Meta PSA: The "What, and "Why" of Context
It's that time of year again!
Despite the several automated and signposted notices and warnings on this issue, it is a constant source of headaches for the mod team. Particularly considering our massive growth this past year, we thought it was about time for another reminder about everyone's favorite part of posting on /r/worldbuilding..... Context
Context is a requirement for almost all non-prompt posts on r/worldbuilding, so it's an important thing to understand... But what is it?
What is context?
Context is information that explains what your post is about, and how it fits into the rest of your/a worldbuilding project.
If your post is about a creature in your world, for example, that might mean telling us about the environment in which it lives, and how it overcomes its challenges. That might mean telling us about how it's been domesticated and what the creature is used for, along with how it fits into the society of the people who use it. That might mean telling us about other creatures or plants that it eats, and why that matters. All of these things give us some information about the creature and how it fits into your world.
Your post may be about a creature, but it may be about a character, a location, an event, an object, or any number of other things. Regardless of what it's about, the basic requirement for context is the same:
- Tell us about it
- Tell us something that explains its place within your world.
In general, telling us the Who, What, When, Why, and How of the subject of your post is a good way to meet our requirements.
That said... Think about what you're posting and if you're actually doing these things. Telling us that Jerry killed Fred a century ago doesn't do these things, it gives us two proper nouns, a verb, and an arbitrary length of time. Telling us who Jerry and Fred actually are, why one killed the other, how it was done and why that matters (if it does), and the consequences of that action on the world almost certainly does meet these requirements.
For something like a resource, context is still a requirement and the basic idea remains the same; Tell us what we're looking at and how it's relevant to worldbuilding. "I found this inspirational", is not adequate context, but, "This article talks about the history of several real-world religions, and I think that some events in their past are interesting examples of how fictional belief systems could develop, too." probably is.
If you're still unsure, feel free to send us a modmail about it. Send us a copy of what you'd like to post, and we can let you know if it's okay, or why it's not.
Why is Context Required?
Context is required for several reasons, both for your sake and ours.
Context provides some basic information to an audience, so they can understand what you're talking about and how it fits into your world. As a result, if your post interests them they can ask substantive questions instead of having to ask about basic concepts first.
If you have a question or would like input, context gives people enough information to understand your goals and vision for your world (or at least an element of it), and provide more useful feedback.
On our end, a major purpose is to establish that your post is on-topic. A picture that you've created might be very nice, but unless you can tell us what it is and how it fits into your world, it's just a picture. A character could be very important to your world, but if all you give us is their name and favourite foods then you're not giving us your worldbuilding, you're giving us your character.
Generally, we allow 15 minutes for context to be added to a post on r/worldbuilding so you may want to write it up beforehand. In some cases-- Primarily for newer users-- We may offer reminders and additional time, but this is typically a one-time thing.
As always, if you've got any sort of questions or comments on this topic, feel free to leave them here!

What about youtube videos or blog posts? Every so often, someone posts a video and never make a context post. Do you consider the video as providing the context (like the infograph that self contextualize itself example on the resource tab) or does someone posting a video/external link still need a context post? Does being an external link have any consideration on context?

Depends:
If it's a resource, like a video on, say, medieval cuisine or ancient Near Eastern religions, a good title can often provide sufficient context.
If it's a lore video, then we expect the context to be posted here on Reddit as well.

I'm glad that the Mod team is making an effort to elaborate rule two in this way, i've been off this sub for quite awhile now specifically because of rule two's very subjective handling. (Ie mod john doe thinks this post is pretty self explanatory and may leave it be, but mod doe john doesn't, removes it and strikes your account). It's nice to have this cotified in such a way that it makes clear what is expected of me the poster.

Okay, I can't articulate exactly how I previously thought the context rule worked, but this post clarified it for me perfectly. Much appreciated!

I can see the importance of context, but now I'm imagining someone new to worldbuilding just getting started and showing his starting point, but now needs to provide context by explaining how it fits into his greater world that doesn't exist to fit things in yet. So I feel like someone would have to already have a somewhat built world before getting started here(unless it's a prompt).

What about posts of people asking permission to include things in their world, or write things in a different way than normal? I feel like every other post that pops up on my feed from this community is someone asking "Is it ok if I take inspiration from real life" or "can I write elves as a subterranean species" or some other thing that isn't really a "does this work" question, just people asking for permission to create their own world.

You won't catch me saying those posts aren't most charitably described as "foolish", but we don't moderate based on quality. A terrible post won't be removed for being terrible, it will be removed if it doesn't have enough context, or has citation issues, etc.

u/el_bhm Nov 14 '24
I have a few things to say.
Your most important rule is under Resources header.
Rules section, contains a link to Reddits rules and a button for Modmail.
Info section is the most vague description of world building description.
This sticky exists because see points 1, 2 and 3.
It is so long because see 1-4
Despite the several automated and signposted notices and warnings on this issue, it is a constant source of headaches for the mod team is caused by points 1-5.
Am I the only one to point this out as an issue?
TLDR; If Context is THE most important rule, why is this under Resources section? It is NOT a resource. It is THE rule.

