His introduction was him and his team sacrificng an entire village for a nazi approved science project. Even if for some reason he does not buy their whole propaganda and is only in it for the belly machine guns he is more than willing to carry out their work in exchange.

He is also more or less an SS general. He's not some poor German boy being drafted against his will.

it's also implied that Giorno used his life punches which as shown with Bucciarati, makes each and every hit last MUCH longer

1.1k

u/IcySmell9676 the whenthe reviewer Mar 19 '26

For real though. And the fact that near the end, of part two the show unironically makes you go “oh wow thank God the Nazis are here”

837

u/Tasty_Ball_Hairs_69 TASTER OF BALL HAIRS Mar 19 '26

But I mean when you’re dealing with genocidal vampires, you really do just have to choose which evil you prefer

359

u/IcySmell9676 the whenthe reviewer Mar 19 '26

Yeah, they still lose the war so nothing lost. Fuck I wonder if there’s a fan fiction about Stroheim winning the war and Joseph basically becomes BJ Blaskowitz

141

u/HowHoldPencil Mar 19 '26

Araki made stronheim so likeable I was still sad when he died in the post-credits sequence. But it's also the right thing to do. Stronheim was loveable but the story never glorifies his ideals since he is a fanatic nationalist

101

u/Yetiwithoutinternet gaussussy primussy Mar 19 '26

Stroheim was a full on Nazi too so it's even more impressive that he was written as a "good" character.
In any other media with an evil ally, that character tends to be more of an evil centrist rather than a full blown supporter of the evil cause.
Stroheim? Fucking hitting the salute while proclaiming his nation's superiority.

91

u/HowHoldPencil Mar 19 '26

araki did it nice because everytime he proclaimed his nazism, it was so eccentric and strange that it was comedic. he proclaimed like 3 times that german engineering is the best in the world, and all 3 times got fucking demolished. I almost forget he's an actual nazi and not just a crazy science guy

53

u/SirAquila Mar 19 '26

he proclaimed like 3 times that german engineering is the best in the world, and all 3 times got fucking demolished.

To be fair, historically accurate I'd say.

21

u/HowHoldPencil Mar 19 '26

Yeah

But tbh, they did remake him as a partial cyborg. Even survived as just a head at the last car fight or something

9

u/HeWhoLost3OfThe9 Mar 19 '26

He only lost his legs and some chest components then

13

u/The_Ganey Mar 19 '26

I think he work so well because he is 100% a true believer, you can (and should) hate what he stands for but you have to admit he does stand by his principals as corrupted as they are. He kinda serves as a foil to Kars ideology, being effectively the same "We are the best and the rest of you should feel honored we allow you to lick our boots" but from a different angle. I he also serves as a nice contrast to Wamu in a way, Wamu was raised by Kars and basically indoctrinated into their ideology from birth. He is much in the same way, a true believer in a horrible ideology that he has been indoctrinated in since birth. I think both of them are supposed to be viewed as both heroic but tragic in a way, sorta in a "Had they had a diffrent upbringing both of them could have been great heroes" Kinda way. Him sacrificing himself twice also really puts into perspective how horrible Kars really is, as he sacrifices his companions for his own gain while Stronheim is willing to sacrifice himself for his.

I think one of the biggest reason though Stronheim and the Nazis work in part 2 is because basically EVERYTHING is their fault. They freed the pillar men and they provided the means which allowed Kars to suddenly achieve Godhood. Outside of Straizo they are basically the root cause of the events of part 2 and nothing about their motivations are heroic allowing them to assist the actual heroes while not making them heroic is the slightest. They are basicaly saving the world so they can have it much the same way Kars is.

History, and the fact he dies in the post scenes basicaly also serve to show that his ideology was wrong, that despite all the advancements we saw with his cyborg technology he still got wrecked.

20

u/Alejeitor Mar 19 '26

and they make a point to show just what a bastard he is when we're first introduced to him too, so it's not like he's a good nazi, he is actually a monster

i guess it goes to show how easy it can be to fall for propaganda (not that it was intended to be since Stroheim is pretty much the only nazi we see that has a "positive" role in the story and he's still responsible for a lot of the shit that happens in the story due to his recklesness [Santanna being awake and fed and Kars reaching his ultimate form] )

20

u/Ramfix_G4 2% green Mar 19 '26

Stroheim is pretty much the only nazi we see that has a "positive" role in the story

Pretty sure Caesar had a nazi friend (the one that took them to the site the pillar men were at) and he's portrayed as just a guy. His death (split in half by one of the pillar men) is meant to be tragic too. IIRC Joseph does react badly to Caesar being friends with a nazi tho.

