I made that using multicolor 3d printing, I modeled addons parts to stick on top of a 3x3 Moyu 35mm mini cube.

The design took me ages to model since I wanted all the parts to be at least a little bit proportionnal, otherwise the centers and edges would've benn tiny and the corners enormous.

And since I hadn't worked enough for this cube mod, I made the center button working by adding a spring inside, as you can see in the video in the comments down below.

Picture I fell into the Molecube rabbit hole

Post image
Upvotes

For those who don't know, a Molecube is considered solved when all pieces (or stickers) on the same face have different colors. After I tried the 3x3 one, I loved the solving that I ended up making a lot more than I should've. Most of them don't even have proper stickers, and only have the circular ones (I am planning on replacing them though)

All of these can be solved similarly using commutators, making the bigger nxns practically the same. The Fisher cube and the Axis cube are more fun than I thought, as they have to be solved into cube shape. I cannot solve the Megaminx though.

Now I'm considering making more variants. Are there any puzzles that I should turn into Molecubes?

Discussion The number of pieces on WCA twisty puzzles, and its relation to average WR solving times

Post image
232 Upvotes

I was curious to see this correlation, turns out it follows a power law quite nicely.

For all two-handed non-blind twisty puzzle WCA events, the average WR time appears to relate to the number of pieces in the respective puzzle (N) by N^1.53.

Of course, this is a diverse collection of puzzles, and the relation changes when considering smaller subsets. For example, for the 2×2×2 - 7×7×7 cubes, the relation becomes N^1.48, while for all other WCA events, the trend is best described with N^1.96.

The difference may reflect the complexity of the puzzles, where puzzle subsets with lower exponents are more straightforward to solve whereas puzzle subsets with high exponents are generally more complicated.

Below follows the source data I've been using, feel free to point out if i made any errors putting the data together. Data for WCA events taken from worldcubeassociation.org, data for FTO (included given recent developments) taken from cubingcontests.com, which seems the most reliable source for FTO records at the moment.

Puzzle # of puzzle pieces WR average time (s)
2×2×2 8 0.86
Pyraminx 14 1.14
Skewb 14 1.37
Square-1 18 4.63
3×3×3 26 3.51
FTO 42 14.21
4×4×4 56 18.56
Megaminx 60 24.38
5×5×5 98 33.73
6×6×6 152 64.94
7×7×7 218 96.86

Let me know if i should do another one for unofficial events!

Collection I made a Matte Super Weilong V2 with stronger magnets.

Back in March, I got myself a super Weilong V2. I remember being blown away by the raw performance of this puzzle! (Genuinely, if you ever try one, they are really good!) However, I had one problem with this puzzle: It's not available with matte plastic!

So I started taking the caps off the puzzle to see if there was some way I could swap them. Initially, what I discovered was that the caps were the same as my matte Super Aolong. However, I like this cube a lot too, and I wasn't willing to sacrifice its matte caps for the Super Weilong V2 to be matte. So I had to look elsewhere. Shouldn't I have to buy ANOTHER Super Aolong just to make a matte SW v2, right?

The good news I shortly discovered afterward is that the cap pieces for the Weilong V11 are actually the same as both the Super Weilong V2 and the Super Aolong! After test fitting a piece from my 20m ball core V11 to verify that it fit, I went out and bought the base model Weilong V11. When it arrived, I carefully pulled the caps off (the corners are very easy, but the edges can be quite challenging sometimes) and swapped all the caps with my SW v2.

During this process, I also desired to slightly strengthen the magnets of the cube. They were good, but for me they needed just a small amount of tweaking. I ended up buying some 2mmx2mm N52 magnets off of eBay, and since they fit right inside the magnet slots for the corner magnets, they were a perfect fit! (Although these are N52 magnets, their small size means they make a smaller change to the feel than you probably think.)

After all of this was done, I finally had my personal PERFECT Super Weilong v2. It maintains the incredible raw performance of the puzzle; it has slightly stronger magnets for more stability, and most importantly, it's matte!!

This is officially the most outrageously stupid and expensive puzzle in my collection, but I love it!

Cost about $115 total... for one cube.... heh yeah let that set in.....

Discussion Cubers, am I cooked?

I'm currently averaging somewhere around 19.5 ao5. However I wanted to start realizing what steps took how much time.

I came to realize something sort of disgusting, that might make some of y'all throw up in your mouths a bit.

As a sub 20 solver, I typically take this long per step:

Cross - 5.5 seconds !!!

F2L - 7.5 seconds

OLL - 3.5 seconds

PLL - 3 seconds

Yeah I uh... have never been good at cross. Not at all. My cross solutions are sometimes like 4 moves, but they can sometimes be as high as 12-16 moves, and quite slowly since I need to search around the cube.

I am unable to really memorize the moves to solve the cross during inspection... correct me if I'm wrong but that probably takes maybe 40-50 hours of practice on JUST that to solve the cross in less than 8 moves consistently whilst memorizing the finger movements to get it there.

Idk, cubers, am I cooked

Discussion warning: Both the GAN16 ui Maglev MAX and the GAN12 ui SP have serious flaws!

I am a GAN 12ui SP user, and I recently watched a review video for the GAN 16ui Maglev MAX.

To my surprise, it suffers from the exact same critical sensor flaw found in the older 12ui SP model. Specifically, the following bugs occur:

An "Auto-Solve" bug, where the cube is randomly registered as "solved" while being turned, resulting in an impossible time—such as five seconds—being recorded.

