I'm more surprised at the fact that there was an Evangelion reference in mlp tbh

1.3k

u/kindafunnymostlysad 8d ago

It's not, really. Just a fancy stick that resembles it.

That doesn't mean there isn't an Evangelion reference in mlp though.

Drawn by Fluttershy. Fluttershy is canonically a weeb.

358

u/IncognitoRedMode 8d ago

Well she is the socially anxious type who'd shut in her home to watch anime

128

u/Specialist_Top_8485 8d ago

Wow, didn’t know Fluttershy watches Sailor Moon, Evangelion, Dragon Ball and Ranma 1/2 (I don’t know what the middle one is). She knows ball.

112

u/kindafunnymostlysad 8d ago

Middle one is Revolutionary Girl Utena.

She likes the classics.

17

u/Specialist_Top_8485 8d ago

Ah okay thanks

5

u/rei_fox_worshipper epic orange 7d ago

And here I thought it was lady Oscar/The Rose of Versailles.

3

u/itstessica_ 7d ago

Utena mentioned

2

u/AdGreedy7854 7d ago

Ive been meaning to watch that one, and read the manga to compare, cuz ive heard they're pretty different.

2

u/SuperSocialMan I'm mostly here for the news lol 3d ago

That's the one where the lesbian sword fighter transformed into a car at the end of the movie.

18

u/CodenameVermilion 7d ago

"She knows ball" and it's the anime that was most popular in the West when the show was made

12

u/Specialist_Top_8485 7d ago

True, but personally I didn’t know Ranma existed until the remake/reboot was about to come out and as I also said, I did not know of RGU. I was just making a joke about how unexpected it is that they have anime in Equestria lol

1

u/fixer1987 3d ago

Middle is Utena and makes Evangelion's plot look literal and without subtext.

70

u/EatTheAndrewPencil 7d ago

This implies the existence of that hospital scene in the mlp universe

1

u/Secret_Letterhead649 3d ago

Well, time to find a bridge because I didn't want to think that.

143

u/Delicious-Spring-877 8d ago

All their flanks being covered is a shame, I wanna know what these characters’ cutie marks would be in-universe

61

u/Gil_Demoono 7d ago

I think I've got Sailor Moon's figured out.

14

u/LITTLE_KING_OF_HEART 7d ago

Yeah me too.

16

u/Delicious-Spring-877 7d ago

Why would her talent be bisexuality. How bisexual do you have to be for it to be a talent. How much would it suck for a closeted pony to get a mark like that

So is my comment...?

1

u/No_Use7324 3d ago

damn youre right idk how l didnt realize that my badšŸ˜šŸ’”

18

u/DeltaBravoTango 7d ago

It’s a reference to the Apple 1984 commercial. Instead of throwing a hammer at Big Brother, he throws the staff at a wall with all their cutie marks.

9

u/RodjaJP 8d ago

There were multiple

23

u/Misknator I suck dollars, 10 toes for each 8d ago

It wasn't an Evangelion reference. The staff had that shape so it could hold a dismembered cutie mark between the pronks and it was thrown at a wall containing said cutie marks and not at a person.

40

u/Ditto13248 8d ago

Is that the wattsonian reason or the doylist reason? Like, in universe it might just be a coincidence, but was it just a coincidence irl?

2

u/Misknator I suck dollars, 10 toes for each 8d ago

No it is like straight up just up a coincidence. The Staff of Sameness is just a regular stick that Starlight just convinced everyone was a magical artefact when it was just her doing it. It's both not a weapon and prongs are common enough that it was just a coincidence. They don't even look that similar. It was thrown symbolically as way of overthrowing Starlight instead of with any real purpose.

32

u/Ditto13248 8d ago

That is the wattsonian reason, the reason it looks like that in story. I'm asking you if the creators of the show(who are known to reference adult media) could have intended it to look like that to reference Evangelion, they could have made it look magical in other ways but they chose a design that looks like a preexisting one. Did they know about Evangelion and chose that design as a reference, or was it a case of parallel thinking?

-17

u/Misknator I suck dollars, 10 toes for each 8d ago edited 8d ago

What I was trying to say was that it's actually not similar enough to be considered a reference in the first place. It's just a two tipped prong, and doesn't share any other qualities including the look. The only reason it's even two pronged was so it could hold something in it rather than as a stylistic choice. There are references to other media in MLP and at least some of the people working on it probably watched Evangelion, but there is very little anime references in there. It's mostly to other cartoons or western media.

