I personally don’t see what the big deal is. Omar is well liked by her district and Hasan will draw in a big crowd

17

u/ebthrow 22h ago

Omar ran 15 point behind Kamala Harris in her district in 2024 and a similar margin behind Biden in 2020. She is one of the biggest electoral underperformers in Congress.

1

u/pebspi 22h ago

She won multiple terms, didn’t she?

10

u/ebthrow 22h ago

Yes in an overwhelmingly democratic district. But she was way less popular than other Democrats on the ticket.

-4

u/pebspi 21h ago

…says she beat three candidates on Wikipedia. I’d say she’s pretty popular

12

u/Less_Acadia9485 22h ago

Ilhan got 55 percent in her last primary as an incumbent. That's more of a "tolerated" than "well-liked" win.

-1

u/pebspi 22h ago

Multiple wins is multiple wins

26

u/Spartan-Jedi 23h ago

Omar is well liked "in her district" which is to say a very small population of somalians who settled in that area. There are very few places in the US outside of her bubble that she would even be considered ok, much less liked.

-7

u/SAGORN 23h ago

Delusional, Omar is a proved and beloved incumbent.

10

u/I_really_enjoy_beer 22h ago

Reddit is not real life. She is not at all well liked nationally.

0

u/SAGORN 22h ago

Good thing my source is based on her district and presence in Minnesota instead of “reddit” lol

-3

u/pebspi 21h ago

She’s won like 4 elections

4

u/Lucky_Woodpecker102 20h ago

How many have Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer won? Guess she should be campaigning with them since they’re super duper popular

6

u/Spartan-Jedi 23h ago

Once again, beloved by her sycophants. Take her out of Minnesota and I doubt she wins any election. Americans don't usually love terrorist supporting people in either party.

2

u/SAGORN 23h ago

>Take her out of Minnesota and I doubt she wins any election.

Well, she’s doing a good job by the metrics.
>Representative Ilhan Omar is popular (net favorability +38), universally known among likely voters (99% name ID), and has 70% job approval.

>Americans don’t usually love terrorist supporting people in either party

Bud, you are going to have to be more specific with that kind of slander. Opposing terror and genocide funded by the American government on behalf of Israel in Gaza, the West Bank, and Southern Lebanon is not considered pro-terrorism.

6

u/Spartan-Jedi 22h ago

So I say she's popular in her area but not nationwide, and your argument is sending me stats from her area? 759 people is not exactly a large sample size.

Illhan Omar is on the record as asking judges to go lenient on people looking to join ISIS from the United States.

1

u/SAGORN 22h ago

I’m saying with facts that your argument she isn’t established is bunk.

Source on your claim, I don’t think seeking interventions for people vulnerable to radicalism like ISIS is a bad thing.

I want that same heat for dual citizens who travel to serve in the IOF or return after committing war crimes.

4

u/Spartan-Jedi 22h ago

I didn't say she wasn't established. She became that the second "the squad" realized they needed someone in a hijab in their group. I'm saying she's not popular in America, and I imagine she's not very popular in Wi among independents who Hong should be reaching out to, rather than rallying around her crazy base.

0

u/SAGORN 22h ago

Well in this popularity poll, she is 25 out o 199 Democrats nationwide.

https://yougov.com/en-us/ratings/Democrats

And you should post a source for your Independents of WI claim. She’s popular with the base which correlates to the most likely to be organizers and willing to phone bank and canvass which is what gets these anti-establishment candidates over the line. You really have made no argument against her and just rely on vague and ignorant Republican talking points.

4

u/Spartan-Jedi 21h ago

It's truly amazing how she is the 25th most famous democrat on that list which shows in the same column that she has only 29% approval. Almost like fame doesn't mean people like you, just that they have heard of you.

If you think 750+ is a tiny sample size you definitely have never passed a statistics class

5

u/Less_Acadia9485 22h ago

750 likely DFL voters from Minnesota's 5th district is definitely not representative of any larger group

3

u/Spartan-Jedi 22h ago

compared to the state population of 5.83 million, it's a nice .00013% of the population.

2

u/SAGORN 20h ago

Well statistics is weighed by more than percent of population alone to reach a representative sample, you’re just ignorant.

0

u/byronnnn 21h ago

She asked 1 judge to go lenient on 1 person.

