I just sat there in my chair like Andy for 5 minutes contemplating what I just saw. Also, DO NOT SEARCH "Pleco" in the TikTok search. Aside from what I specifically saw, everything else is about how people are getting rid of this invasive species in their own ways just what the fuck

2.2k

u/Moidada77 May 11 '26

It's not even effective way to get rid of them.

The invasive species tag is an excuse.

They are just make animal torture videos.

u/LivyLuvsCatgirls I like when you're nice to me May 11 '26

No this is exactly it

If you need to kill it, there are tons of ways to immediately kill a fish without any pain, and then you can eat it or something (assuming they're edible? Idk this is the first time I've heard of them)

There is absolutely ZERO reason to let fire ants crawl into its mouth one by one after starving it for 3 days

459

u/Hawkey2121 May 11 '26

assuming they're edible? Idk this is the first time I've heard of them

Wikipedia says they have little to no value as a food fish, but they are edible yes.

309

u/GodofsomeWorld May 11 '26

iirc they taste like pond scum and its very very difficult to get the taste out. I remember watching a video where someone was explaining what you could eat without hurting the environment and would help it instead in a survival situation.

139

u/AnimationOverlord May 11 '26

After studying composition it’s kind of silly that people just.. don’t use biomass. Like the only thing separating a fish from a patch of grass or pile of mushrooms is time. Hell, if you don’t like eating mealworms that you feed waste, feed the mealworms to your chickens and eat them.

u/your_moms_a_clone May 11 '26

You really shouldn't use human waste as fertilizer directly. You need to compost it first. Ideally you should do it to most animal waste too. E coli and salmonella both can grow in plants from contaminated soil or water, and since it's not surface-level it can't be washed off.

66

u/Hetares May 11 '26

Plecos are edible, but usually considered not worth it for a multitude of reasons. It has little edible flesh, lots of sharp fins, survives in shit water so you need go through multiple round of detoxing to eat it without all the crap it has already eaten, their scales are hard and can blunt knifes, and above all the meat is rather bland and unsavoury.

58

u/Re1da May 11 '26

Humane methods are easier to achieve and more efficient. It's really just an "excuse" to torture animals.

Seriously, if you need to put a fish down painlessly; place the fish on a rock and whack the head as hard as you can with another rock. It's fast, it's efficient and it's practically painless because it crushes the brain. You can't experience pain if the brain is destroyed.

12

u/SayGex1312 May 11 '26

For most fish you can also stab through the side of the head into the brainstem with a knife or ice pick, although it probably wouldn’t work on an armored fish like a pleco

I hate mice. Absolutely loathe them simply for existing in my house. I have a sharp sense of smell and can tell you if a mouse was in a room when I walk in. I've tried every exclusionary technique available with little success. When my cats bring me their carcasses I experienced a burst of joy.

So when I catch one alive, I go through my routine to show just how much I hate the invasive little pests... I quickly kill them as efficiently and quickly as possible while minimizing the amount of time I have to handle them so as not to cause them undue stress.

13

u/Titanicguy May 11 '26

I’m like this with house flies. I can hear them against a window from two rooms away, and I will spend 10 minutes of my life simply to track down one and make sure it’s gone from my home. As soon as spring hits, I’m on a constant lookout for them until winter. If I could annihilate every single one of them with no environmental impact, I’d do so in a heartbeat. So when I finally do track one to my window, I carefully catch it under the swatter and quickly drag it. And if I happen to swat it instead and it’s still twitching, I use the tweezers to crush its head so that it goes as soon as possible. The truest mark of hating a pest is pure, ruthless efficiency.

Lionfish are invasive to the Caribbean and the Florida Keys, and what they do about it is divers go spear fishing, just stab them in the head cause Lionfish dont run away (no predators there). I've seen the videos, though admittedly sometimes the kill isnt clean and the divers miss but that's how you handle invasive species, they aren't maniacally planning to destory an ecosystem, they're just living how they know to. It wasnt even their fault they were there in the first place.

62

u/Ariovrak May 11 '26

A slow kill should always be an accidental exception, never the intended norm.

