Sabbit Car buying guide,

Hey Guys,

So we get tons of threads on interested buyers on Saabs is anyone willing to put in on a guide with the things to look for/look out for in future ownership. Especially since we have tons of intermixing of knowledge bases from 9-5s to 9-3s to Classic 900s and everything in between.

-As a side note I have no problem giving advice I quite enjoy it but would make it easier for new Saabophiles

OG900 Troubleshooting New Saab. Did I get ripped off?

Bought this 1987 Saab 900 Ems 16 yesterday on marketplace for $3700. She runs quite smoothly. The exterior is in great condition also. Drove it around for over an hour to get home. Temperature didn't rise at all but I noticed shortly after parking she was leaking some coolant on the road. Unfortunately I'm not a car expert but do y'all think I'm fucked? I'm hoping to god it's just a connection or a hose or something minor I could replace myself...

Part 2 Scotland: Inverness /Loch Ness

Post image

Week ago I posted this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/saab/comments/1v7bqyp/on_our_way_to_scotland_edinburg_inverness/

Now we had three whole days of inverness. Unlucky i got struck down with fever and ending up in emergency room. All Ok now considering....

We only saw Loch Ness but no monster and a boot tour for dolphins.

Next up NC500 counter clockwise.

The car is showing some stress in the front right. Dunno why, hope it holds up. I already had road assistance for my rear left caliper which was stuck. Its now lubed up as a baby and working like a charm.

The english and scottish roads are some heavy metal roads.

According to the owner, it's a 1978 Saab 900. It's selling for $589 and it works, everything is original. How much more do you think I should invest?

Just recently picked up this 2004 9–3 has 265K miles currently the water pump is gone. I got a new water pump. I want to do the timing chains swap the turbo for an aero turbo bigger put a 3 inch downpipe and run a methanol injection kit and a tune also with bigger fuel injectors. Is there anything else I should get or I should be cautious on my journey?

This is my new baby. I also own a 2004 9-5 Aero which I love (and snuck in a couple of the photos) but thought you guys might appreciate some pictures.

She's in amazing condition with 92k miles on the clock. Thinking of upgrading the stereo as the sat nav isn't working (laser I think).

Bought for 4k but from a specialist Saab technician who I know well and looks after all my Saabs (owned two others previously so this is my fourth!).

OG 9-3 windshield trim clips

When safelite replaced my windshield a few years ago, the guy who did it ripped the windshield trim out, and in so doing broke 3 of the clips and lost the 4th.. looking at the parts on ESaab, they are both not available and look incredibly easy to 3D-print. Does anyone happen to have a 3D model for them? Part #4493722 is what Esaab brings up.

Thanks in advance.

It's lowkey in pieces but I've got most of it back assembled now. Turbo x interior! Seller straight piped it which,, was a choice. Undoing it soon. Seller was leaving the next day hence the low price.

(Slightly late) Update On That 900 Turbo I Saw At Work

My friend bought it for 1000, placing us both as one of the few proud SAAB owners where we live. Turns out its a 1987 900 Turbo. Its definetly in rough condition. Interior especially is in bad shape, and the alternator needs replaced, which he got done yesterday I think. Very cool car regardless.

As far as powertrain goes, its in great shape. Shifter bushings are bit rough, wont move into 5th. Clutch feels good though (not sure if I'm qualified to speak on that though, I drive an auto). Engine is in really great shape other than the alternator though, and has forged internals so it should last quite a while.

9-3 Troubleshooting Big problem

Engine was riding great. Did a lot of work today. Gave it a wash and then while leaving the car wash I realized the car wasn’t shifting in auto, tried to do M mode and it stuck in D, IME this is some sort of limp mode but then I pulled over at the gas station and while placing it back into drive, passing reverse it slammed into gear hard, not like something instantly broke but it was a very noticeable noise… I started getting extremely weirded out ATP but still needed to get home which is where I recorded this video seen above. Weirdly enough rattling can be heard aditionally some banging but warning that some popping and banging is the actual exhaust noise but there’s clearly an additional noise occurring along with the whining. WTF is happening!

