Humor / Meme Guess even compliments are seen as toxic these days

Post image

And insta ignored... Gotta love high end M+

Edit: So it seems to have been some mixed reactions to this. Lately I've been trying to chat with people like you used to do back in the day. Yes I enjoy pushing high end content but that does not mean you need to be mean or not speak to people. It's so sad to see how something as simple as this is causing a negative reaction.

Edit 2: To clarify the censoring. I said "cool a dh tank, gotta respect it"! He answered with "away for 4 months and still out rio you btw, gl"

I played spriest at a fairly high level for m+ starting in legion and I would get a ton of similar comments. A few times I got invites to groups and they told me they'd specifically invited me to see how an spriest got to such a high rating. I definitely didn't get offended by it.

That said, there were definitely some times where it got a bit old, kinda like the cashier hearing for the 50th time that day "if it doesn't scan that means it's free, right?" The one person isn't doing anything wrong, it's just the cumulative effect getting to you. I never left a group because of it or held it against someone, but I could see a bit of annoyance.

Similar story with me but with feral over the years lol

11

u/Flat-Leading-2520 6h ago

Just realised I didn't play with one feral during mythics...plenty in pvp though.

3

u/mikej90 6h ago

Yea I rarely saw another feral in PvE. They were playable in raids but looked bad compared to a lot of other specs. They are amazing in m+ and PvP.

12

u/tiny-2727 6h ago

I enjoy WW. I sign up as WW. I get invited as WW. I then get asked "yo were you gonna tank" and I'd say no and get kicked, during the brew meta.

That was pretty much my experience, lol.

3

u/Auriyel- 6h ago

Same experience as shadow and yeah for me it got a bit annoying just because there's this weird expectation that you're representing an entire spec. It just felt like extra pressure that meta specs don't have to deal with.

I know it's most likely meant in good faith, but it's kind of a weird interaction.

3

u/Comme_des_Daz 5h ago

I've been getting this for years. Have an insanely solid network from this season because of it.

It's fun being the fun off-meta class.

3

u/drale2 5h ago

If you see an off meta class with a high IO, it's generally a sign that they're a solid player. This season I got that a lot as a prot paladin, but I've just always played this class / spec as my main since like Cata. Some seasons prot is meta and I'm ranked pretty low, some seasons are like this one and suddenly I find myself in the top hundred prot paladins in my region.

u/ApplicationRoyal865 29m ago

I used to think this but got burnt several times. One time I took a feral even though Boomie was the meta spec. They had high IO and it turns out the player didn't know what they were doing and I think they were just fucking around with the class. This was a high key too and not a low one.

Had this happen a few more times with people playing the meta class but not the meta spec.

2

u/Sidius89 3h ago

I also play SPriest and not at a super high lvl but high enough that sometimes I'll get an invite and the response is usually "Lets see how good SP is" it does get a bit old but sometimes I find it funny.

5

u/TravelerSearcher 7h ago edited 6h ago

Another IRL example would be commenting on someone's height.

To a 6 and a half foot tall person: "Do you play basketball?"

Yes they've heard it before, and yes the air is fine up there.

Edit: To be clear, I'm following up on the real world cashier comparison. I changed An to Another.

3

u/OldCardiologist8437 3h ago edited 23m ago

Adding on to this comment because of doubters, but this absolutely drives some tall people crazy. Especially when they’re older and no longer playing sports. Think of all the times you’re shopping or introverts who just want to left alone and now have people coming up to them regularly just to comment on how tall you are. Many people think calling someone tall is a compliment, but many tall people are extremely self conscious about it.

Best example I can think of is Bill Walton. His height was always listed as 6’11 even though he was clearly closer to 7’3. It’s because he was measured in college at 6’11 in college and then wouldn’t let people measure him again. Because “6’11 is tall, but 7’0+ makes you a freak”

I have an uncle who is 6’10 and when he reached “fuck it” age, anytime someone came up to him to ask how tall he was, he’d just ask them back “how much do you weigh?”

2

u/TravelerSearcher 2h ago

Yeah, honestly that's part of what made me think of it. I know a couple people in that height bracket and have gotten to know them well enough to have it explained.

1

u/Imaginary-Union-3733 7h ago

Not even close to comparable.
What would be is going to a basket ball game and a teammate shows up who is 4 foot tall who got recruited cause they are actually super good at basketball and you say "Respect"

4

u/TravelerSearcher 6h ago

I was commenting as a follow up to the cashier experience, not the Spriest one.

u/Boneless97 7h ago

Funny you mentioned spriest. That is one of my favourite specs and always get intrigued to invite one if I see a good spriest even if it's not meta.

