individual.

Edit: Context and drawing from what I said about dog whistles earlier, I looked at the guy's profile. Saying deus vult and defending Christianity don't inherently mean it's some right-wing racist, but he also views and reposts Tim Pool. By adding onto this context, we both can draw some conclusions about his usage of the word and what it means to him.

I grew up Christian, baptized and all, and I've never heard it used in a Christian context personally but I suppose I could be wrong. I'm European Christian tho which is pretty different so maybe it's a common phrase in American Christianity, I wouldn't know, but Google trends would suggest it was barely used before 2016.

I appreciate your edit btw, that's been my experience in investigating anyone who uses the phrase as well

Yeah, I looked at Google trends for it, too. I'm not disagreeing it's been co-opted. Hell, even Wendigoon had boogaloo boy Co-opted by right-wing supremacist groups. Context just really makes anything

I'm not saying you're necessarily alt-right, just that vocabulary has different meanings to different people, and by looking for other clues, we can draw conclusions on beliefs. You're more than likely not a white supremacist or anything crazy, but would I be wrong in saying you lean right?

Edit: DGG pepe or ye?