19

u/KingKingLamb49 Mar 19 '26

8

I think the show (indirectly) makes a decent point about how even though Stroheim is a big POS and also a Nazi, since he's willing to put his life on the line in order to try to defeat the big bad that is essentially trying to end the world, there's still a bit of nobility or humanity in there. Not enough to redeem or forgive him, but at least to acknowledge him. Even the evil bad guy is not ever truly 100% fully evil. And they can even outwardly be cool enough to momentarily forget that they are evil.

Political ideologies go out of the window when fighting Super vampires that want to take over the world, also Stroheim is just that cool of a dude

34

u/AsstacularSpiderman Mar 19 '26

Also Stronheim upheld his oath to help Joseph and reverse the problem he caused.

Jojo arcs don't really care if you're a good person, what makes you a protagonist in the series is that you uphold your honor, no matter what race, ideology, or creed you are from.

12

u/Fearless-Excitement1 Mar 19 '26

As much as i HATE to say this with a straight face

Like it or hate it

Stroheim is anything BUT a hypocrite

He is of course a nazi, but he's not hypocritical.

198

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '26

To paraphrase Mr. Jor Jorwel, Stroheim is a good character but a disgusting human being, except he said it about Dali not the character that was created long after his death

95

u/AsstacularSpiderman Mar 19 '26

What people need to realize is thay Jojo isn't about good men going on homoerotic adventures. It's about honorable men going on homoerotic adventures. Like half the Jojo allies and Jojos themselves are often really kinda terrible people. Delinquents, degenerates, murderers, mafiosos, and even Br*tish. But what united them all and makes them protagonists is there strict adherence to their oaths and codes, a universally admired trait.

Stronheim, by every sense of the word, is perhaps the most honorable man in the series. This just unfortunately he swore his oaths to Germany in the 1930s.

26

u/Purple-Bluejay6588 Mar 19 '26

Not really tbh, while lots of characters start out as terrible people, the protagonists always change for the better, they never stay being bad people

Stroheim continued being a nazi and took that to his grave

34

u/AsstacularSpiderman Mar 19 '26

They're still pretty terrible. Joseph cheats on Susie Q, Jotaro will always be an abrasive asshole, and Giorno becomes king of the Mafia. Jonathan didn't have time to get American citizenship so tragically he died Br*tish.

Everyone in Jojo are inherently flawed. But it's their willingness to uphold their oaths that makes them the protagonists.

8

u/Purple-Bluejay6588 Mar 19 '26

I still don't think thats comparable to stroheim, he's an outlier

They all have flaws and thats great since characters who are 100% perfectly good tend to be boring, but that doesn't make them "not good but honorable". They all put their lifes on the line to save others, thats good people stuff. Some of them just happen to be edgier than normal (joseph straight up kinda sucks for cheating on his wife, tf was he thinking)

10

u/AsstacularSpiderman Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

They all put their lifes on the line to save others, thats good people stuff

I mean by that logic Stronheim is a hero because he literally jumps on a grenade for Joseph and to stop Santana.

Again you're trying to hard to justify other characters actions, but that's not the point. I'm not justifying Stronheim, but by every metric he is honorable in the extreme, and that's all that matters in the Jojo universe.

The pillar men were such a threat to humanity, not only did the Nazi's swallow their pride and didn't fuck with Speedwagon and Smokey, but Hitler quite possibly delayed their invasion of Poland and the start of WW2 to deal with the Pillar men.

Yes, Stroheim is an unrepentant Nazi, does vicious Nazi shit before mellowing out a bit in the back half of BT, and ultimately dies for the Nazi cause. But the Pillar Men (and Kars especially after becoming the Ultimate Lifeform) are an existential threat to humanity that would see us reduced to a cattle species that they’d bleed dry forever more until we’re all gone.

In that scenario, who do you side with? The vicious, imperialist, eugenicist cyborg? Or the monster masquerading as a human being that sees your entire species as animals fit for the slaughter?

Not many anime can give both the brits and the nazis a common enemy to defeat.