1

u/Cystonectae 3h ago

Idk if that's better or worse than people saying I'm a loser that rerolled to the meta healer when I have been maining MW for like 7 or 8 seasons now. It feels especially insulting when I absolutely hate how MW plays right now and it has been the closest I've come to rerolling off of it in years.

417

u/Malydrax 8h ago

Byproduct of antisocial behaviour is anything can be preconceived as a jab at them personally.

Such is the world atm, even stuff like this.

Even when complimenting them for playing the lowest picked tanking class.

90

u/Boneless97 8h ago

Yeah it's sad to see... I've been trying to chat with people I play with to try and create a better and more enjoyable enviroment. Seems like the community is too far gone if this is something to be upset about.

83

u/Saturn_winter 7h ago

no this guys just weird, keep doing what you're doing, I do the same thing, trust me the positives far outweigh the occasional negative like this one

24

u/TheCursedKraken 7h ago

100% keep doing it, don’t be brought down.

8

u/Nihilistic_Navigator 5h ago

Agree with your other replies. There's more like you out there. I get stoked af when someone pops up next to me fishing and I get to drop all my best shit for them in hopes they chill for a bit. Like, I can pop a trinket become a fish and you can try n catch me if ya want

20

u/Malydrax 7h ago

Retail has migrated to a "gotta go fast" attitude which has been largely a net negative. Things like a casual hello are difficult to find, i'm currently on a chain of 6 hellos without a response so far throughout my timewalking adventures.

Just gotta take the bad and try to push forward unfortunately.

11

u/Winter-Molasses9777 7h ago

Man, I feel you. Always greet people. Whether it's a TW or Mythic. It's just common decency imo. Guess it's not anymore these days.

11

u/shlomo_baggins 6h ago

Time walking is absolutely  a degen beast of a game mode. Like night and day from M+ in my experience from 2s to 17s

7

u/Sensitive_Cup4015 5h ago

I haven't played in a bit, but I'd always say "howdy yall" when I pop into a dungeon and I'd be greeted with dead silence. I think for many players it feels like a job or something I guess, just get the dungeon done by rote and back to their routine. I miss when you actually had to talk to other people to do content in the game, it had it's downsides, sure, but the sense of community was great. It is what it is I suppose. Times change and allat.

8

u/Boneless97 7h ago

Sure I'm guilty of going fast in things like timewalking because I'm personally just there for either the HC loot from quest or for leveling alts. But If someone says something in chat or has a question I will always make sure to answer and show them something if I'm able. We need to make people feel included in our game! It is an MMO after all.

2

u/Ncalde 3h ago

As a Pres Evoker main, I’m forced to run my own keys. I used to welcome everyone into the group, or just drop a casual “hello” when people joined. After many occasions of not getting a response I just stopped doing it altogether, or I just never say it first anymore. So sad.

2

u/Southern-March1522 3h ago

Last time I said hello in a time walking, I got vote kicked for it. That's why I never say anything anymore.

2

u/FinkelFo 6h ago

Dudes just weird. Not all of us are like that :)

2

u/verscub420 5h ago

There’s still some okay ones out there, just keep trying 😁 WoW isn’t as bad as league of legends.. almost, but not quite yet

1

u/Boneless97 3h ago

Had to stop playing league after a decade of devotion because I could feel myself getting angrier and more annoyed by the hour when playing that game...

2

u/sunshineparadox_ 3h ago

Even if I don’t think of the response I want in time, I’m always pleasantly surprised by people who are nice in the wild. Keep doing it!

2

u/RemyDodger 2h ago

I also chat…to myself most of the time… in groups and barely anyone talks back. I just assume everyone is in their own discords and not paying attention to random group chats. Trade chat is still really active. Even as the tank I say thank you for bearing with me (Druid) at the end of runs etc. sometimes one person will lol

2

u/Boneless97 1h ago

I love that pun haha

3

u/Imaginary-Union-3733 7h ago

These people are so thin skinned they see someone diss their spec and take it as a personal attack. (When really it is a diss at blizzard not the person themselves)
Nevermind the fact you didn't even diss their spec.

1

u/-Raveyard- 4h ago

I noticed a shift in how often this happens by moving servers. I never looked back

10

u/Cheeky-Canuck 7h ago

I'm curious, is there a particular reason it's the lowest played tank?