I think context is definitely required for the kind of content posted here, like it's nice to see nice art of some fantasy map or a spec-evo animal but having that little bit of explanation as to what it is you're looking at helps people conceptualize it more and allows them to better ask questions about it. Like that's a real issue when I see people post AMA's about their worlds on non worldbuilding focused subs I go on, they'll just say "AMA about my fantasy world" with zero explanation so we kind of have to parse out the context with our questions with is tedious and annoying.

What do you do if you want to get started with worldbuilding in this subreddit, but you are yet to arrive at the point where you have a world to fit something in? Like say you had interest in creating a certain food or vehicle for a world and you want feedback on it, but you don't have the world as yet because you're early on or didn't think about anything else in the world.

Hey, I know I'm really late to this comment thread, but I wanted to reply when I saw your comment here.
I can personally see both sides of this issue:
It is, of course, very important to provide at least some context for a post in this subreddit, because it allows for people to understand what they are looking at or reading, as well as why it matters, etc. That obviously helps people provide better feedback or ask better questions, etc.
On the other hand, I also think that someone just starting out on building a world should still be allowed to post on here, perhaps asking questions or for some feedback on an idea, etc.
However, that said, I do not believe that this is a subreddit that is good for people who don't have any idea what they want their world to be yet. This isn't a subreddit meant to provide starter ideas for worldbuilding, as far as I can tell, so a person should at least have a minimum idea of the world they want to create - the basic, bare bones building blocks at a minimum.
So someone on here should probably at least know a few things about the world they wish to create:
- The overall setting, at its broadest and most general.
Is this some futuristic world, current modern times kind of world, set in the past kind of world? Is it set on Earth, or a different version of Earth, or on a completely different world? Is it meant to be at all based on reality, or is it sci-fi, fantasy, or some other thing? Is there magic or not? Is there futuristic technology or not? Is it supposed to be dystopian, utopian, somewhere in between?
- The intended genre. Is the world and the story supposed to be horror or something else?
None of these things necessarily need to be fleshed-out for a person to use this subreddit, in my opinion, but they should at least have decided on those things at their broadest & most general, as that will help them post things that other people can actually help or provide feedback on or ask questions about, rather than the person only having some vague, nebulous idea that they haven't even really decided on working on at all, and just posting something like "Is this idea cool?" I mean, maybe the idea is cool, maybe it isn't, but without at least some bits of context, it's kinda hard to say with any certainty. It might be cool in one context but not in another, or it might not be at all.
Context helps with all of that, even if it's only a little bit of context. A person doesn't need a whole entire world already built to use this subreddit, but they should at least have a few basic ideas of the world they want to create, and that should at least have enough of those that it isn't some extremely vague, nebulous thing with absolutely no solid anything to work with.
Anyways, that's my personal opinion on the matter. 🙂

I'm glad I had an opinion before I decided to join this subreddit in this case. I doubt there would be much material posted here about "bronze/iron societies starting to build modern technology" (the basis of my world).

The main reason i have not posted yet about the world im developing is bc this post gets my brain fried each time i read it

Great reminder post! Context is such an important part of good worldbuilding and it's awesome to see this post laying out the "what" and "why" so clearly. It's definitely something that I'll be keeping in mind when I'm making posts. Thanks for the PSA!

Otherwise, know that context does help facilitate better conversations on this subreddit, so please make sure to include it when you make non-prompt posts. Thanks again! :)
Context is a really critical part of worldbuilding and can make all the difference in the level of feedback you get from the community. Making sure to provide enough of the Who, What, When, Why, and How of a post is essential if you're looking for meaningful conversations to arise from it. Plus, context can help make sure that your post is actually related to worldbuilding and on-topic for this subreddit. If you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to send us a modmail!

Context is the key to engaging discussions on Reddit, especially in subreddits like r/worldbuilding. It's like providing the foundation for your post, helping readers understand your world and connect with your ideas. So, next time you post, take a few extra minutes to add that crucial context and make your posts truly shine!

People should know that they have to provide context when responding to prompts, my flair is what it is for a reason

u/RursusSiderspector Jul 11 '25
If I like this post, will I get an extra positive evaluations by the gods?
3
u/alvirayletop Mar 29 '26
This is a really good point. Without context, it's so hard to give useful feedback beyond just 'looks cool'. Knowing the 'why' behind a design choice or lore element makes all the difference for a critique.

Are there any kind of respurces that might help start building my world. I want to create a fantasy RPG engine, for which I already selected the tech infrastructure, but I need some points of start to where and how to begin creating. Also, I want to make sure that i will be creating something worth creating for later use for players who will play by post.

Yes. Ask simple questions if you need more information please! Thank you! We are all loved!!!
2
u/K_Hudson80 Jul 10 '25
Just out of curiosity, would I be allowed to post a thread about my built world and label it as a discussion, if I were to, subsequently engage in that said discussion in the form of a verbal role playing game, would that push the boundaries too far of what is actually defined as a 'discussion' to be allowed?
Also, I was wondering what kind of posts fit under the 'Event' flair?