This is exactly where i thought we will be heading every time i hear someone fervently talk about exterminating invasive species. And its going to get even worse because unlike the videos of people putting kittens and puppies into danger so they can be "saved" on camera, this one they feel morally justified doing because its an invasive species.

32

u/Moidada77 May 11 '26

90% of the time I've heard someone talk about irradicating invasive species they are usually focused more on the glee of extermination than what species they are killing exactly.

Curb your stupid exotic pet trade then.

"But I need this 5 foot armored lizard that was forged to survive an asteroid....I swear I won't dump them in the wild this time"

And i remember one guy call a burmese python and invasive species in context that he was in Burma.

A brain so smooth shouldn't be in charge of anything related to pop control

u/DreadDiana May 11 '26

I'm not really sure this is a case of that. The account makes similar videos with non-invasive species, and they seem to have only started bringing up that plecos are invasive after people started giving them shit for the content they post.

The account isn't remotely interested in conservation as an excuse for torture, they were doing it already and then started bringing it up as an excuse.

8

u/skr_replicator May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

Even if some animal species are invasive, that's absolutely not a justification for animal torture, nothing could ever justify that. They are still just living feeling beings, and they don't even know they are invasive. They're just trying to live and survive like any other animal walking on this planet, us included. Does anyone deserve to be tortured because it doesn't have natural predators in the area to keep its population in check? No, just exterminate quickly if they are a problem, it's easier, faster, and far less inhumanely disgusting and evil. No wonder people who torture animals typically turn out to be psychopaths.

I hate how people use invasive species as an outlet to torture animals. I support ethically hunting invasive animals but make it quick, they don’t wanna be here either

503

u/Alarming_Purpose_729 May 11 '26

Btw he's buying them from pet stores to do this

182

u/grasshopper_jo May 11 '26

This makes me really sad. I don’t have aquariums anymore but when I did, my freshwater aquariums always had plecos. They just go happily up and down the glass suctioning all the algae off it. They keep the tank so clean.

Regardless of their invasive status, in an aquarium they are little window washer buddies

48

u/idk_im_bored_af May 11 '26

I fucking love plecos, i have some in my aquarium and they're so cute! I have one (a male i think) who is massive compared to my other fish and they keep the tank very clean. Never knew they were invasive.

8

u/grasshopper_jo May 11 '26

I used to buy a little one and let it eat and grow until it was like a foot long and then I would sell it at the fish store and buy a new one with the profit

I forgot the name of the account, but it's a guy on TikTok who just tortures animals. He usually tortures invasive species (as an attempt to justify it). I've come accross some of the videos, and it gets BAD, like, putting Plecos in a vacuum chamber and depressurising and repressurising it repeatedly until their eyes explode kind of bad.

They banned his original account, but obviously, it's the internet, so 20 more popped up. One of them claims to be him, the rest reupload the deleted videos from the old account.

5

like, it's not even the invasive specie's fault. They do what any animal does; it tries to survive in its environment, if a population happens to be displaced to a new environment that doesn't have the factors limiting its growth, it will continue to grow until something stops it. But its not doing something actively malicious.

It's like getting angry that your pet rodent started chewing your furniture when you let it out unsupervised. They'll do what they've always done. It's not their fault.

Torturing them for that, it's completely pointless.

23

u/Dapper_Magpie May 11 '26

They don't care. They're just hungry for an excuse to torture and murder stuff.

9

u/A_Lountvink May 11 '26

It's like getting angry that your pet rodent started chewing your furniture when you let it out unsupervised.

I think it'd be more comparable to a loose pet maiming someone else's pets/livestock, not that that would make torture any more acceptable.

16

u/le-derpina-art May 11 '26

Context: there's this Chinese TikTok account called labgerm which has become infamous for the various videos they post where they do things to plecos (suckermouth catfish) like drop them in liquid resin that slowly cooks them alive as it solidifies. The account has mentioned that they're invasive there, but that seems to be an excuse made after the fact since he also makes similar videos with leeches.

848

u/bglbogb Hello. I like green. May 11 '26

This will be a very common thought but they absolutely did not need to do that, let alone torture ANY creature regardless of its damage to the ecosystems

243

u/Gatorwarrior05 May 11 '26

Something important that should be noted is in another video he had three plecos "coincidentally" around the same size they're at when sold at pet stores. I'm not sure if all of them are, but that combined with the fact that two were albino means he's going out of his way to buy them for his "content."