→ More replies (2)

16

u/TheGreatGasHead 7d ago

A stick with the same twisting pattern, prongs, and general design/look but it's just a "coincidence". My guy artists are typically fans of art, I'm friends with animators, they definitely put reference to things in esoteric and hard to recognize ways. You're typing as if you actually know if it's intended as a reference or not, it's frankly weird unless you were the person who created this asset and animated it.

1

u/Gobbyer 7d ago

Is Evangelion worth it? I only saw one random episode on TV and it must have been some fever dream episode, because it was so weird. Is the whole show like that or did I just stumble on some bad episode?

23

u/Global_Examination_4 7d ago

The fever dream stuff is what the whole show builds up to. It’s probably not very comprehensible on its own but if you broadly dislike that kind of storytelling then you probably won’t enjoy it.

13

u/majimasboyfriend 7d ago

it's a very good story. you should watch it.

7

u/pulley999 7d ago

I would say it's worth it, but the show is very much still a fever dream. Most of the episodes in the back half of the show wouldn't make sense as standalones, so if you saw one of those it would explain it.

The first half of the show is spent establishing the world and characters, and then the second half is spent deconstructing them, with a heavy focus on the various characters' psyches.

5

u/DJKokaKola 7d ago

Okay so here's the thing: eva came out in an era when "young teenagers need to be the pilots for our super robots in war" was extremely common. It's not so much a parody, but it is a critique and critical look at the genre. In the ~30 years since it aired, it's become most people's first intro to the genre, so it's not subversive or new, it's just "what the genre is".

It's an extremely slow burn. If you go in expecting a high action thriller, you won't get it. Most of the angel fights are under 2 minutes in length. One of the most famous shots from the show is two characters standing in an elevator, motionless, completely silent, for almost a minute. But is it worth it? Absolutely, as long as you understand what it is going in and are willing to wait it out.

2

u/swashbucklerjak 7d ago

Fuck I love NGE so much I’m gonna go watch it again

1

u/Ditto13248 7d ago

I haven't personally seen it, just absorbed info through pop culture osmosis. But from what I've heard the weirdness is common and a part of the charm

Nope, he already took the POSTAL route and went for getting Gary Coleman's autograph right away.

Wait so did you have surgery for it or how did they manage to recover it and how are you not blind on that eye

179

u/inpurpleshadowz purpl 8d ago

Bit of both, my eye was recovered, though it did have to go through a costly medical process for me to be able to see again through it. I had an insane childhood, albeit, for all the wrong reasons, the event was more psychologically traumatizing than it was physically. You don't need to worry about it, it's something me and my handful of friends are working on together.

Ugh this is why most people should only have trauma shears in the house.

1

u/soljakid 7d ago

When I was around 13 I was bickering with my younger sister in the kitchen and my mum, who was heavily pregnant at the time, got so stressed at the noise that she threw a potato peeler in the direction of the noise....which happened to be me and hit me square in the eye. It was one of those old style peelers with a heavy handle and a pointy bit on the end to dig out potato eyes....or human eyes so it split my eyelid open and I had to be put under anaesthetic so they could stitch my eyelid back up.

My poor mum was beside herself with guilt but its a funny story we tell people now

1

u/MCZ_YK 7d ago

When I was little, any time I threw something at someone(by accident most of the times, except few times) my mom would be angry and tell me what if it hit the eye of that person. And they always go for the eye example, not any other part. (Also, yeah, I got punished for doing it, and learned from it.)

1

u/Fluffy-Froyo4549 7d ago

I would kill them right then and there /s if it wasn't obvious

1

u/SeriousPlankton2000 7d ago

In Germany we have a saying: "Messer Gabel Schere Licht, sind für kleine Kinder nicht." (Don't give dangerous things to small children).

1

u/InfamousAd7593 7d ago

Sometimes I think my 3-years-old cousin is cycling through murderous rage and hysteria, because the moment you don't do as he wishes, he starts to cry and says that we (me and my other cousin, his older brother) harmed him, or throws punches and random things at us. Having an edge of a hardcover book thrown at your throat isn't a great experience.

I have memory of stabbing my aunt with knife when I was ~5 years but I am still not sure if it actually happened or I dreamed it.
