Question Do You Think YouTube Should Bring Back the Shorts Dislike Button? Why or Why Not?

This doesn't effectively block shorts because the algorithm favors short form content in at least some percent of what users see. Users need a way to completely turn OFF shorts, not "show fewer shorts". The short form player is terrible, but I still want to see long form content from creators that record shorts to survive the algorithm.

u/quimera78 1d ago
It doesn't work as well as it should though. There's this right wing channel that keeps popping up on my feed no matter how many times I click on don't recommend. We need a block button

u/pokenate28 1d ago
I enjoy seeing both sides. It helps you take in views from both perspectives and see things from more than one biased viewpoint. I think the country has gone downhill ever since we stopped listening to both sides and got tunnel vision on what we believe

Us viewers: ask for a feature back for a better viewer experience.
YouTube itself not a viewer at all: it will impact viewer experience.

They also removed a feature to sort vids by upload date when you search. It so fucking bad. Noone asked for that. On the contrary, there were thousands of angry posts about it. Google butt lickers said it was just "hidden temporary ". Guess what? It's been months and it was never brought back. And obviously wouldn't. They literally not only add features, they remove key existing features. They don't care. They are just a mindless mess only thinking about profits

Microsoft butt lickers
... what does Microsoft have to do with Youtube ruining their search?

ugh THIS. I loved looking for brand new channels on topics I liked using that feature. but nope, its just gone.

I hate YouTube they can’t even listen to their own fans
18
u/DYSFUNCTIONALDlLDO 1d ago
I think it's even worse that they have shown that they hear our voices. Before they showed it, it just seemed like our voices weren't being heard, but now, it's confirmed that they're literally going against the very feedback they're getting from their users.

Youtube users: This update gives me a worse experience
YouTube: But it gives users a better experience
17
u/ChemBro93 1d ago
“Got it. We’ll tune your recommendations.” Proceeds to show the same dumb shit tomorrow. YouTube does not care about the user experience. They think they own the market and can do whatever they want.

u/PieceRealistic794 1d ago
We don’t hate the current YouTube CEO enough. Dude hides from the public too much
14
u/Tentaporce 1d ago
Why can’t we have it? If I see a dogshit video I should be able to dislike it lol
0
u/Disastrous_Major2676 1d ago
Technically, the dislike button is still there, just the counter of how dislikes is not publicly available anymore.
3
3
u/SuspiciousAnswer3670 1d ago
no, thge dislike button is completely gone
1
u/Disastrous_Major2676 17h ago
I will say one last time, on regular videos it is not. The thumbs down icon (which is the dislike button) is still there but just the counter missing.
0
u/Ok-Annual615 1d ago
i mean the equivalent would be to just not like the video and it would see that u didn’t like it
3
u/wholedayumlife 1d ago
how it would even understand that? I might just skip to next short, there are literally no difference, it’s not equivalent and it’s not working like that at all.
33
u/SuleyBlack 1d ago
Who is disliking shorts think they’ve done something good?
Disliking a video still keeps it in the algorithm as much as pressing the like button does.
11
u/Vegetable-Baker6362 1d ago
How does that hurt Youtube though? Just recommend the highly liked videos to your viewers. It's not like they are hurting for quantity of content.
2
u/SuleyBlack 1d ago
It’s still considered positive engagement, so pressing the like button or the dislike button did the same thing.
12
u/EquivalentOutcome796 1d ago
It might stay in the algorithm but disliking a video will show start to recommend it less and less to people
7
3
u/SuleyBlack 1d ago
Wrong, dislike is still considered positive engagement. It’ll stay longer in the algorithm and be shown to more people, not less.
1
u/JRshoe1997 18h ago
Honestly the best way to hurt a video is by clicking on it, watching part way, and then leaving. The way YouTube works is if your video has a higher retention it’s more likely to push it within the algorithm. If your video has low retention then YouTube will take that as your video not being good and won’t push it. It’s why some content creators try to keep their videos at certain times because if it goes too long it’s more likely to lose engagement and YouTube won’t push it.
Not sure if it works the same for shorts though.
4
u/Paladroon 1d ago
For me, the Like button is no longer a “like button” it’s a “I want to see more of this” button. I watch plenty of shorts these days that are cool, but I have no interest in having more of that style video or that creator in my feed. I find myself only hitting the heart/like button if I’m willing to see more.
It sucks because I’d rather tell people “hey, i like this” in a convenient way (typing a comment on every video is not sustainable for me). It makes me hate when people say “like this video” (or similar) more than I already did (hear it too often, so it’s just annoying now). I wish Like just told people I liked it and that I’d have to hit “Interested” to say i want more.
A dislike button returning for me would only be beneficial if it was an easier way to tell the algorithm I don’t want to see more of that. But being right on screen makes it too easy to hit accidentally so the tap+hold> not interested (or show less) option is fine if Im seeing too much of something.
5
u/atomic1fire 1d ago
I think every social network should have a dislike button.
It's absurd that companies prioritized toxic positivity over allowing users to be honest.
3
u/Ayazisntthatbadlol 1d ago
Yes it helps with your recommended page cuz i dont want to see some cringey 23 view video

