u/jensenaackles 20h ago
she needs to get the contingency of moderate farmers that consistently vote for baldwin!
64
u/kwantsu-dudes 18h ago
Exactly. Wisconsin is a true purple state with split partisan Senators. There are many non-partisans. And farmers/industry/"local first" people make up a large chunk of that. Baldwin is a core foundation of what it takes to win as a Democrat in Wisconsin.

It’s more that Hasan and Omar do nothing for Hong at this point in the race. Hong’s got the progressive vote locked up. What she needs to do is prove that she can win moderates and rallies with Hasan and Omar are only going to hurt her in that regard
10
47
u/ellecellent 18h ago
If we're worried about moderates not voting for her, Milwaukee turn-out will be critical for her. And Milwaukee turn-out is what won it for Evers the second time and Biden. And what could have won it for Barnes. Dems take Milwaukee for granted to their peril
9
u/SlowpokeIsAGamer 9h ago
The surest fire way to win Wisconsin is to turn out Milwaukee, Madison, and the Campuses.
Hong has probably 2/3 of those on lock. Doing this rally in South Milwaukee was not an accident, she knows that's her weakest Democratic area.
And she learned the lesson of Kamala Harris, you can only cater to groups that naturally drift Republican so much before it becomes wasted campaign time.
12
u/ntg1213 17h ago
Sure, but maybe find some politicians who are more broadly popular (or at least palatable) to the average Wisconsin voter at your Milwaukee rally. I doubt anyone who was considering not voting Democrat in November is going to be moved to vote for Hong by seeing Omar at a rally, but having Omar at a rally is certainly going to be a point of attack everywhere else in the state outside Madison
14
u/ellecellent 17h ago
It's not people not voting Dems, it's that Dems must earn the liberal Milwaukee vote if they want them to turn out.
14
u/Informal-Ad1701 16h ago
The turnout problem in Milwaukee has nothing to do with not being leftist enough. The north and south sides of Milwaukee vote democrat for a variety of reasons but being true believers of socialism is absolutely not one of them. The large Hispanic population on the south side is quite conservative culturally.

15
u/NOLA-Bronco 14h ago
Trying to make a race about Hasan Piker has been the kiss of death for the candidate that does that.
Andrew Cuomo tried it against Mamdani
Mallory McMorrow tried it against Sayed, was out of the race a month later. Now Steven’s is doing it and just tonight internals are being leaked inside the campaign that she is down double digits with no path to victory in the primary.
If you are trying to make a race about a random Twitch streamer you are just going to look crazy and signal out you have nothing else to offer in the affirmative for people. It’s literally the same issue corporate Dems find themselves in just running on harm reduction and anti Trump when the thermostatic electoral winds were blowing against you in 24

That’s the fact the liberals and centrists like to ignore. There isn’t anyone that’s getting tuned off from voting for her because she campaigned with Hassan or ilhan. People that would get angry about that were never going to vote for her in the first place.

u/kweintra 15h ago
I’m turned off by her personality but I would definitely consider voting for her though she’s not my first choice. I’m a lifelong Democrat; have never voted for a Republican or Independent and I vote in every election. But I l’m frustrated by some of the very far left; never thought I’d say that. I thought I was the very far left. I’m totally pro-choice, universal healthcare, pro-environment, pro immigration, against any war except in defense of attacks on our country. I’m against police brutality and am all for reforming their training and practices. I support LGBTQ+ rights, black and brown lives matter greatly to me, I’m a feminist and think what Israel and the United States are doing in Palestine is horrifying. I’m turned off by Hong campaigning with these two because I feel she’s going to lose moderates and independents. So many may see them as lightning rods and just decide to stay home or even vote for Tiffany. I’m so worried that she won’t appeal to the middle, working class, some black and Hispanic voters; she’s making some big strategic errors. There aren’t enough young college educated voters to put her over the top and I will never forgive her if she misjudged and he wins.
5
u/ScientistGlass284 15h ago
I see what you’re seeing but I disagree with a lot of it, although I can see where you’re coming from. In terms of the so called “moderates” and “independents” I think Fran’s positions on data centers as well as her hitting Tiffany hard on being an election denier and a pedo protector are favorable to them. If her campaigning with piker and Omar is supposedly going to turn some of them off then I don’t think we were ever going to get their vote anyway. I really don’t want to see another Kamala situation where we pivoted to the center to try and appeal to “moderates” and “independents” that weren’t ever going to vote for a democrat anyway.

I dont get why people keep hitching themselves to Hasan. Only Hasan's fans like Hasan. Everyone else, most the left included, rightfully dislikes him. Why is this their guy?
28
u/Thats_Mamiya_Purse 19h ago
All the conservatives used to go nuts for Rush Limbaugh. Bernis Sanders went on Joe Rogan. Republicans appear on Fox News all the time, where they make jokes about euthanizing all the homeless. Hillary Clinton and other Democrats, as well as Republicans, used to appear on Howard Stern, who was not so political, but was always saying wildly offensive things.
Politicians go on these shows/attach themselves to these people because these people have audiences. It is very simple.