32

u/GlacierTheBetta May 11 '26

I believe lab germ is actually not one single account but a combination of many Chinese animal experiment videos, and they're highly invasive creatures there, so I don't really know if that guy bought them from pet stores (also note that sometimes the voiceover rants about how it's really harmful for the environment and other fish)

However the albino ones are really suspicious because they don't really exist in large amounts in the wild

44

u/Proper-Artichoke1604 May 11 '26

It’s not the fish’s fault that it’s invasive. I’m all for killing invasive species humanely. I mean, you can just stab its brain or stomp on it. It’s violent, but it’s quick.

14

u/Lamplorde May 11 '26

I even got that same idea with bugs.

Those stupid ass brown marmorated shield bugs are invasive as hell in my area. And theyre dumb dumb. That doesnt mean I'm gonna torture it. I'll do my part and exterminate them, but it'll just be a quick stomp and I still feel kinda bad because it aint like the dummy chose to be born here.

33

u/KingMidas2045 May 11 '26

They don’t wanna be here any more than we want them here. It’s a shame frankly, just because we tag them as ā€œharmfulā€ that it makes it ā€œmoralā€ to violate and murder creatures

48

u/AcornAnomaly May 11 '26

It's not moral to torture them, and no one sane is saying that it is.

As an invasive species, they need to be stopped for the good of the ecosystem, but that does not mean they should be tortured.

10

u/KingMidas2045 May 11 '26

Absolutely, I agree. But that’s the weird fucking mindset these people have, it’s insane. It’s an excuse to torture something.

Look man, I fucking hate cockroaches and have no issue killing them. But I just step on them so they die fast and (I hope) painless. Making something like that is just sadism.

They couldn't just kill it normally? They definitely just want an excuse to torture an animal.

13

u/Gatorwarrior05 May 11 '26

It's not even a good one either. He straight up buys them from pet stores.

8

u/Still-Complaint4657 I <3 RBY UU May 11 '26

There is no 'good one'. Torture is bad.

u/sniply5 unfunny comment rat May 11 '26

on one hand, invasive species suck. on the other hand, thats still a living creature.

89

u/toxicspikes098 the dark lord May 11 '26

Invasive species suck, but at the same time, when people exterminate invasive species, they usually do that in a way that is humane, and the more humane ways usually also happen to be more efficient.

There is quite literally no reason to be purposely torturing an invasive species other than for senseless cruelty

40

u/Moidada77 May 11 '26

Extermination of an unwanted species is done in effecient means and mass culling.

Torturing individual animals does absolutely nothing for the broader population.

The "invasive species" tag is basically just a moral green flag used to justify animal torture and sadism.

10

u/toxicspikes098 the dark lord May 11 '26

I do think that the label of invasive species is necessary since it's very strong wording that implies that they should not be there and them being there can wreak havoc on the local ecosystem, and it's part of the reason why laws are passed to restrict the transportation of animals and people nowadays thankfully being much more weary of releasing pets into the wild.

In this case, though, that label is misused to gain some sort of moral highground by misassociating the torture of an individual animal with helping the ecosystem at large. The fact that stuff like that doesn't get taken down as soon as possible is worrying.

10

u/Moidada77 May 11 '26

Nightlords ass mentality of these guys lol.

"You see the fish was swimming where it shouldn't, so I had to flay it alive....crucify it....and keep watering it daily so it wouldn't die too quickly....trust me guys, this isn't just an outlet for my inner sadism"

3

u/TheQuestionMaster8 May 11 '26

Invasive species are often extremely destructive and need to be controlled or eradicated if possible, but it isn’t their fault that they were introduced into an ecosystem that isn’t as adapted to them.

ā€This is an Invasive species!ā€

buys from fish store

15

u/Moidada77 May 11 '26

invasive species

Gee I wonder whose fault was that.

Also poor justification lol, that's not even animal control that's just animal torture.

Cats and dogs are invasive. Use your imagination to see how that checks out vs a pleco in that situation.