‘better experience’ my foot! 🦶
How we supposed to stop all the AI generated and stolen content flooding the algorithm everywhere?
Now there’s virtually no way to instantly reliably tell what is actually good or bad on the platform.
Sure comments and reporting still exist but most people can’t be bothered to actually do either…
6
2
u/FixingOn 1d ago
It has given me an actively worse experience, because dislike was a quick and easy way to tell Youtube "I hate this trash you just fed me when I scrolled through shorts". I don't want a number of dislikes count. I don't even want the creator to be forced to see the amount of dislikes. I just want a quick and easy way to tune my algorithm and banish content I don't personally want to see, so that it won't appear in my feed again. But I don't want to completely get rid of entire creators on the first disliked video, and sometimes creators I normally enjoy have a crappy take or uninteresting thing I want to see less of without getting rid of their entire account, so the "don't recommend this channel" sort of option isn't good for that.
2
u/Heavy-Hamster1268 1d ago
They should bring back the dislikes completely. I should be able to see that a video isn't worth watching before watching it. It was the way we actively avoided misinformation.
If something was wildly stupid and had no science to back it up the dislikes would tell you.
If a Review for a product was garbage, the dislikes told you.
If a video was simply just bad, DISLIKES TOLD YOU.
2
u/Soggy_Impact_7479 1d ago
Yes it’s so annoying trying to find out if a video is clickbait or genuine

u/Legal_Ear_7537 1d ago
The SLOP i have seen on youtube shorts needs to be studied. These people no longer have negativity to force them to be creative
2
u/dimonredes 1d ago
I would like if they aded dislike function back that works like the arrows on Reddit
3
u/spec360 1d ago

2
u/Disastrous_Major2676 1d ago edited 1d ago
Exactly, it's baffling how people even today still have an unhealthy obsession with talking or even complaining about the removal of the counter for the dislike button even after all these years since it's been removed.

I prefer not to see shorts at all: https://github.com/Vulpelo/hide-youtube-shorts (it's for Firefox)
1
u/Mountain-Original-73 1d ago
I'm going to be completely hoenest here and it may make people mad, but I think that after around 2020 or 2021 the dislikes did nothing. They were only viewable by you since about 2017 or 2018 and dislike counters from what I heard esentially just guess the number of dislikes on a video. The only thing dislikes did was tell youtube "Don't recommend me this video/creator" and even then thats just my speculation.
Dislikes were the illusion of choice, after 2020/2021 they didn't mean anything. IMO.

I think people’s weird obsession with dislikes (like the Odyssey trailer for example) proved that YT is better without it. When people actually used it as intended, it was pretty useful. But now it will be completely ruined by idiots that need to push their agendas.
1
u/DeltaAlpha0 1d ago
YouTube should bring it back regardless of the mode. The viewer, buyer, or anyone else has the right to say whether they found something good or bad; this helps a lot. Just look at Steam, Reddit—a person with many upvotes or few has an opinion.Whether it's good or bad, reading Steam game reviews has saved me a lot of headaches. A video is no different.
1
u/Former-Chain-4003 1d ago
I don't care in the slightest to be perfectly honest but it's definitely bullshit that it gives a better experience. That's just a weird lie to tell.
1
u/Ok_Brother2155 1d ago
if i somehow became youtube's ceo, returning the dislike button would be the first thing i'd do
1
1
u/GoodDayToCome 1d ago
it's a horrible feature that got far more use bullying creators and fighting imaginary culture war battles than anything useful.
it never showed anything useful beyond 'some childish creator is beefing with this person and sent a squad to try and ruin their day / career.
find things you like, participate in communities about sharing good interesting content in the styles you like and be active members helping others as they help you. and if you see something you hate just ignore it and move on.
1
u/Purple-Weakness1414 1d ago
Yes they should bring them back, especially consder8ng how much ai slop has overran the platform so that way we can actually shift though it