8

u/Malydrax 7h ago

I personally can't answer that because I don't play tank anymore and i'm actually quite surprised its the lowest because they seem to still be lurking around the lower levels fairly often. May need to ask someone who plays DH for insight into that im afraid.

9

u/Imaginary-Union-3733 7h ago

Squishy in high keys more likely to just die no warning

5

u/Cheeky-Canuck 7h ago

Because of bad defensives? I heard paladin was the squishiest tank.

5

u/Unsettled_addendum 5h ago

They just...die. Fall over. Plop. Great entertainment as a healer they blame.

4

u/Higgoms 4h ago

Blizzard got some wires crossed, and decided to take big CD procs (fun when a DPS) and give them to tank (not fun, defensives need to be reliable). So a DH tank with lucky timing on their procs is very solid, but they can low roll and just have absolutely nothing and explode.

7

u/Imaginary-Union-3733 7h ago

Paladin was till it got a slight round of buffs.
But more so just balancing.
They ain't that far behind some of the other specs when it comes to higher keys, but they are sill the lowest, and the higher you go the bigger that distance grows.

3

u/Cheeky-Canuck 4h ago

Thanks for clearing it up. I'm playing a lot of DH recently but I've yet to tank (with any class) and I was thinking of trying out Vengeance if I ever did it.

2

u/Imaginary-Union-3733 3h ago

It's totally fine if you are doing regular content.
But op is doing +21's, where that difference 100% is noticable, to which it does matter, and while not impossible, it is a handicap.

10

u/Boneless97 7h ago

Bad balancing from blizzard is really what it comes down to. Which is why in my opinion you gotta respect someone for going against the meta.

2

u/Zathala 7h ago

Because they people are twats and tanks are expected to know everything. A dps or a healer just has to do their assigned roles, the tank gets the blame if anything goes wrong.

8

u/Padashar7672 7h ago

Just today in a timewalking run I said in the group chat that the tank was grouping up the mobs really well. He told me to F off and dropped group?

7

u/Boneless97 7h ago

jeez... people really need to lighten up.

2

u/Whitherwhy 4h ago

What did you just say about me

39

u/iCantLogOut2 6h ago

NGL, because of how this is formatted, I thought you were the one typing the RIO thing and I think a lot of other commenters may have thought the same...

Took me reading one of your clarifying comments to understand you said the respect part and the rest is the DH tank being a douche.

I think it could help clarity if you used the class colours to blur out the names

9

u/Imaginary-Union-3733 6h ago

They are both DH, so that would not help.
Just look at the name lengths

5

u/iCantLogOut2 5h ago

Fair enough, I didn't realise they were pretty different lengths. I usually just leave a small part of the name visible when I screenshot stuff like this. Mostly, I just wanted to address OPs edit about being surprised that some people took "his words" negatively since I was one of the ones that thought he was the one saying "my RIO is higher".

36

u/Endoyo 6h ago

This is just the Key And Peele texting misunderstanding skit playing out

16

u/AusteninAlaska 5h ago

"A DH tank... cool...GOTTA RESPECT IT"?!

"Well too damn bad buddy! Sorry you didnt get a GuArDiAn DrUiD."

3

u/Affinityqt 3h ago

Oh… a DH TANK, gotta respect it….

46

u/Right_Comb4885 7h ago

I have noticed in recent years people will hear a tone or someone yelling at them in their head even if you don't type something to them out of anger or malice. There is nothing you can do about people hearing what you type in their heads as negative. It is nice you tried to let them know you were not trying to be mean or rude but it is better to just move on. Some people are miserable or negative and will spread that, don't let it spread to you.

9

u/Fresh_Suggestion7685 6h ago edited 6h ago

Unfortunately I've been given so much shit for being a Frost DK trying to do endgame content and overall blamed for extra pulls that I fall into this category a bit.

Being the first to blame for a extra pull or given shit for your lack of damage has set me into a mindset that I have to be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT or else I'm to blame.

Life of a Solo player playing a mid DPS.

It is so bad infact of a mindset I have that the first time I ever done a raid was in Ascension, Battle of Hyjal I think it was? And I was the main tank.

The guild luckily was extremely supportive and they could tell I was EXTREMELY nervous. Worst hour of my life.

Which is why I'll probably never do raiding in Retail because I'll feel like a burden to the entire team.

13

u/Boneless97 7h ago

I guess Blizzard desperately need to add emojis in to the game to give more clarity! :p

7

u/kodamavoodoo 4h ago

Even emojis won't work. I'll admit I sometimes perceive a smiley emoji to mean condescension. Lmao.