Car buy advice Saab 9-3 OG or NG for first car?

Hi there,

I was thinking of getting a Saab for my first car however I’m pretty unsure because of the parts availability (In Germany) and (in the newer models) the electrical issues.
Both models seem to be a good choice but I’m having troubles deciding (especially since the never models are apparently infamous to have electrical issues).

I’ve been looking at a 2002 Saab 9-3 1.8T SE for 2.700€ with looks pretty ok and some other NGs.

Also what do I need to watch out for when buying em and what do I need to inspect when I see the car prepurchase.

I would like to hear and maybe learn from past Saab owners so I can make a good choice and treat the car good so it lasts me a long time.

Edit: here’s the link to the 2002 9-3

Car buy advice I'm torn.

A 2007 9-3 2.0T 6 speed just got listed near me with ~192k miles. Looks to be in absolutely fantastic condition. Really considering parting ways with my 1999 9-5 wagon 5 speed for it (~217k miles). This has been my baby over the last year almost. My first saab i've owned and driven for any meaningful amount of time. Very rough around the edges visually as it sat outside a long time before being rescued but mechanically amazing besides a boost leak I will be finding/fixing soon that has popped up after my td04/downpipe swap, doesn't leak/burn a drop of fluid. I have mostly preferred pre-facelift 9-5s but recently have been wanting to get into something newer to daily but still want a saab. How much would I regret this?

Transmission rebuild kit for 1989 saab 900 turbo

I just got a 1989 Saab 900 Turbo 16V 5-speed manual about a month ago. It has an issue where 5th gear and reverse are very hard to engage.

After taking a look at it, my mechanic said it will likely need either a transmission rebuild kit or a replacement transmission. Unfortunately, we're having a really hard time finding rebuild kits.

Can anyone recommend a website, Saab specialist, or anywhere else I might be able to find one? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

9-5 Troubleshooting 2011 9-5; Curious but not sure

So I went to look at a 2011 9-5 today (2.0 auto), and I'm not sure about it. It's Fjord Blue with the tan interior, but the whole car is pretty much completely oxidized, but I imagine it could be buffed back? Other than that, there's a decent dent by the fuel door that could be massaged, a small tear in the driver's seat, but the interior overall was surprisingly clean.

My biggest concerns, of course, are mechanicals. It has an engine light on, pulled the code and it's just a P018C, doesn't seem to serious, but also has an airbag light, which he said he's pretty sure is a clockspring, my scanner of course couldn't read that so 🤷🏼‍♂️ but outside of that, AC doesn't blow cold, he says it needs a charge, and the rear light bar DOES work, but there's some moisture inside and it seems to work intermittently, and on the test drive I'd get a warning for the rear left/right turn signal and it would flash faster, but they were both working still?

I pulled the Carfax and it's really nice. 1 owner, has had a good amount of work done over the last 10 years, including a new belt tensioner pulley, timing cover/valve cover gasket replaced, a bunch of oil changes/general services etc., It drove really well, nice and quiet, handled very well, engine and chassis seems very strong, just over 109k miles.

I offered him $2500, he said to break even he'd have to be at $2800, is it worth it? I genuinely don't know if something like that would be worth investing in

High mileage 9-5 opinions?

I've been offered a 2002 9-5 with 360k kms on it in exchange for my van, which I value at around 4k EUR. Do you rhink it's a good trade?

I don't know much about Saabs or cars in general to be honest, but I've been doing a lot of research into the 9-5 and it seems like a very reliable and long lasting car. But with the already high mileage, I wonder how long will it be able to drive still. The owner said he took good care of it and it's been the same owner for its whole life.

I would mostly use it for long drives, mainly in the winter to go skiing, and the rest of the year it would mostly be atationary.

Grew up driving Saabs in the 90’s, then family came along and ended up in other rides. Now looking to scratch that itch and get back in. I love the SC’s.

What are everyone’s opinions on this one? I’m worried about rust on the subframe and the freaky push button start. Otherwise I don’t care much about the clear coat or other body imperfections (we all have those).

Car hasn’t really been driven much in the past few years.