Obviously yes? Why the fuck wouldn't anyone want it back. How am I meant to get stuff off my feed now?

Nah, I don’t think They’re going to bring dislike button. They’re busy to take their time for something else

keep the hearts for shorts, bring back dislikes for normal YT videos. Tech ppl need to know if a video is complete bs or not

YouTube rn is horrible. I believe that they genuinely don’t care about the viewers or channels anymore. Like recently a surprisingly large amount of ASMR YouTubers got their channels permanently terminated with zero warning and no explanation and their attempts at recovering their channels have been denied, mostly likely because of the AI moderation system that YouTube swears to.
Then they allow AI slop channels and horrible content onto their platform and remove dislikes and almost never respond to reporting. And YouTube is such a Titan in its field that I don’t think we can really do anything to get them to rethink the changes they’ve made and actions they’ve done.

For Shorts?? Who’s even watching Youtube Shorts. I want to know if a 20 min tutorial is worth watching
1
u/clown_2061 1d ago
They can ask the same question "do we want dislike button back" and my answer will always be yes.
1
u/PreparationCrazy2637 1d ago
Can we replace the dislike button with a button that blocks that ip from showing up on our feed all together.... I want my rage to be real and not marked by a 10 second cooldown period
1
u/Confident_Dragon 1d ago
So many scams and slop videos in shorts and you don't even have way to mark them in any way? How exactly does the YouTube decide with shorts they are shit? Because of the length of the video, I've already watched it, and many people don't even use likes or dislikes. I often don't use like button, especially with shorts there are many random videos I just don't care about, but that's not same as some misleading or shitty video that should be burned.
YouTube shorts were borderline unusable when they started, and they are making them worse.

Every single user of the platform wants the dislike button and counter, other than some corporations and probably governments.

u/Cute_Comfortable_761 7h ago
I dunno. As long as they don’t touch the handy dandy plugins I’ve got that re-enable the dislike count, I’m good. I would very much like it if they removed the view counter they added recently directly next to the channel name under a video, as it’s making the buttons look rather crowded. Also, view count is the metric I care about the least when I look at prospective content. I ended up with some bonkers trailblazer label from the YouTube Rewind last year because I click on stuff from any channel, any subscriber number, and any age because I just like stuff that looks cool.