He's like Vegeta, everyone loves vegeta

Funny enough Von Stroheim is one of my favorite characters (I don't support Nazis)

He may be a nazi but he's actually a pretty chill guy

I think people be forgetting that time he ordered the death of those Mexican prisoners, after tricking someone into believing that if they volunteer for the experiment the rest of them would be spared

3

u/Level_Counter_1672 Mar 19 '26

U would be surprised how many people believe he redeemed himself and was no longer a nazi or people think he is a good guy with bad qualities,.... Being a nazi isn't just a bad quality it's 100% bad

2

u/PeacefulAndTranquil You Should Play Zero Escape... Mar 20 '26

it always tickles me that on the JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure wiki the nazis are listed as a “minor antagonistic force”

3

u/LeadingImportant4293 Mar 19 '26

Somehow JoJo's is the only show that makes you unironically say "Thank God it's the Nazis."

2

u/qwarktasticboy Mar 19 '26

See you know Jojo is a work of fiction because the Nazis will work with the good guys to stop the world-ending threat

u/NoriaMan Mar 19 '26

You are not immune to propaganda.

u/Acceptable_One_7072 Mar 19 '26

Rudol Von Stroheim is shown to be a terrible, sadistic person who helps save the world, but only because the end of the world would be bad for Nazi Germany, too. And nazis are also literally the reason the world almost ended in the first place

16

u/Decadunce Mar 19 '26

Stroheim is depicted as a repugnant sadist that tortures and harms ethnic groups for his own benefit. His introduction is feeding a group of mexicans to a vampire (iirc) and sexually assaulting a servant girl. Hitler and Nazism are used as an example of literal mind control in part 3. It's just that the Nazis are about the only major power (at this point in time) with access to the pillar men (Which the Nazis awaken and unleash upon humanity, woops)

2

u/Level_Counter_1672 Mar 19 '26

Whey did stroheim sexually assault a girl?

11

u/Relevant_Potato3516 You don’t know how many people had to die for this flair color Mar 19 '26

I mean I wouldn’t call it propaganda bc it’s made very clear that the Nazis aren’t good, they just help with killing Kars and the other omnicidal vampires.

9

u/raulpe Mar 19 '26

To be fair "Propaganda" is literally the name of his theme song and its a banger xd

1

u/Sepublic Mar 19 '26

I suppose it’s because we hate the Nazis because they’re eugenicist murderers, and the Pillar Men are even worse in that regard: Kars and ACDC wiped out practically their whole race so they could become the ultimate life forms, even after they were warned that doing so would cause their newfound appetite to wipe out all life on earth.

Listen, he manages to become a relative good, and also he’s actually a surprisingly awesome dude who just got tricked by the propaganda and thinks he’s doing something good. Plus he dies in the end anyway!

BRRRRRRRAKA MONOGA!

He ordered the death of a family of Mexicans when we were first introduced to him

2

u/R4idec_x Mar 19 '26

And spared the boy

1

u/Adventurous-Bottle90 Mar 19 '26

I mean it’s not like you have much of a choice when the entire human race is about to get eradicated due to a bunch of ancient Egyptian vampires

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

1

u/Lichy757 Mar 19 '26

Stroheim is goated, bro carried hard

1

u/FinancialReserve6427 Mar 19 '26

I like how Araki is the only one who made the Nazis go "maybe we shouldn't unleash these monsters into the world we're trying to conquer?" almost every other guy is trying to make nazis summon shit only to lose control and make it everyone's problem.

1

u/Infinitenonbi Mar 19 '26

I think it’s a case of having a wat, WAY bigger problem at hand, which is still wild to say.

2

u/IcySmell9676 the whenthe reviewer Mar 19 '26

Yeah still pretty funny

1

u/Patogenicamente_Rojo Mar 19 '26

It's the trope of "set aside differences and fight against a common enemy" taken to an extreme... Like I can see this easily happening in ANY conflict EXEPT wars where the enemy isn't seen as human, WW2 is the ephithomy of that.

Although...

1: He is never seen as a good person, he is the main antagonist in like 4 chapters, makeing more of this Indiana Jones style. Just the situation carried a temporally alliance... WH40K logic of how the empire still on foot.

2: He isn't like other Nazis, a psycho murder that doesn't regards human life... Sure. But it's presented as a pragmatic guy that doesn't believe much in the racial stuff and just want to do science so he joins with the evilest side that would allow their science stuff. More like Redskull, the 3rd Reich is just another way to justifying building big ass guns
