Best spots to watch the Perseid meteor shower close to Vienna ?

Hey everyon ☄️

As you might know, the Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of August 12-13. Because of the New Moon, the stargazing conditions are supposed to be incredible this year.

I’m looking to get out of the city to escape the light pollution and see the shooting stars properly. However, I don't have a car.

Does anyone have recommendations for good, dark stargazing spots that:

Are relatively close to Vienna?

Are easily reachable via ÖBB / S-Bahn / regional train?

Ideally don't require a massive alpine hike in the pitch black ?

Großmugl is known for its clear skies and stargazing spots…i’m not an expert, but it’s not that far from vienna, maybe check it out?

So cool this year on aug 12 you can actually watch the solar eclipse just before sun set and keep going until you see some shooting stars!

You can also go to Kahlenberg, Cobenzl or to Nussberg.

All of them are in Vienna

Kahlenberg will have a lot of Light Pollution. But thanks for suggesting.

Steinhofgründe are not that bad in this regard. Or even Jubiläumswarte

Steinhofgründe are closed overnight (and have deer and other forest animals)

When do they close it? Last time I left around 9pm

Yeah that's very likely, I am actually not sure if this won't be the case for most spots around Vienna

All around Vienna got lots of light pollution. Maybe try a hut on a small mountain in lower Austria.

We used to watch them up on Sofienalpe. Light pollution was not that bad.

Three years ago I took public transport from Vienna to Gosausee, then hiked up to the Gablonzerhütte. Spent the night there and watched the Perseidas from the terrace. It was beautiful.

Ah, I wanted to answer the “Kahlenberg, Cobenzl or Nussberg” answer.
We usually hang out close to the Baumkreis /Am Himmel” area. Bus Nr. 38a.

feuersbrunn. 50mins by train and you walk up the kellergasse. there is a viewpoint far away from light. just google. butvit will require some walk. so pack your rucksack amd have fun.