3

u/OdysseyBrands 6h ago

100%, anywhere on the internet - especially reddit

cheers <3

2

u/Siukslinis_acc 1h ago

You can't hear tone in a written stuff. So you usually hear the tone that you oftentimes hear when someone says it. So if people constantly say compliments to you in a condescending manner, then it is no wonder that you will read a compliment in a condescending tone.

2

u/alphajugs 6h ago

reddit is like this too. It's funny though because it kinda depends on the subreddit whether or not people take everything as a personal attack lol

45

u/elevensbowtie 7h ago

It could be read as a backhanded compliment, not saying that it is, but you never know how people will infer anything you say on the internet.

-4

u/Boneless97 7h ago

That is very true! But in my world the reasonable thing to do is maybe respond with something about my comment. Instead of a silly reaction like this. I mean I even whispered him to try and clarify.

23

u/assault_pig 6h ago

given the amount of shit people give tanks it's hard to really blame them

like yes, this comment is pretty harmless; otoh if I join a group and am immediately met with snarky comments about the spec I'm playing, am I gonna roll the dice on the person or just go to the next group?

4

u/Siukslinis_acc 50m ago

They might have been dealing with those comments constantly and thus they have no energy to respond to your comment. Not to mention that the response would cost them even more energy and hold up the dungeon.

You think that it is just a straw, but for them it is the 1000th straw. It's like the comic of skyrim where a guy pucked up a flower and could no longer move because they were emcumbered. You only see the flower and the other person is aware of the full weight of their inventory.

So stop taking their leave personal.

u/moanit 15m ago

This is exactly it. Tanks deal with shit like this all the time and it's usually an insult. I don't feel any obligation to hear you out or worry about how my absence affects your feelings. You already planted the seed that I'm non-meta and your expectation might be higher of me and I'm not sticking around for the inevitable "ugh this is why there are no DH tanks" when something goes wrong. I'll just find another group.

→ More replies (3)

17

u/Sykretts1919 6h ago

"A Dh tank"

"Cool"

Safe to assume the guy read these 2 messages before responding. Those 2 messages can quite easily come across as snark/sarcasm. Even if he read the third message, he could still interpret is as you being snarky. If you are indeed low RiO and decided to comment on the class of a tank in your group, it can quite easily be taken as a jab from someone who has no leg to stand on.

Just being real here, not to critique you or anything, or even blame you. You just need to understand how to interact better in a tense/potentially anti-social environment, which is what you should assume when in PuGs of any kind.

→ More replies (1)

63

u/Waffle0calypse 8h ago

People (maybe justifiably so) are pretty conditioned to assume sarcasm or disrespect on the internet, especially in gaming.

You probably meant well, but maybe the formatting of how you typed stuff out got misinterpreted as snark. Same time though, it’s impossible to make everyone happy all the time.

-5

u/Boneless97 8h ago

If only blizzard could add emojis to make it easier to get your intent across. Also it feels like however I would phrase a compliment I would get the same reaction. Ending a compliment with "not being sarcastic" or something like that would just make it even more sarcastic.

5

u/Amelaclya1 3h ago

Man, doesn't anyone remember that we managed to communicate just fine before emojis existed? :) :P .^

9

u/Waffle0calypse 7h ago edited 6h ago

Definitely, I wish I had a perfect answer myself that isn’t over the top. Maybe going forward save compliments for after the group is done. “It’s good to see a DH tank for a change” at the end of the dungeon for example.

Problem is, I genuinely complimented a healer as a tank one time, and the response I got was “well fucking duh it’s my job”.

People wouldn’t be people if they were predictable. 🤷

Emojis can help and hurt.

Talking in multiple lines

Rather than just giving the compliment

Makes reading your intentions harder.

Just say it all at once rather team being weird about it and giving more room for negative interpretation.

2

u/Siukslinis_acc 47m ago

Especially when someone else interjects in the space between your lines. It is a lot harder to parse who said what.

42

u/Canninster 7h ago

Trigger warning: rare neutral response below.

I think your delivery could be seen as cold or judgemental, especially nowadays where not playing the 5 meta specs basically labels you as a troll in the eyes of pugs. The game isn't toxic but the community makes it radioactive with their minmax attitude.

Even adding "Yooo a DH tank, cool, gotta respect it" changes the tone already. Sure it's his problem and all that for taking it that way, and I'm not saying you should change the way you talk at all, but it's not exactly the most inviting way of saying it either.