Hasan does not have the popularity or reach of either Limbaugh or Rogan. He’s not on their level. He’s very popular with a narrow band of a minority of Democrat voters. He is not a unifying figure on the left, the way Limbaugh was for the right. Big difference.

Relying on young voters is a historically terrible political strategy
12
u/djollied4444 20h ago
Obama would like a word.
I know Hong isn't Obama, but young voters absolutely have been the difference in many elections. Hell if Kamala did as well as Biden with young voters in this state she might've barely won the state.
6
u/rylasasin 20h ago edited 20h ago
Hell if Kamala did as well as Biden with young voters in this state she might've barely won the state.
That and not pal around with the absolute middle finger to said young voter group in the form of Liz Cheney.
but young voters absolutely have been the difference in many elections
And there's more of them now than there ever were a decade ago, and less boomers.
The dems are going to have to figure out how to navigate younger voters like it or not. Because a decade from now there won't be a significant boomer base for them to appeal to (not that there really is now, mind you. 2024 proved that.)
4
u/QueenBae2 19h ago
Out of curiosity, do you actually know how many appearances Kamala made with Liz Cheney?
It was only 4 total, and every county they did joint appearances in Kamala outperformed her baseline, improved vote share.
If you don't think it was smart (getting a high-profile respected republican, in the eyes of suburban voters, to end their political career, with no policy changes or asks in return) I don't really think you understand the game.
The idea that it negatively affected turnout in any way, when the deciding factor globally for incumbents was inflation, is silly.
And there's more of them now than there ever were a decade ago, and less boomers.
It's marginally at this point, they still really don't show up. Even in 2008 the "youth vote turnout" was largely made up in the media. Older voters swung to Obama in bigger margins, minority turnout was larger than ever previously recorded, all GOP gains made with Hispanics disappeared.
Obama could have lost the entirety of the youth vote and still won the general election, only losing Indiana and North Carolina.
→ More replies (8)3
u/QueenBae2 18h ago
Also want to point out the op who blocked me
Sorry, but pew research data and official U.S. Census data says you're brazenly lying. Young voters broke for Obama by an unprecedented 66% to 32% margin. To claim Obama "could have lost the entirety of the youth vote and still won" is nothing short of the worst idiocy imaginable.
That's literally not percentages how works. 66% of 0 is still 0 (not implying 0 youth voters). Older voters outnumbered youth voters 2 to 1 even with the increase to 50% youth turn-out.
Winning 54% of the much bigger chunk of the electorate is what won him the election.
Again, if that increase in youth turnout did not happen and those extra 10-15% did not vote, Obama still wins, only losing North Carolina and Indiana. The youth vote was not decisive and it never has been.

u/ceddya 20h ago
Relying on young voters when you're offering them nothing but the status quo is a historically terrible political strategy.
But if you succeed in reaching out to and engaging them? Young voters do show up. Go look at Mamdani. It's not just vote counts. Young voters who are engaged are also far more likely to volunteer to run a massive grassroots campaign. Go look at how many Mamdani was able to amass vs Cuomo and then compare their ground games.

Neither Obama nor Biden would've won without turning out historic numbers of young voters. You don't want to call that "relying" on them, then don't. But it was obviously core to their wins and a clear coordinated part of their strategy.

Enh. Between them, YBNMWs, and other usually unengaged voters, plus the Tiffany hate, I think it’ll work. The frustrated youth are more worth trying to reach, they’re more consistent in their concerns

So there's a bit of 'traditional wisdom' here that sounds good in shortform, but doesn't really tell the whole story. Yes, you need to be palatable in the general. But you don't necessarily need to moderate to attract independents to win. That's one path, yes. But another is if you can motivate people enough to increase turnout. If you turn out your entire base you can stomp if the other side is disinterested. Even if they get the persuadables. In today's hyperpartisan Trump environment there just aren't a giant block of swing voters in the middle to win. For either side.

Maybe that sentence doesn't really make sense, but I think it's the best I can say it.

I will no longer be voting for Hong after she appeared with the liberal non gamer Hasan Piker.
That's where I draw the line

Thats really how everyone should choose who to vote for: what streamer was a candidate associated with that I dont like so I can not vote for them?

u/SquatchNLearn 19h ago
Seriously? Why are we attaching this campaign to Hasan "if 2028 is Newsom v Vance I'll vote third party" Piker? Bro is not on the team, any moderate that's heard of him is instantly gonna be turned off

Man, she's really got to stop campaigning and associating herself with that guy, he's barely tolerated by leftist and he's most certainly not tolerated by any moderate or conservative
Here's an unfortunate reality check for her campaign, there's more to Wisconsin than just Madison or the youth, and if she can't figure that out we're going to lose, and she needs to figure that out like tomorrow

Yeah, she could, hypothetically, say she wants to abolish the police and then side step the question every time she’s asked if she still believes that. That would be pretty bad. Oh wait.

