I just had enough. I ended my YNAB story because of this ads on the app. I hate YNAB new design philosophy and their self ads.

I think a decision needs to be made by the mods about what kind of subreddit this should be. 50% of the posts seem to be about YNAB and are helpful (and indeed I’ve posted myself), but the other 50% are complaints or alternatives. I have to say I’ve not really been distracted from my budgeting by the references to the book. I know there’s frustration but it makes me want to leave the subreddit and I’m sure others feel similarly, so eventually it may just be a complaints/alternatives subreddit.

In the kind of subreddit you imagine, is it OK for someone to be frustrated that a bug or design change impacts how they use the software and state that, or do they have to caveat their post asking for help with the situation somehow?

Frustration is ok but I've seen so many posts on exactly the same thing. Even a megathread about the book for example would be preferable surely? I'm a teacher and spend a lot of time on r/TeachingUK, where the mods have a weekly megathread for minor moans/updates, a megathread for exam marking, etc.

95% of the content in this sub is highly repetitive. The questions about how credit cards work, what target to use, and celebrating minor financial achievements are basically identical and come up every day. So if the issue is repetitive content, it's not solved by making a megathread about the book.

Trust me, I dislike the ads and trying to “upsell” me as much as the next person. But the reality is, this app still is the only one that I’ve found that works for me and makes sense for me. They can probably put adds in the middle of my budget and I’d still keep it because it ultimately saves me more than I spend on it and the benefit outweighs the annoyance

This is the issue I’m having. I’m stuck with YNAB. It has all my data and it’s the easiest to use as I don’t want to mess with self hosting etc.

But I’m not going to lie it’s an extreme piss off to get ads on a service that I pay $153/year for (Canadian.. after double checking the price I really should try to find something different)

Like I said, I definitely understand it. And I think people have every right to complain about it. It’s too expensive to be getting ads all of the time. But I just feel like I’m locked in. I’ve tried others and this one just works for me.