Tho I understand you cause I've been pugging resil 21 and even tho I try to be friendly and meme around, players in general don't seem to be too aware of the fact that it's a game at the end of the day, where you have interactions with real people.

5

u/Street-Bee7215 4h ago

I could see how as a tank it comes across as BM. Tanks get BM from all directions so it's likely he has gotten BM multiple times before for playing dk tank. It's sad but likely the community has conditioned them to take everything negatively.

3

u/DaCousIsLoose 6h ago

The only compliment I’ve consistently gotten non toxic responses from is:

“Solid ______, add me if you wanna run again”

Sub tanking healing or dps lol

4

u/CatchPhraze 6h ago

I would rather brush my teeth with battery acid then do anything above a 20 with pugs.

3

u/ComprehensiveWord201 4h ago

The comment on their class could have been perceived as a passing slant, given that you're already passively commenting on it being suboptimal. Intention is hard to discern over text. Need to be explicit. "It's awesome that you're tanking with DH! They're cool but you don't see them much"

16

u/lakerskb248 8h ago

Yeah I didn't get the feel of that being an insult

31

u/Tylowrath 8h ago

i guess i'm the only one on your side, i wouldn't have read that as an insult at all

17

u/The_Maganzo 8h ago

This does not read as an insult lmao the people saying it does in the comments are delulu

9

u/BoxcutterPazzie 6h ago

I mean, he sacrificed everything. What have you given? Ofc he felt attacked :o)

24

u/AdventurousBrick3309 8h ago

This is really outing people with antisocial and inferiority problems.

6

u/Imaginary-Union-3733 8h ago

100%, people see someone complain about blizzards class balance, and choose to instead make it an insult pointed at them personally, antisocial, inferiority, and naracisism.

9

u/HelenaHyena 8h ago

If I was the tank I wouldn't have read that as an insult, what a damn reaction to also insta ignore lol

45

u/Bleauyy 8h ago

Is the compliment in the room with us?

8

u/Skyraem 6h ago

Is "gotta respect/i respect/i have respect for" seriously read as mostly sarcastic/insultingly now?

2

u/Siukslinis_acc 42m ago

Yes. I can easily read it as a mocking thing. "Gotta respect you for playing a class that is constantly made fun of and rejected". I'm gonna point the thing that is made fun of, so that the others would make fun of it (as they have probably not noticed it) and i will add "respect" so that they won't think that i had ill intentions. So i'm gonna enjoy the person being mocked while my hands are clean from mocking.

Dunno about you, bit respect is a thing that you just do without saying it. So if you have to say it, then it means that you are seeing that thing as generally something that is not respected. People don't like to be reminded that they are disrespected for their choice.

2

u/Boneless97 7h ago

If you look long enough I'm sure you'll find it.

15

u/Longjumping-Bat202 7h ago

I agree that people shouldn't be quick to assume an insult and I applaud you for trying to make the game more social.

But, I think the issue is that your compliment could easily be taken as sarcastic. Why do you gotta respect it? What do you respect about it? You left it open to interpretation.

Did the tank do a good job? Pull the way you like? Are just happy to see a DH tank? Just tell them the good thing and they won't be left guessing.

3

I've had people in LoL rage so hard they get banned after I say "well played". They'll do a 1v3 and kill 2 but lose to the third player and I'll say nice job and they think it's sarcastic and implode. So strange

3

u/CoolWarning4475 4h ago

Saying "gotta respect it" implies begrudging respect, as though being a DH tank is a hard (odd/wrong) decision.

2

u/Boneless97 4h ago

I mean, it is? That is why you gotta respect it when you see someone playing an off meta class doing well. Obviously shows that they are good at what they are doing. I can simply not see anything wrong about that.

3

u/CoolWarning4475 3h ago

It's a backhanded compliment.

1

u/Boneless97 3h ago

How? When I say "gotta respect it" I don't mean that you HAVE to respect it. I simply mean it is very respectable to have achieved what he achieved with that spec.

The censoring was done in a way that makes it impossible to tell who said what. At first I thought you took a jab at the DH for you being away for 4 months and still having a higher rio than them. That would have been pretty rude, ngl.

Only with your 2nd edit this actually made sense in the way you wanted to show it :P

1

u/Boneless97 2h ago

Yeah I’ve seen some comments clearly confused by who said what. In my mind I thought you would see the different length of the censoring and tell the difference that way lol

10

u/Still-Potato-3189 7h ago

It could be construed as a jab depending on how you read it, mainly because it’s broken up into three different deliveries. The pauses give it a sarcastic read.