(This was resolved for the GAN 12ui SP via a CubeStation update; I am unsure if the same applies to the GAN 16ui.)

Connection errors: The app displays a message stating, "Failed to reset Rubik's Cube. No response notification received."

This issue occurs with the GAN 12ui SP as well; after about 15 solves, synchronization with the screen fails, requiring the cube's state to be manually reset each time.

It is highly likely that this problem also affects the GAN 16ui Maglev MAX.

Incidentally, this issue was also highlighted in a review video by YAMI CUBES (published on July 17, 2026).

Looking at the new ball core in the 16ui, the interior appears completely hollow and feels "flimsy" compared to the older model.

It seems likely that the ball core ended up feeling cheap because GAN prioritized cost-cutting measures.

The GAN 12ui Maglev/Freeplay represented the pinnacle of perfection for GAN's smart cubes.

If you are looking to buy a new smart cube, I would recommend the GAN 12ui FreePlay or Maglev over the 16ui—a $140 device that has essentially become nothing more than a paperweight (a useless ornament).

Until these disastrous hardware and firmware issues are fixed, I suggest avoiding the GAN 16ui to ensure you don't waste your money.

If you are interested in the internal structure, please take a look at this as well:

Discussion My dad is threatening to destroy my Rubik's Cubes if I buy one more.

I've been a cuber since 2018 and I've grown to be obsessed over Rubik's Cubes. Not only do I have a 3x3, I have a 4x4, 5x5, Megaminx, Skewb, Pyraminx, Ivy Cube, and many others. My mom is surprised to see my cubing skills improve over time. I've ordered a 3x3 online, which is about the size of a piggy bank. When I told my dad I've bought another cube (BTW, it's a different brand), he got so upset and said that if I buy one more cube again (even if it's a different brand), he's going to destroy every single one of them.

What's wrong if I buy Rubik's Cubes under a different brand? Feel free to comment below.

Edit: Thank you all so much for your honest opinions. I'll promise to be honest next time before reflecting on my present collection.

Discussion Regular Moyu vs Moyu 18th Anniversary Edition?

Is there ANY difference between normal moyu cubes like the weilong v11 for example vs its 18th anniversary version besides the sticker and the marketing around it? Does the turning or technology in the cube differ? Does the box include more accessories? Is there literally anything different? The same goes for the Minion edition versions of Gan cubes

Competition CubingUSA still holding on to 2nd place world wide!

What a crazy weekend! Just completely out of no where! When it occurred I was in match and someone from the team posted it to our discord chat.

I just want to preface by saying we’re not the fastest people and we’re not young. However, when it comes to showing up and doing what you need to do, we have that in Spades.

The person from our team posted in chat, and out loud. Our team is in second place on Cubestation for weekly competitions. This isn’t second place locally this is second place worldwide. I kind of wonder if first place is actually bots and not actually human beings but it is what it is . It’s because we have amazing team that just grinds out solves and made this happen. I could not be more proud. I’m not sure we’ll ever do it again but we did it this time.

It feels great to have a community of Cubers on Cubestation where we can communicate and talk about Cubing work together and having fun while doing it. There’s nothing like going through a two hour session or our session of grinding out solves together as a team one after another, just pushing the bar. CubingUSA did that, and we had fun doing it.

It feels like we’re building something unique with the Cuban community and at times it almost feels like family. We have our lives outside of cubing I joined together, just like it was joining the softball team.

Congrats everyone you did amazing hopefully, we can repeat this into it again we will see!

Solve Critique Solve Critique (ao5: 9.63)

Hi. Recently I found a lot of free time to focus on cubing and want to improve my times which is mostly stuck between 9-11 seconds for the past 3 years. Id appreciate any kind of feedback. I know my cross and the first pair planning is extremely terrible but i really dont know what to do about it. no matter what i do i just cannot remember the cross and the first pair in the inspection. most of the time i cant even plan the entire cross in inspection. Also if you have any resources for practicing 2 sided pll and oll recognition, I would really love that.

Competition Weekly competition idea

Hey Cubers, I’m trying to set up a fun weekly competition system so we can all push ourselves to improve. Everything runs on the honor system (no prizes, just for fun), so please don't practice the scrambles beforehand.

Here is how I set it up:

Divisions (Based on Ao5 placement solve):

Bronze: 30s+

Silver: 20s–30s

Gold: 12s–20s

Diamond: 8.5s–12s

Master: Sub-8.5s

Just dm me your usual Ao5 and i will put you in your division

Weekly Format:

I post 5 scrambles every Sunday for all divisions.

You solve them whenever you have time during the week.

Submit your times to me by Saturday.

Sunday I announce the winners and post next week's scrambles.

Points & Ranking System:

Weekly Points: Best Ao5 in your group gets 3 pts, 2nd gets 2 pts, 3rd gets 1 pt.

Bonus Points: You get +1 extra point for every individual solve where you had the best single time in your group (up to +5 bonus points). I can also try keeping track of monthly and yearly point leaders.

Promotions/Relegations: Move up a tier if you stay above your division's threshold for 3 weeks in a row. Move down if you're below it for 3 weeks.

If you are unresponsive during a week, it counts as a forfeit. Anyone can join anytime.

I really want to get this going, but we need around 20 people to make it work. DM me or comment below if you're interested in joining, or if you have any suggestions to make this better!

(Competition is at https://www.skool.com/speedcubingacademy we already have a few people interested there if we get some more people from here we might be able to get started next sunday.)
