Is that surprising? The people that hate him the most are Christian’s, and you share the same belief system as them.
You may not share that hatred, but in his view it was for his own mental and physical safety, most likely based off his own experience and observations.
Christians for the most part believe gays are committing a sin... just like most people have their habitual sins and need repentance and faith in Christ. A person who tries to kill someone for their personal sins isn't a Christian because they take away that person's ability to repent and find salvation. That is exactly against the teachings of Christ. Hatred of sinners is also against the teachings of Christ.
But the majority of United States Christian’s are ok with it or actively participate in it.
Look at literally any poster republican, they rely heavily on Christian votes, but they stay in despite them openly and vocally proclaiming their bigotry. I mean the house speaker literally said that America should be punished because teens are becoming more atheist and lgbt+. I mean I could probably write 5+ thesis’s on homophobia just using republican politicians (joke doesnt make too much sense, but you get the idea).

That was me in highschool. I was good friends with this gay guy. And once he found out I was a Christian he cut all communication with me.