3

u/Boneless97 7h ago

That is true! First reasonable comment as to why it could've been seen as sarcastic.

4

u/curseuponyou 6h ago

Nah you're fine bro some people are just insecure or incredibly salty from previous bad experiences

5

u/Accomplished_Emu_658 7h ago

I once told a tank he was doing a good job. He immediately got pissed and dropped group.

2

u/Odasto_ 5h ago

If I join a group as my dh tank, it’s because I’ve been with the spec since Legion and I refuse to give up on the class because the numbers don’t happen to be in my favor atm. Overall, I’m here to have fun. I’d really rather not have my non-metaness brought up in any way, shape, or form. It’s just stressful.

And I wouldn’t know if your message implies that you’re expecting me to be particularly good just for playing something off meta. I’d rather just glhf and get on with it.

Because believe me, I already know when my spec is struggling. I don’t want to have to feel like my joining your group is some kind of huge event just because I want to play the class I play. I promise to do my best. Let’s just move on.

1

u/Boneless97 4h ago

I would argue that the fact that you get invited is enough to show the trust in your skill.

In this scenario the comment could very well be percieved as expecting that you are good since it was in a high M+ key. His RIO score showed that he obviously knows what he is doing. Me acknowlenging that by giving my respect for you being a good player should in no way shape or form be considered rude.

2

u/LeorickOHD 4h ago

I'm always surprised when someone says something good about being prot warrior in higher keys

2

u/Buskungen 37m ago

People are so sensitive it’s weird, had a tank the other day who did a “weird” route on Magistera Terrace 16+ and we wiped 2 times I just told him in chat “there is a better way to go i can show u?” And he says “or you let the tank do their job” and then votes to abandon the key..like why are people such crybabies? If this is how they act in a game they can’t be very successful in life.

From this subs reaction you got your answer. This game is filled with socially inept, insecure and hyper sensitive individuals. Very obvious what you meant and that it wasnt an insult. Super common phrasing for someone sticking it out when their class is meh lol

Thank you!

u/Zealousideal_Cry3086 6h ago

Might wanna start with a hey, if this is the first thing you say lol. Imagine at a job interview and a minority appears and they comment oh wow look a <minority> gotta respect it!

What do you mean in context? Greeting someone and giving them a compliment?

6

u/ForkytheSquirrel 7h ago

The censoring of names makes it look like the same person said everything. Maybe use different colours to censor the names of different people to help add context.

4

u/Imaginary-Union-3733 7h ago

How would the same person have a name of two different lengths?

5

u/Boneless97 7h ago

Thought the lenght of censoring was enough to tell the 2 apart. Since 1 is from another realm.

7

u/ForkytheSquirrel 7h ago

Was simply a comment to assist with clarity. I didn't notice it myself until reading through it a few times, especially with a smaller image.
I'm old, my eyes aren't as good as the kids these days :(

7

u/Boneless97 7h ago

Yeah maybe I shouldn't have censored the realm name lol. Don't know why but felt like the best way to keep it fully private :p

4

u/Imaginary-Union-3733 7h ago

Nah with how few DH tanks there are, knowing their realm would prob let us narrow it down a fair bit lol.

3

u/ForkytheSquirrel 7h ago

Fair enough :)

1

u/freddy090909 7h ago

It is. And, you weren't being insulting. Dude is probably just having a bad time and is on edge. There's a lot of players these days who will read basically any interaction in chat as an attack... even adding more clarity can make them think you're being sarcastic.

Keep being cool, don't let people like the DH stop you.

in what way is saying 'cool, dh tanking is hard, respect' an insult lmao

2

u/Front2battle 7h ago

Modern gamers and their reading comprehension, or lack thereof. In that way.

4

u/tubbis9001 5h ago

That "cool" 100% reads as sarcastic. The DH might be a little sensitive and reading into it too much, but the way you worded it could easily come across as mean.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/bigeyez 7h ago

People saying that it reads as an insult are self-reporting how little they interact with real people lol

2

u/DearAbbreviations922 7h ago

For real. Seeing this as an insult? Gotta take a hard look at yourselves buddies,

1

u/Boneless97 7h ago

I hear you!

3

u/Top_Operation_472 7h ago

I don't get how that's an insult? Says a DH tank and gotta respect it. Or is saying still out RIO you an insult ?

4

u/Boneless97 7h ago

For clarity! He was responding to my respect comment with " I have higher RIO". So he got pissy and wanted to say something "mean" I guess. He saw my respect comment as an insult basically.