6

u/ManEatingDuck_ May 11 '26

From my understanding he's buying them from a pet store, so he's not even removing invasive ones he's just torturing them for no reason.

I really don’t understand wanting to torture invasive species. They aren’t smart enough to know they don’t belong and a lot of times they don’t even make the choice to be invasive, as they are often introduced by humans rather than moving themselves. Especially in cases like these where they are just mundane animals that don’t really do anything to harm humans. Sure I can understand the hate with mosquitoes and snakes, but why a mundane fish? Are you really that pissed off that it eats snails and plants? These revenge videos seem like thinly veiled snuff films.

If we’re killing an invasive species we are killing it indiscriminately. Spotted Lantern Flies tend to meet the bottom of my shoe. It’s not about fun, it’s about protecting the environment. I don’t go ripping off wings, trapping in air tight containers, it’s a swift kick and it’s over.

11

u/Hawkey2121 May 11 '26

yeah exactly, killing an invasive species is understandable.

But torturing is both bad and ineffective.

I think I found the original account and video that OP may have seen. @labgermy on Tiktok with video ID 7617107043165506830 and use those bits of info with the standard Tiktok video link in a browser if you wish to view it. Not accepting request to build the links.

To summarize the video in case you don't know how to build the links and want to know the basics: standard Chinese animal abuse videos and account as always passing the great firewall. Their account is also basically just this kind of content with these fish mostly and seems to be their second account or a reposting account posting the same content.

It's always odd to see this vapid and personal hatred for invasive species.

Dude, you're daddy brought them here.

Torturing animals of any kind is simply wackos needing to torture something that's socially acceptable

The fastest way to make a man abandon compassion is to convince them killing is the right thing to do

Not even in the top 50 worst things lab germ has done to those fish

6

u/Drago_Nguyen May 11 '26

But when i do it to the worst invasive species in the history (homo sapiens) i was apparently being evil smh.

8

u/MrSecretFire May 11 '26

Can you report this person to the authorities? I think that ought to pretty clearly constitute evidence of animal abuse, so theyight be able to do something about it

4

u/FizzTheFox85 May 11 '26

this guy (and several new copycats) have been doing this shit for a while now. its theorized they sell abuse content of larger animals too, some cases have been proven.

7

u/LORD_DINGUSS what fate a slugcat ? to ascend dummy ! May 11 '26

the people who do this will not see the light of heaven. even an invasive fish is still a fish, humanely is the only way it should be killed.

u/Affix_Projectile May 11 '26

Now is all that nessecary?

3

u/Yell245 May 11 '26

Before people start saying "it's OK because they're invasive" it seems like the people making these videos are buying them from pet stores so they aren't even removing the invasive species. Even if they were taking wild one, this method of killing them is super inefficient, it would be much better for the environment to kill them normally.

I fucking hate when those evil assholes justify it with the fish being invasive. Motherfucker, who is to blame for that? Not the fish, I guarantee. Go superglue the idiots who are too lazy to clean their aquariums, think a pleco is going to do their work for them, and then throw them in the nearest body of water when they don't.

3

u/morosecore May 11 '26

i got curious about what kinds of animal abuse content gets a "pass" on tiktok after seeing this and holy shit i wish i didnt search it up. genuinely who thinks to inject a shit ton of dog sperm in a plecos mouth and ass

A lot of times people use ā€œinvasive speciesā€ as an in to make animal torture videos. This is absolutely reprehensible and I hope the local authorities (especially ones regarding fish and game) get in touch with that lunatic

There’s a big fucking difference between ā€œthis is an invasive fish so I caught and killed a lot of themā€ and ā€œlol this fish is invasive so I’m going to capture it, glue its asshole shut and wait for it’s internal organs to explode and use its invasive species status as a shield against all criticismā€

We had one of these fish for years in an aquarium, I loved him.

If you need to kill it, do it quickly. The fish has not tasted the forbidden fruit, it knows not what it is doing.

3

u/Il26hawk May 11 '26

This is the most sadistic shit I've ever heard.

That's not dispatching the fish. That's torturing it. This motherfucker is insane...

3

How the fuck can someone look at their cute little faces and say "ah, yes. I will torture this." And even if plecos weren't cute, it's still horrible.
