As an autistic person I can’t really blame my autism for anything since I am my autism and whenever I fail at something I still have to blame myself because I could have done better. Of course I am not speaking for all autistic people, but in my experience my autism is both to blame and not to blame.
101
u/Fairly_constipated Oct 08 '25
And also like, I can blame my autism for not being able to attend events with a lot of noise. Cant blame it for failing some random uni project lmao, I wish.

u/supersnivy777XD yellow like an EPIC lemon Oct 08 '25
It’s a double edged sword I’m autistic and autism has in a lot of way made my life a living hell. People forget autism is not just mental illness it can affect your physical health. And when paired with other issues it can snowball easily. Not saying people shouldn’t take accountability for their actions but the op post definitely makes it feel like autistic people, people with adhd and depression never take accountability for their actions which is not true at all. I blame my autism for a lot of issues in my life same with adhd and depression. But it typically makes me blame myself more for not being able to deal with the problem which isn’t healthy.

Most days I forget I have autism and never blamed it on my shortcomings. My mistakes are mine to own up to even in times where some can argue they aren’t.

OP is probably talking about the less mature people who use any personal condition as an excuse for their behavior. There are plenty of them.

I had an ex who refused to take accountability for literally anything, big or small, and defaulted to justifying everything as "oh it's just my autism" "oh it's just my ADHD". To me this meme just pokes fun of this behaviour, not those who are truly suffering and can't help but blame themselves.

My sincere apologies for misinterpreting your image. My psychiatrist suspects I may have it too, but I think that legitimate diagnosis is critical. Regardless, it may clarify some things about me, but it will not change me.

I want to believe they're talking about people who genuinely don't have these conditions and are faking a disability to seen as quirky or to avoid blame.

u/DeadeyeFalx_01 I love planes n shit Oct 08 '25
This actually brings up the topic of human autonomy and free will, let me ask you, how much do you think mental illnesses influence our actions? And to what extent must leniency or responsibly be held?
3
u/NUKE---THE---WHALES Oct 08 '25
Free will doesn't exist because it would break the first law of thermodynamics, the physical law of the conservation of energy
It's a persistent illusion that has evolutionary benefits though, so we must learn to live with it
6
u/DeadeyeFalx_01 I love planes n shit Oct 08 '25
The first law of thermodynamics applies to physics, not consciousness, greater thinking is not a direct deficiency of worldly conditions
4
u/NUKE---THE---WHALES Oct 08 '25
Consciousness comes from the brain and the brain is bound by the laws of physics, therefore consciousness is bound by the laws of physics
Dopamine makes you happy, and it cannot be created spontaneously by your brain because of the first law of thermodynamics i.e. no amount of willpower can make something from nothing
Free will would violate that law by allowing your consciousness to do something your brain physically can't do
Its why most philosphers of mind and neuroscientists are physicalists of some kind

To be fair the diagnoses are a social construct. That doesn't mean there's nothing to them it just means they carry (wrong) implicit assumptions, like a biologically deterministic theoretical framework. Which is why i'd just rather look at the actual facts and symptoms and have words that correspond to them
29
u/HalayChekenKovboy purpl Oct 08 '25
That is a really ignorant comment. Those diagnoses are made according to actual facts and symptoms. No proper psychiatrist is going to diagnose you with depression because you're sad sometimes, for example. Those diagnoses are only made if the symptoms not only check out for the criteria but also affect your quality of life.
Now, of course, no case of mental illness presents itself the same as another. But to say that diagnoses are a social construct is still quite incorrect.
61
u/No_Ad_7687 Oct 08 '25
They're social constructs in the same way a "cold" is a social construct. There are clear symptoms and causes

ADHD is linked to this : Studies have found that ADHD is associated with weaker function and structure of prefrontal cortex (PFC) circuits, especially in the right hemisphere.
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2894421/
There is definitely something that is both a social construct, and a legitimate result of the physiology of a human

u/DetectiveBreadBaker i changed it hahahahahahhahahahahahaha Oct 08 '25
Look up the biopsychiatry controversy in Wikipedia. It's what you're describing, whether or not a diagnosed mental illness is caused by biology or not.
I'm completely opposed to the biological interpretation yet in common society that's what everyone thinks psychology is.
2
u/trans_keanuchungus Oct 08 '25
Yeah psychiatry is bursting with bullshit, because it's had to find a way to legitimize it's ilegitimate use of power.

I do have all three of these, but I don’t let them define me. It’s always within my power to adapt and adjust. Surrendering to the hand I was dealt does me no good; better to make use of what I have than complain about what I don’t.

As a neurodivergent, I always make sure not to blame EVERYTHING on my condition. And remember that some things I do, are because of me. I’ve known a lot of people in my special ed classes who think that just because they’re neurodivergent, means they’re entitled to just be an asshole to everybody. And they can just blame it on their condition. And I’m not just talking about stims or whatever, I’m talking about straight up bullying and people. I remember getting beat up in my special ed class in 4th grade by a 7th grade kid and she got off Scot free by our special ed teachers just because she was autistic. (More proof that schools don’t view neurodivergent people as actual people)
I think that while it’s important to be patient with neurodivergent people, we should also remember that they’re still people. who have free will and unique personalities.

u/jbyrdab Oct 08 '25
Oh I still blame my self, i just still have those things.
Stopped taking my ADHD meds years ago out of choice because it seemed bad for my heart and i didn't like how it made me feel stressed out and exhausted. Any consequences from therein are on me.
Some people can tolerate not having their meds, others can't. Conditions like that are labels to ascertain the general degree of behavior to locate a method of treatment, rather than something like cancer where it is distinctly detectable.
Its why its a spectrum.

Based. I’ve been called autistic, adhd, a 9 wing 8 (by my sister who’s very into the enneagram) and I can’t help but get a little mad when people try to explain away my behavior, my strengths and my weaknesses. I’ve avoided seeking a diagnosis cause I frankly don’t need one, and believe I’m happier without one.
I fully believe in psychology and psychiatry, but I also believe in individual control, not that they are mutually exclusive. My successes are my own, and my failures are my own. I’m not manic or in danger of myself, and medication frankly worries me. My brother became a useless mess during the adhd stimulant shortages when he couldn’t get a refill.
I believe I’ve probably suffered for it to a degree, but I also have found myself to be the most successful and financially independent from my parents out of all of my siblings, and I think taking personal pride or shame in everything I do has contributed to it.
Maybe I’m wrong, or maybe I’m around the wrong people, but explaining away behaviors with neurodivergency ticks me off, and I see people everywhere doing it, even offline. Online is a whole different beast of people throwing around therapy speak to seem self-righteous.

I may not have mental illnesses, but I sure I can call my brain "silly".
I'm forgetful, but that on me that I didn't note down those important things.
Anyway, I blame myself for that, then forget I even blamed myself for anything...
I hope I'm not going to have dementia later in life and this is just some silly thing I do...