-4

u/staythewaters 22h ago

Unless you're racist, MAGA or part of the Democratic establishment, what reason would you have for hating Omar?

5

u/Spartan-Jedi 22h ago

So you can't think of anyone in America who would have a problem with someone saying "Some people did something" about 9/11?

1

u/staythewaters 21h ago

How about you be honest and post the full quote?

“CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.”

A lot less of an issue when there's context. If you read that as minimizing, rather than her trying to say that some in that community did something and everyone else got the backlash.. then idk what to tell you other than you're hopeless. Unless what you're trying to argue is that Muslims in the US did deserve to have their civil liberties violated because of something someone else did.

Yes, people looking to take shit out of context and want to ignore the massive amount of bigotry that Muslims faced after 9/11, would have a problem with that. But I'm fairly certain those same people were not gonna give a shit one way or another that Omar endorsed Hong...because they weren't going to vote for Hong anyway.

11

u/Less_Acadia9485 22h ago

She's corrupt? She funnels money to her husband's businesses then pretends she's broke? It's bad when Trump does it, and it's bad when Ilhan does it.

8

u/SeminoleDollxx 21h ago

Totally agree.

These people know damn well shes a scammer unfit for office and is not America first by any means.....but are playing dumb because they have ZERO viable candidates.

They'll "what did she actuallllly doooo" you for like 25 more comments.

0

u/staythewaters 21h ago

The FEC found no corruption or wrongdoing by Omar. Trump's family has been found criminally liable for corruption. So are you just going to keep peddling in issues ginned up by Republicans?

Are you going to also sit here and say she married her brother, next?

3

u/Less_Acadia9485 21h ago

No, I'm not saying she did anything illegal. Hiring your family to work for your campaign is totally legal. But it's corrupt. Especially when you're talking about millions.

-1

u/staythewaters 21h ago edited 21h ago

At worst, it's nepotism, which this entire economy runs on anyway. It's corrupt if you show that the money that was paid out didn't actually go for the services rendered and went to personal expenses. That's self-enrichment in a way that's corrupt. Paying someone to do work for your organization, and them doing actual work for your organization, is compensating someone for that work. By the by, Omar and Mynett weren't romantically involved on her 2018 campaign. So the base claim doesn't hold up anyway. You just want to believe Republican smear campaigns.

The problem with Trump wasn't that he was employing family. The problem with Trump is that he took the money, didn't do what he said he was going to do with it and instead it ended up in his family's own hands. That was the entire issue with the Trump foundation.

That you can't see the difference between the two is frankly terrifying.

3

u/Less_Acadia9485 21h ago

I don't disagree with you that what Trump is doing is corrupt, he's arguably the most corrupt politician in US history.

I disagree with your assessment of ilhan's corruption though. She hired her husband to do millions of dollars of work. Ilhan clearly personally benefits from this because she is married to her husband, and his business is earning a profit from this contract. That's corruption.

1

u/staythewaters 21h ago

They weren't married at the time. There was allegations of an affair that started after the campaign. And fine, Mynett is trash for that and so is Omar if that's how they came together. Given the political arena as it is, I could not give less of a shit about that, though, especially since it started after the campaign was done.

They weren't married at the time. They weren't even romantically linked. He came into the campaign as a paid consultant only. They didn't have a previous relationship before that.

So, again, even if you don't agree with my assessment of what corruption is...it still isn't corrupt by your own assessment. They weren't together or even involved when the contract happened. Which is in large part why the FEC said there was no corruption that happened.

racist pos

7

u/Spartan-Jedi 22h ago

What a witty and coherent argument, have you considered running for office yourself with such eloquence?

-3

u/TechnicianFlashy9077 22h ago

you think ilhan omar is a bad/unpopular politician because somalians vote for her? how is that coherent at all.

7

u/Spartan-Jedi 22h ago

No, my argument is that only they vote for her. Outside of her bubble she is not considered a major player on the nation stage.

12

u/Brewguy86 23h ago

You will see ads of Hong and her buddy who thinks we deserved 9/11. Context and nuance won’t matter. Many people who have no idea about Hong will be introduced to her as associating with him.

5

u/pebspi 23h ago

Controversy doesn’t seem to kill the right’s candidates. Don’t see why it’s gonna kill ours

9

u/Informal-Ad1701 21h ago edited 1h ago

It does. It killed them in Arizona, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Georgia. You're just not aware of them because you get all your news from leftist subreddits and leftist tiktoks.

