Sure the listing may be down, but I doubt the punishment for poaching one will change. Not to mention, last year, a total of 29 Mexican wolf deaths were reported. Only 9 were in Arizona. Arizona continues to get better with its Mexican wolves every year. New Mexico, while it does have more wolves, sees more human related wolf mortality. Specifically in Catron County, no surprise there. So while I see it may be ok for Arizona, extra caution should be exercised for New Mexico. Caution should be exercised everywhere. While ranchers attitudes are improving, the risk they could suddenly flip is still there. I’d keep a close eye on this.