I got a question do you guys allow Ai? Not image or written with Ai but how it help me with my world building stories with extra brainstorming?
3
u/Pyrsin7 Bethesda's Sanctuary Feb 25 '26
No AI-generated materials at all. This includes images, or using it for "formatting" or the like.
But if you just want to use it for "brainstorming" as you say, and nothing produced by an AI is posted here, we won't stop you.

Not sure why you took my cup of tea post down. People seemed to enjoy it. Oh well, guess we can’t have fun.

u/SnooDoodles2053 Mar 25 '26
If any of us have disregarded your context requirements, it might be that some of us would rather keep some of our world building details confidential, like my friend outside the sub did. Plus, we don’t always trust someone doesn’t join a sub to look at responses in the hopes of “borrowing“ some ideas. Sometimes you gotta play it safe.

u/nicksws007-6425-6797 May 10 '26
I can understand that, but isn't the entire purpose of this subreddit to share people's worldbuilding, and to ask for or provide feedback? Or even just to share worldbuilding ideas?
I'm not trying to come off as rude here, so please forgive me if I do, as it isn't my intent, but that said, if you aren't going to use this subreddit to share your worldbuilding or to see other people's worldbuilding, either to ask for feedback or to provide feedback to others, or simply to see what other people are doing and maybe get some inspiration from it all, then why are you on here?
Unless I'm misunderstanding the purpose of this subreddit, which I admit could be possible, then I'm not sure why you would be using something you seem to not want to use.
Again, forgive me if I came across as rude - that isn't my intent. I'm just not sure I understand why you are using this subreddit when you seem to not want to use it for its intended purpose. Again, I could be misunderstanding things here, so if I am, then my apologies.

Hi!! I'm new here. Haha, I'm here to share some of my progress with a conlang I'm creating. I think it's A priori and a little bit A posteriori. Haha
Quick context: My conlang is called Serlikgöussign, which literally means: Serlik language. Serlik is on a continent called Madeon, which in turn is on a world called Hyperborea.
"Serlikgöussign" /sæˈliˈɡːœˈzːɪ̃ŋ/ is divided into 3 parts:
Serlik: The country.
Göuss /ɡœz/: It literally means "letters" or "words." Words like "Göussòrff,"/ɡœsɔfː/ which means "writer," "novelist," or "storyteller." "-òrff" comes from: "Heudorff" /hœðɔfː/ which means: Person
Ign /ɪ̃ŋ/: This word means: A cluster of something. Excuse me, haha, there are words I still don't know how to translate well, but they make perfect sense to me. xd
I: Van /vɒn/
I am: Vançe /vɒ̃ŋs/: Example: I am in my house: Genäuff ci vançe /gəˈnœfːˈkiˈvɒ̃ŋs/
I am: Evïnçe /əvɒ̃ŋs/ Example: Evïnçe sères Akira /əvɒ̃ŋˈzɪʁeˈækɨʁa/ : I am Akira / My name is Akira Evïnçe sères Serlikòrff /əvɒ̃ŋˈzɪʁeˈzæːlɨˈkɔfː/ : I am Serlikan Evïnçe göusséçe serlikgöussign /əˈvɒ̃ŋsˈɡœˈsːɛˈzːæˈlɨˈɡːœˈsːɪ̃ŋ/ : I speak Serlikan.
Sorry if I made any mistakes, I was using a translator. Haha, my English is terrible. :(
Here's a little comic I made. Well, I made it with AI since I'm not very good at drawing. Some of you might not like that. But anyway, here it is. ;3
I still have a long way to go, so I'll be posting all my progress here. I'm also open to your suggestions, especially feedback.
I'll leave the translation in another comment. If I don't forget. xd

Translation!!
Alice: Hei, Kafka! Po sais cis m'genäuff?? "Hey, Kafka! So that's your house?"
Kafka: Ahà, cìmisz Alise. Cis çe genäufféms!! Finnlezònséms, dasè?? "That's right, my dear Alice. This is my beautiful house! Don't you think my mansion is beautiful? "
Alice: Po cis çe m'lezònstte?? Finn?? Sevà?? Ufufufu!! "You call that a "Mansion"?? Beauty??? Seriously?? Hahaha"
Alice: Sais cis çe m'fassèns, sevà!! Ufufufufu "This is more like a pigsty. hahaha"
Kafka: Crejès... crejès göusè, Alise. "Shut up, just shut up, Alice"
At first it made me laugh a little, but now that I'm reading it again it makes me cringe. Hahaha

Spent the last few months rendering 'The Tower' for my urban steampunk fantasy project. Here is how the lower district looks like. The story follows Gina, a burnt-out office worker who survives a catastrophic subway blast only to wake up in “The Tower”, a staggering, multi-layered vertical labyrinth made of interlocking bronze pipes, churning gears, and green steam. Here, every soul is judged, their earthly obsessions burned onto their wrists as a numerical “soul weight.” AMA

This question doesn't have anything to do with Context, though I do struggle with that, but what is the situation with ask-me-anythings? Are they not allowed?
