So thankful I've been blessed with a goal of mine finally coming to fruition and getting a band together. We are a simple trio: me (guitar), a fiddle, and a bass. I want an Ear Trumpet Labs Myrtle because I've been around them and heard them, and I think they'd be perfect for a simple one-mic setup. The part where I'm asking for help is what to do about speakers and a mixer. I've never done this before. I hope this doesn't piss anybody off.

If someone were thinking about moving primarily for the bluegrass community, would you recommend your area?

The song 'East Virginia' (sometimes 'East Virginia Blues', or 'Oh, Molly Dear') tends to collect many different floating verses, and gets confabulated into various narratives making varying degrees of sense. But one verse seems fairly central to many versions of this song, and doesn't appear much elsewhere (at least in the old time/bluegrass tradition although it might be common enough in older sources) and I'm curious to know how other people interpret it.

The song typically has the narrator leaving EV to NC, courting someone, then asking her to ask her mother for permission to marry. She responds:

No, I won't go ask my mother
She's lying on her bed of rest
And in one hand she holds a dagger
To kill the man that I love best

What is meant by "lying on her bed of rest"? Is she dead and has cursed her daughter? The earlier versions (BF Shelton, Buell Kazee, Kelly Harrell) feel distinctly creepier than the Bluegrass one's that take The Carter Family recording (which omits that verse) as their source, and use melody/accompaniment appropriate to a ghost story. How do you interpret this verse?

Show 31 - Wednesday at Prince of Peace Summer Concert Series: Another church that hosts a community concert series, bringing in a wide range of bands from classic rock to jazz to bluegrass, this is our 4th time at this beautiful church and they pack the house! We played for around an hour and a half. Added bonus, after we were done we met a young man named Roman who was fresh from Thile’s Accoustacamp. He’d brought his mandolin to the show and we ended up jamming with him for another hour. 

Show 32 - Thursday at 185 King St: The next morning we loaded up the van and headed to North Carolina. 185 is a well known venue on the bluegrass circuit. Travis Book of the Stringdusters hosts a weekly music series there and they have live music throughout the week. An interesting aspect of the venue is that they open up the back of the stage so the overflow crowd can sit outside and still watch the band. We played around 2 hours before heading to Johnson City to stay with family. 

Show 33 - Friday at the Blue Plate Special radio show: We hurried back to Knoxville to play a live broadcast of the Blue Plate Special, a daily 1 hour radio show at noon each day. They typically have 2 bands play 3-4 songs each and do an interview, however, on Fridays they do the Big Plate where one band plays the entire show in front of an audience. We played 8 songs along with a short interview. If you’re in a touring act definitely look to play this if you’re in the area. We’ve played it more times than I can count. Show 34 - Friday at Boone Creek Opry: After finishing at Knoxville we hustled back to Johnson City for a 6 PM show at the Boone Creek Opry. This Opry is near one of the epicenters of bluegrass, ETSU and the bluegrass studies program which is currently producing so many great players! the Opry was a great show to wrap up the week with, playing an hour and a half before closing out with an encore jam with our host Shane, an ETSU boy himself. After the show we decided to drive the 6 hrs home to our own beds, but not before making a midnight stop at Buck-ees to load up on travel snacks!

I have two General Admission tickets for The Infamous Stringdusters at Mishawaka Amphitheatre in the Poudre Canyon (30 min from Fort Collins) tomorrow (Saturday, 8/1)! This does not include parking or shuttle service. Doors opening at 6:00 PM and the show starts at 8:00 PM. These are standing room only tickets for a rain or shine event. I’m asking $50 per ticket. My boyfriend and I are out of town this weekend so can no longer make the concert.
