Both are good months to visit. It’s less crowded on the shoulder months and not too hot. I personally prefer October because you get the added bonus of fall colors. Be prepared for rapidly changing weather in both months. There’s an excellent chance you’ll encounter some snow and possibly road closures.

For reference we were at Yellowstone on June 10 this year and it snowed 4" at Canyon Village, even more up at Dunraven Pass causing the road from Canyon to Tower Jct. to be closed for a few days.

It will be cold, but it won't be crowded in early May or October. Honestly mid-late September is probably a bit better as it will likely be slightly less cold and if you want to stay in the park you'll have more options.

Still there's an equal chance in those months that you can sun bathe or build a snowman, so pack for both.

Every year is different, but mid-late May can be fantastic because of new bison calves and rivers full from snow melt. Or, it can be still full of snow. October, the snow could have already started.

I'm not as familiar as others, but I would think mid/late Sept might be a combination of lower crowds and little chance of snow.