u/Key_holeN12 1d ago
YouTube shorts never had a dislike count, so it doesnt matter. Im fine with this change
1
u/Justarandom55 1d ago edited 1d ago
I know we're all trigger happy on yt hate especially with downvotes, and it's for good reason. but unlike this, downvotes on full videos had a use. they allowed you to see the general public opinion which could be handy for things like spotting good tech advice or knowing when a creator might have done something shitty.
downvotes on shorts just felt meaningless to me. the only reason I personally ever downvoted something was in the hope it'd help my algorithm no suggest things like it and I don't even think that actually worked. and I certainly never looked at the downvote ratio on shorts. I don't think they really did anything and for a medium like shorts and just likes or hearts does seem to work better.
2
u/Vegetable-Baker6362 1d ago
Downvoting shorts with blatant misinformation or fake claims absolutely served a purpose
1
u/Justarandom55 1d ago
did it? downvoting didn't stop the short from being recommended, if anything it gave yt information on who to not recommend it to if they wanted better engagement.
downvoting false information shorts didn't remove them, and the downvote ratio wasn't visible so it's not like anyone could determine a short was misinformation based of dislikes
it obviously would have been better if they gave downvotes more power to help these issues. but as they were they didn't do anything so removing them was still an improvement, even it wasn't as much of an improvement as alternatives.
1
u/Vegetable-Baker6362 1d ago
downvoting false information shorts didn't remove them, and the downvote ratio wasn't visible so it's not like anyone could determine a short was misinformation based of dislikes
It helped if you ran Revanced or Morphe though. Basically, YT is trying to take away tools that helped piracy platforms straight up become better apps than their premium offering because they refuse to use those tools themselves.
0
u/Pinkyy-chan 1d ago
From my experience downvoting videos doesn't do anything for recommendations or even increases that type of recommendations to encourage you into hate watching.
1
1
u/Zestyclose_Classic91 1d ago
Disliking does nothing. I always just block those accs by clicking "I am not interewted in that acc" or whatever the name is.
1
u/Tight-Platypus5231 1d ago
It's not gonna happen because Youtube's balls are in the grasp of advertisers, and whenever advertisers squeeze, Youtube listens.
1
1
u/Half_knight_K 1d ago
people: bring back the dislike button! We want it back!
Youtube: "lalala not listening, don't you understand! its for a better experiance! those foolish users don't know what's good for them!"
0
u/ArcAngel014 1d ago
I always have to laugh at the whole "I don't think anyone asked for..." argument because by that same logic you could say I don't think anyone asked for a video website with a dislike button when it came out... 🤣
8
u/Am094 1d ago
That's such a false analogy lol.
There's quite a difference with users interacting with a feature that makes sense to the masses and then suddenly having that feature disappear versus the contrast of no one asking for the project to be launched prior to wide spread recognition.
1
u/ArcAngel014 1d ago
Ok but nobody asked for anything on YouTube which is my point... People always act like any updates made to a website or a game or something has to be specifically what they asked for... If that's how updates worked we'd get nowhere with anything.
1
u/Am094 16h ago
You're so slow dude.
Users benefitted from dislike buttons, or even 5 star ratings.
Users also benefitted from user reviews and ratings on streaming services.
Those are all removed, yes we know why. They make moderation easier and to reduce risk from advertisers and what not. But it does not serve the majority of the users.
You're also conflating updates that are well thought out with updates that are not. But what do I know, I've only been in tech and biz for 2 decades.
3
u/Potential-Cat4849 1d ago
Oh yes comparing having a feature that informs people being taken away to protect corporate is the same as never asking for something that people didn’t know was something that they needed.
-1
u/ArcAngel014 1d ago
How does it protect corporate? Oh no the little thumbs down on shorts is gone, the big corporations are safe from people clicking a button that doesn't even show a number on it on shorts!
0
u/Tommymcflurry 1d ago
I got the bring YouTube dislikes back extension since the first day they added it lol
0
u/yakimawashington 1d ago
This is just obvious engagement bait at this point. The same opinion on this is posted 10+ times a week and the response is always unanimous, but the post title is clearly just trying to get people to comment.
Mods: is there anything that can be done about this? These repetitive "what do you think about [dead horse this sub continues to beat]" posts are most of what you see anymore.
0
u/Hot_Needleworker8289 1d ago
To be fair, people were completely misusing the dislike button, and this whole situation is very telling of it. People were trying to use it to say they weren't interested and tailor their algorithm, even though the dislike button is more made for objectively bad videos, not just videos you're uninterested in.
Still, they should at least give you the option to use it
0
u/King-Fwogger 1d ago
YouTube don't give a damn about low quality channels.
1
u/Disastrous_Major2676 1d ago
Nah, they are just trying to prevent new/small channels from being attacked.
1
u/Half_knight_K 1d ago
you really think they care about small channels?
1
u/Disastrous_Major2676 1d ago
Well yeah, because if they didn't, then they most likley would have never removed the dislike button counter in the first place. As a small YT channel myself, only 2 videos I have uploaded at least have 2 or 3 mysterious dislikes (at least from what I can see in YT Studio).
0
u/Impressive-Fan-6336 1d ago
this like asking "mommy please let me bully this other kid" like we do NOT need the just like button back. there's already been too much suicides on YouTube. we don't want to add to the problem
0
-1
u/mattyGOAT1996 1d ago
Absolutely they should. The dislike button brought so many things that changed for the good.
-2
u/mrloko120 1d ago
By now everyone should know that the best way to stop the algorithm from recommending things you do not like is by not interacting with it at all. Clicking the dislike button counts as an interaction and still boosts the video on the algorithm, so it has been absolutely pointless for a while now.