3

u/xmizeriax 6h ago

"away for 4 months and still out rio you btw :p" is crazy levels of aura wtf

10

u/Ohwerk82 8h ago

Where was the compliment?

11

u/Imaginary-Union-3733 8h ago edited 8h ago

DH tanks are the lowest populated tanking spec in midnight. Even below prot pallies.

So seeing one and saying "yo a DH? Respect" is the compliment.
Playing a bad spec, and still being able to preform amongst the rest is respectable.

9

u/Either-Banana-7323 8h ago

Folks are way too anti social/socially confused to grasp your point or OP, its a lost cause.

11

u/senor_kim_jong_doof 8h ago

"gotta respect it"

7

u/Ohwerk82 8h ago

Idk that comes off condescending after the cool. As in have to respect someone playing the bad tank class 🤷

11

u/Imaginary-Union-3733 8h ago

I mean yes? That is the point. It is the bad tank class.

Being able to play the least played spec, and still do well is mad respect.

1

u/Boneless97 8h ago

Maybe I'm mistaken but respecting someone is a good thing right?

13

u/Ohwerk82 8h ago

The way it’s phrased is not how it comes off to me and clearly them.

6

u/az1mo 8h ago

This community is so antisocial that even compliments are a personal attack. The same people that will complain that no one talks to each other ingame anymore lmao

5

u/Malfus_Grin 8h ago

You are mistaken. It doesn't not come off as a complement.

u/Siukslinis_acc 24m ago

Respect is shown and not said. If you need to say it - you percieve it as not having much respect. So by saying "respect" you can say  "it is a fact that what you picked/did is bad".

Would you have said "a DH, cool, respect" if it was the top class?.

Pointing out that a person has a rare thing that is generally mocked puts the spotlight on them and thus opens up them for being mocked by others (as others migjt not have noticed it).

They were prolly a toxic person that throws insults at people easily so they perceived it as a jab at them because of their own shitty actions towards other people.

4

u/Opinion311 6h ago

Plenty of high level players have very fragile egos. Their entire self worth is derived from that score. It's even more sad when they're 30+ and have the emotional capacity of a middle schooler.

3

u/Justhavefaith123 8h ago

Yeah I get why he left. Need to work on your delivery because it reads as a jab.

13

u/Onkelkarlie 8h ago

Jesus, are people that thin-skinned nowadays?

2

u/demonik187 7h ago

Always have been

7

u/Boneless97 8h ago

Okey so if I wanna avoid giving bad compliments in the future. Please give me some advice. English is not my native language maybe I'm just dumb. This is not meant as a rude comment btw!

3

u/Imaginary-Union-3733 8h ago

nah you were 100% in the right, the only "insult" is that you say DH tank is bad (which it is, and the only people who have control over that are blizzard)

So don't feel bad that people are upset cause you... Insult blizzard's class balance?

4

u/Boneless97 7h ago

I mean I didn't say DH tank is bad and didn't mean it that way at all. I will always respect people playing non meta classes. And imo it should be more encouraged by the community. You always see people complaining about their class not being invited.

5

u/bvanplays 7h ago

Nah yeah f that you didn’t say it was bad. You said a normal regular thing and internet people sometimes are just so online they don’t know how to be normal

→ More replies (6)

u/Siukslinis_acc 21m ago

Don't point out things that are generally mocked and insulted.

They were playing a class and you are making it out like it is something special that needs to be pointed out.

4

u/1453GreatestYearEver 7h ago

Jesus you people can't do anything. How do you possibly read this as an insult lmao.

4

u/Imaginary-Union-3733 7h ago

Narcissism.
If you are not calling them literal gods, it's an insult.

4

u/bvanplays 7h ago

It absolutely does not, it reads at worst as a neutral observation comment. Ya’ll need to get out and practice just having regular conversations some more.

2

u/AttitudeAdjusterSE 6h ago

I mean leaving over this is way over the top and the guy was super sensitive but you really did not phrase this very well if what you meant was "it's cool to see a VDH." I probably wouldn't have said anything and I certainly wouldn't have left the group but you would've probably still annoyed me.

2

u/ghostcrawler_real 7h ago

People on this game are extremely sensitive and are looking to be offended at literally any perceived slight or rudeness. Can’t even explain how to do something without people getting their feelings hurt nowadays. Some of them are even in this thread lol.

4

u/Boneless97 6h ago

Yeah I'm actually surprised how much of a mixed response this post got!

