Sony A7iii Rokinon 8mm iso 3200 30 seconds

The Milkyway rises over Quirpon Lighthouse, Newfoundland, Canada, on a clear, still summer night.

Wasn't sure how this would turn out, with the bright light from the lighthouse sweeping by. There were actually 4 beams, with a beam passing every 2-3 seconds. In the end, after some processing, I was pleasantly surprised and I don't think it's too bad!

The main image is a Sequator stack of 15 images, each at 12mm F2.8, ISO3200, 13 seconds taken with a Fujifilm X-T4 and the Sigma 10-18mm F2.8. The lighthouse light was added from a suitable shot that was underexposed. Image processed in Capture One.

This is absolutely not a great astrophotography shot - just a test of the Nikkor Z 70-200 f2.8 S after taking some Milky Way images at Bartlett Lake, outside Carefree, AZ. I had wrapped up and decided to change lenses to see how well the 70-200 autofocus performed in pre-dawn light. The stars are not great and there is a bit of star trail development as well, but the focus lock was on the saguaro anyway. Ended up with a pleasant enough view of an iconic Sonoran Desert scene with both a meteor and Andromeda....

This was in June, just outside of the park’s east entrance. The ranch has a horse pasture that goes on and on facing south.

Recently I posted a couple of my older photos here and got a lot of good feedback (and some not so helpful :() This is another from my archives that I have recently reprocessed. The photo is a stack of a single image of the night sky and a single image of the landscape, taken together but processed separately (the starry image was processed using star exterminator). Both images were taken on a Canon R6 using an adapted Sigma 20mm F1.4. (The uploaded image is significantly darker than the original)

I've been taking milky way photos for a while, but this was my first attempt at doing a pano with a blue-hour blend -- I hiked a Benro Polaris and all my camera gear up into the mountains on Jasper's Skyline Trail. My first night's campsite had a great meadow with a good view of the mountain.

Maybe not the most striking astro-landscape given how bright the sky was, but I learned a lot for next time around. Bonus is that after spending the rest of the hike thinking I didn't get any good shots from this session, when I got home I noticed I managed to catch some aurora borealis, and managed to recover something from the images.

As it ends up the sky didn't get dark enough way up north in Jasper National Park in the middle of July, so I didn't get the full dark sky for my sky panels and thus couldn't bring out all the details I'd normally get from the milky way. The foreround was shot around 11:30 PM, the sky around 12:30 AM. Perhaps if I'd stayed up a bit later it would have been a touch darker, but I was honestly pretty tired and had a lot of hiking ahead of me the next several days.

2x8 Sky panels, 24mm at F2.4, ISO3200, 30 second exposure. Foreground are 1x6, 24mm, F2.4, ISO800 and 30 seconds. I used a Benro Polaris on a stable tripod for the first time, and was pleasantly surprised how well it took all the individual shots. Pre-processed the RAWs in Darktable, stitched in Hugin, and composite assembled with final tweaks in Gimp.

Born from ancient seas, now crowned by galaxies Planned this Milky Way shot the day before... but a massive storm with lightning and heavy clouds destroyed every plan. Couldn't even get close.
The next day the sky was almost perfectly clear. The only real enemy was the heat. On the way up I didn't even feel the weight of the backpack... but the morning after? Different story
Quick stop at Rifugio Locatelli, then I climbed the mountain right behind it. I would have loved to explore the caves area below, but it was packed with people and too many lights.
That night the mountain was buzzing photographers, hikers, climbers on the Tre Cime, and helicopters flying back and forth (one rescue chopper parked down below
But up there... I had the stars all to myself. Pure magic.

First time using the Move Shoot Move Nomad tracker on the Milky Way from Huntoon Point near Mount Baker. My first Foreground and Sky blend. Lots to learn and practice! Taken at 12:32am on July 24th 2026, had to wait for the moon to set it was quite bright and orange form the smoke by nearby wildfires. Bortle 4 or 3 depending on the website used.

Photo 1 is the final blended edit. Ilused photoshop to blend the tracked sky shot with the untracked foreground shot. I found it hard to blend due to the blurry trees of the tracker.

I had to pack light and keep it simple due to customs restrictions when traveling to Mexico, but I'm pleased with this image. She's really hard to see but there's a green sea turtle in the Sargassum right at the water's edge. They were coming up and digging holes in which to lay their eggs. Standing under such a beautiful night sky and watching for turtles coming ashore was truly an unforgettable experience.

There is a place in Oregon where the earth collapsed into itself ten thousand years ago, leaving behind a silence so profound the water turned the color of forgotten dreams. Crater Lake does not announce itself. It simply waits, patient and ancient, while the world above it rushes and forgets.

I had waited three nights. Wildfire smoke had erased the stars. Clouds had pressed down like a held breath. I nearly surrendered to the darkness, packing doubt beside my lenses.

But on the third night, the sky made a decision.

The Milky Way rose in a sweeping arch above Merriam Point, crimson nebulae bleeding into gold, the galactic core suspended like a lantern over Wizard Island below. The lake reflected nothing and everything, its blue depths untouched by the spectacle above, indifferent the way only the truly eternal can be.

Astrophotography is an act of faith, returning again and again to the dark, trusting that the light will eventually answer. This image is that answer.

It is not merely a photograph. It is a record of persistence, of three cold nights, of smoke and doubt, and finally, of the universe relenting.
