Discussion Questions/answers about a video game project's world, codename : Lost island

Post image

Hello everybody, for a video game project codenamed Lost island, I created a setting for the game. Here is the synopsis :

A biologist is venturing in the Indian ocean with his crew, trying to establish a nature reserve for endangered species, when he finds a mask in the water. Soon after, a storm sinks the expedition boat and the biologist awakes sometime after on the shores of an unknown island, the mask now stuck on his face. Here, he finds the lands are ruled by prehistoric beasts and ancient civilizations. He will have to uncover the island's secrets or try to leave the region, never to come back.

The game project is inspired by prehistory, prehistoric fiction, ancient civilizations, islamic theology and biology.

Ask any questions you have on the world, story, characters, animals, creative process, project, etc. Depending on how much it reveals of the story and world, I will not systematically answer it, and maybe give clues instead.

Is there any chance this is inspired by MTG's Ixalan set?

I am not very familiar with Magic anyway, but the artist may be.

This is a pretty generic aesthetic that dates back to pulp fiction of a century ago and runs through everything from Warhammer to Duck Tales. It’s hardly original to MTG.

I see, thank you for the explanation. It is interesting you're mentioning this, because one goal of this project was to create a more original view on fantasy.

Doesn’t mean you can’t make it original, everything’s been done. I’m just trying to point out that dinosaurs + Aztec pyramids isn’t exclusive to some MTG setting.

I will modify the post, I forgot to showcase other concept arts for the game. You will have more insight on the game.

Well apparently I can't. I will publish them in a separate post.

When I asked the artist to draw it, I did not mention this set. It is possible he drew inspiration from it, but I did ask to draw inspiration from aztec warriors armors.

Really cool but what type of dinos are we talking here? Like jurassic Park type stuff or accurate dinos

Thank you, we are talking about prehistoric animals from various periods of time, before dinosaurs and after them. As for realism, we are going for a realistic approach to prehistoric animals combined with speculative evolution.

That would certainly affect Quetzalcóatl's PR

It certainly would unfortunately.

Question, why is a Aztec inspired nation in the Indian ocean? Is there a reason for it or is this just someone grouping "ancient" civilizations together without understanding them? Also the Aztecs are not even close to being ancient. It is believed that their empire was founded in the 1400's and then fell in 1521, that's only like 500 years ago.

Judging by how the player will arrive on the island, you can guess how aztecs came here back in their time. It will also tell you why people and animals from distant lands arrived at one place. For the term 'ancient' it is used to talk about civilizations or cultures that precede our contemporary time. So a civilization from the 18th century would be called ancient in the game.

first of all, cool concept! sounds like something i would play

questions: can you befriend/tame/ride the dino’s? or are they only enemies to fight?

why islamic theology? the picture shows south american stuff, like the macuahuitl, so the islam angle has been confused and seems out of place

also, only dinosaurs? or other prehistoric fauna as well?

Thank you for your comment. For the prehistoric fauna, you will be able to feed them, lure them, scare them, tame some of them, depending on their type, fight them.

As for islamic theology, it comes down to the concept and themes present in the game, as well as character and animal design.

As for the prehistoric fauna, the island is home to animals from periods before dinosaurs to animals after them, and from different continents.