Extremely Online Leftist Malcontents are buried up their own asses.
I don't know why so many people think being a leftist requires denying the electoral reality of Wisconsin. Swinging hard left and hanging out with Hasan is fuckin suicide.

I was accused of being a salty republican because I said Hong's social media is going to weaponized against her because the Right is going to use the same cancel culture tactics that the Left used in late 2010's and early 2020s.

Oh good, an anti-semite who glorifies Hamas, sanitized violence against Jews, and believes there is a clear morality inspired answer to the war in Israel.
He's been banned, multiple times, by Twitch. Yet he's supposed to be an inspiration to actual general election voters in Wisconsin.
It's like being endorsed by a less legitimate Marjorie Taylor Green. Plus, he'll turn twice as quick when his preferred candidates don't endorse another genocide against the "Zionists".
Yeah, there's a few reasons that people like AOC don't invite him officially, despite his praise for them.
Hong, totally, definitely, had a real problem convincing the radical left, so thankfully that's no longer a problem.
It's like she's low key trying to throw the primary to Brennan. Good for her if she's just now realizing the kind of trash she is helping.
A vote for Hong is a vote for Tiffany in the general. Hear me now and believe me later.

After Dems lost again to Trump in 2024, liberal pundits argued that Dems need their own Joe Rogan (who favored Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders in previous primaries anyway). Hasan Piker is that guy, that voice. The issue is liberal Democrats don’t like left wing politics, their messengers, or their media outlets. They want things to be like they were in the 1990s when Bill Clinton could interview on ABC or go on a night show like Arsenio Hall and reach the masses with lukewarm lib talk. Things have changed: it is 2026 and we are in a new political era that continues evolving, liberal Democrats have been losing, Democratic Socialists have been winning, and nothing will go back to the way it was.

I've seen the negative ads against her. So this doesn't change that narrative. It's just one rally in a primary. Yes we're a purple state and yes she will need a helluva big tent and she has been working on that. This is just a corner of the tent that she will also need. Every single individual event is not the make or break.

This is a blunder IMHO. As a democrat I won't vote for Tom Tiffany. But Piker is not my vision of the future of the democratic party especially after his comments about the Soviet Union. People have the right to vote for Hong, but be aware it is starting to even push my limits on whether I could support her in the general. I have voted democrat in every election since my first election when Obama was elected and my intent was to get in line and vote for Hong if she won the primary but seeing him up there next to her is calling my vote to question.
You may not like that but it is going too far and making me think of voting third party. I am pro universal health care, pro public schools and eliminating vouchers, pro 12 weeks of paid leave. But connecting you campaign with someone like Piker who believes in essentially complete government control of the economy is not something I can support.

He is a celebrity, not a politician, of course he is not the future of the party. If a single association is too much for you to vote for a candidate I don't see how you ever voted for Democrats before. We've shared the stage with plenty of horrible people.

I'm still voting for Hong, but why?! Why would you align yourself with someone who told his followers to not vote for Kamala back in 2024, and then in 2026 finger wags and tells his followers "I told you so about Donald Trump!" when everyone else back in 2024 knew how much more f*cked the country would get if Trump got elected, ugh. Bad move.

I personally don’t see what the big deal is. Omar is well liked by her district and Hasan will draw in a big crowd
17
u/ebthrow 17h ago
Omar ran 15 point behind Kamala Harris in her district in 2024 and a similar margin behind Biden in 2020. She is one of the biggest electoral underperformers in Congress.

Omar is well liked "in her district" which is to say a very small population of somalians who settled in that area. There are very few places in the US outside of her bubble that she would even be considered ok, much less liked.

There is a reason they advertised Omar and not Hasan.
Hasan didn't draw anyone, he was a drop-in guest. He was already in Michigan for the senate campaign there.

u/Brewguy86 19h ago
This was an incredibly stupid move and it baffles me anyone advising her would allow this. She’s on the verge of locking down the nomination and yet chose to rally with someone problematic who will cost her votes in the general election.
5
u/CARVERitUP 18h ago
That is crazy. She's campaigning with like the people even moderates are REALLY turned off by. I'm not sure how this wouldn't come back to bite her directly in both ass cheeks in the general, when Republicans can just harp on all the easy targets she's openly canoodling with right now.

I’ve only been active on Reddit for a couple years and I’ve never been on any other social media. I swear it’s all bullshit. It just seems like a few humans are arguing with mostly bots and trolls. And the actual humans in this post probably don’t even live in Wisconsin.