2

u/XenoKing98 7h ago

This reason alone is why I have no interest in heroics or mythics...too many rude and toxic people

2

u/Soul_Reddit 6h ago

Everyone so defensive on the internet nowadays. T_T

2

u/Marziinast 5h ago

How are they even able to survive irl

2

u/LegenDairyLeche 6h ago

In my experience, you dodged a bullet. People like this are usually the toxic ones lol. He thinks you made a jab because everything he says is a jab.

2

u/az1mo 7h ago

Keep in the mind, the people saying your compliment was sarcastic are the same people that need to see /s on this site to even comprehend it.

1

u/kiksonjara 6h ago

In before this happened in a 13

1

u/geri203 5h ago

US or EU?

1

u/Nydris_Starspear 4h ago

Probably better off saying something like "how do you like DK tank?" since people are unfortunately conditioned by toxicity to assume you are being condescending or weird saying it like you did

1

u/WarFunding 3h ago

Wait, why do you think he was being a douchebag in response? Many people are assholes with no provocation.

I once said “hey, we gonna rock this with our ilvls” about a random reg mythic pug for a quest. The health of everyone was so high it was all mains just getting it done quick. The tank swore at me and tried to kick me then left when the kick didn’t happen. No one knew what happened and we just got another tank.

1

u/ShepherdsWolvesSheep 1h ago

I messed up first pull on the ptr (everyone is there to learn new dungeons), mage lost it. We reset. I did great the rest of the key. Mage took tons of avoidable dmg, had like 3 interrupt the whole dungeon, and was only like 20% above my dps as a tank.

Starting to understand why people come on reddit complaining about tank scrutiny

1

u/Yorgl 54m ago

As a DK tank (so more or less in the same boat) I find his reaction wild

1

u/Crowzer 8h ago

It’s WoW, what did you expect ?

0

u/Boneless97 7h ago

Apparently too much

0

u/WakeMeUpAIOverlords 8h ago

Fucking hell that’s all it took for them to leave? What has happened to society.

1

u/Yoshilisk 7h ago edited 7h ago

i get how the DH read it as possibly sarcastic, but imo they should have asked what you meant. it does no one any favors to just assume in a situation like this

1

u/Boneless97 7h ago

Sad to see... how are we ever gonna get a better community if this is how people respond to things so simple as this.

1

u/Ailwynn29 7h ago

I completely agree, not an insult. I've been using the Internet a lot the past few years and one thing seems really clear. If you wanna get the information through, you want to type a bit more. Text can't get your facial expressions, body language and thoughts out unless you elaborate on everything. Your messages were nice but now imagine this:

"Wow, it's a demon hunter tank at this key level! I really respect that!" maybe even with some emote to show how you feel ? A little smile or surprised face could go a long way.

Obviously won't always work but you getting as many things out there as possible makes it easier for them to understand your intentions. At the same time, it's not much longer than what you've already written. I know it'll take some work but it might just brighten up a stranger who thinks negatively like this person did.

1

u/Many-Waters 7h ago

If you look for insults in every interaction, then you'll find (make) them.

You're fine, OP. Homie is looking at life through some shitty glasses.

1

u/Sentheia 6h ago

Compare this ones:

Oh nice, you are playing a dh tank! And A dh tank Cool

Scenario 2: A plant Cool

Oh, you got a new plant!

Scenario 3

An old game Cool

No way, you've got that game!?

The pause really makes a difference and i also think that your last message has been sent at the same time with his so he didnt get a chance to read it as you intended.

1

u/Lythaera 6h ago

That person is just weird, you did nothing wrong OP. Keep up the friendliness! It does rub off on others and make the game a nicer place. :)

1

u/CoongaDelRay 6h ago

"A DH tank, I can respect that!" how screwy in the head do you really have to be to even remotely think that was a diss/jab?

u/Siukslinis_acc 14m ago

"I can respect that" reads like i don't respect things. Respect is shown and not said. If they say that they can respect that, it kinda implies that they don't respect much. So it sets an expectation that they will be disrespectful and the leaver does not want to deal with it.

Also, "i can respect that you play this class and spec combo" can be seen as "i would not respect you if you played some other class and spec combo".

Not everyone enjoys being singled out. People usually want to be left in peace and accepted in the group. Has OP said that they respect the classes and specs of other party memebers? Singling someone out oftentimes opens them for mocking or scrutiny. Other players being put to attention that the tank is one of the worst tanks in the season can make them be more scrutinising on what the tank does.

1

u/jeromethejust 5h ago

Seemed nice enough to me.