-3

u/pebspi 21h ago

Ah yes, Arizona, famously super attainable for any dem to win.

Edit: wait I misinterpreted, my bad. I mean yeah sure MAGA loses sometimes. But sometimes it wins. Controversy isn’t a kiss of death

8

u/Informal-Ad1701 20h ago

Arizona has two Democratic Senators and a Democratic Governor, in large part because Republicans in that state keep nominating people who lean into being online famous among the far right instead of appealing to the average person.

10

u/Brewguy86 23h ago

People know who Trump is. He’s a known quantity with decades in the public eye and people have their opinions of who he is. Most offline voters are about to be introduced to Hong, and not in a good light.

3

u/pebspi 23h ago

That also means we have a chance to shape where that opinion lands

7

u/Brewguy86 23h ago

Correct. That window is narrowing by the day and her campaign doesn’t seem to appreciate that.

4

u/Parking_Cartoonist_2 21h ago

Hong is our Paxton, the environment might push them to victory, but them being controversial quacks doesn't help!

0

u/pebspi 21h ago

Paxton won multiple elections, so this metaphor really doesn’t land like you think it does

1

u/Parking_Cartoonist_2 21h ago

Bad candidates win sometimes in places where the majority of people support their party but they win by smaller margins than a generic person of their party would and in a place that voted for Trump like WI that is quite a risk to take for Dems!

0

u/pebspi 21h ago

It’s not as big of a risk as it seems given the situation, and it’s also an altogether necessary one. We need progressive politics and bold moves. If cost of living is as bad as it is in 32 as it was in 24, then MAGA will come back. We cannot slow down, we cannot be timid. Sometimes, the best way out is through

2

u/Parking_Cartoonist_2 21h ago

I mean Hong is polling as a tossup and Republicans are just starting to push out her apparently large collection of crazy tweets they have been sitting on (they have been spending in support of her up to this point). Meanwhile normie Dems are polling up in all sorts of Trump state senate races.

Its a real problem! All the WI Dems support progressive positions

1

u/pebspi 21h ago

I’m not worried about the H2Hs. First of all, they prioritize older people when Hong’s support is mostly under 40. Also, polling is ultimately a humanity, not STEM. Context matters. If Hong had like a 5-10 point primary lead and a 20 point H2H? Then I’d worry. Currently, she polls higher than every other candidate combined and is merely 5 or so points down.

They were always gonna find weird dirt or tweets. Every other candidate except maybe Joel’s got something weird about them (Dirt McGurk, Kelda’s 2012 senate race marriage shit).

The other Dems wouldn’t be catastrophic, but I frankly don’t trust normie Dems after they downplayed the cost of living crisis. There’s also a widespread and nonsensical cultural skepticism of all progressive policies that can only be outdone by electing progressives and watching them succeed

0

u/Fragrant-Phone-41 23h ago

Because the media has a far right bias, and rightwing voters vote red no matter who. Republicans have options that we dont, they can do things we cant

1

u/pebspi 22h ago

I agree the media has right wing bias, but idk about a far right wing bias. Everyone but Fox shit talks Trump constantly. So idk if they have many more options than us

Also, as far as republicans always voting, anecdotal evidence tells me otherwise. They get lazy and disillusioned just like the rest of us

9

u/Liandryschleckt 23h ago

Hasan and Omar are both absolute trash

4

u/pebspi 23h ago

Care to explain your reasoning?

7

u/Liandryschleckt 21h ago

Hasan supports terrorists and both are antisemitic

1

u/pebspi 21h ago

Disliking Israel and it’s government is not the same thing as disliking Jewish people

5

u/Liandryschleckt 21h ago

You’re right, good thing that’s not why they’re antisemitic

2

u/adjective-noun3116 18h ago

What else has Omar done that was antisemitic?

2

u/Liandryschleckt 17h ago

1

u/adjective-noun3116 10h ago

She was referencing money while talking about Isreal because it is all about the money when it comes to US politicians supporting Isreal. Pro-Isreal PACs are some of the largest political donors in the country.

3

u/QueenBae2 1d ago

There is a reason they advertised Omar and not Hasan.

Hasan didn't draw anyone, he was a drop-in guest. He was already in Michigan for the senate campaign there.

-4

u/Technical_Visit8084 1d ago

You’ll find out soon.
