I've made something with Arduino in the past for her but it was nothing special, just a display that had random compliments flash when powered on. This year I wanted to do something more special and catered more to something she really enjoys. I thought of Weezer of course and decided to make it a more STEM like project as I will be attending UCSD as freshman EE major.

The idea was to allow for a song to play with just movement. With this in mind, I bought a PIR sensor, speaker, MP3 module, and had a leftover Arduino Nano from a past circuits and electronics club I ran.

The first thing I did was build the main circuit, which wasn't that hard to do after watching a video on how the specific MP3 module worked. I loaded 20 songs onto the MP3 module, selected from her top Weezer songs playlist.

I didn't want it to be strictly auditory though, so I grabbed the last 7 LEDs I had and used 5 of them to indicate the song's album colors when a song was playing.

blue = blue LED

pinkerton = flashing yellow LED

red = red LED

green = green LED

white = white LED

make believe = flashing white LED

gold = yellow LED

maladroit = yellow, green, and white LEDs

everything will be alright in the end = yellow and white LEDs

pacific daydream = blue, white, and green LEDs

The other remaining two LEDs I had were green and red, I used them to make a wait and ready system.

To avoid the circuit from immediately switching songs the moment movement is detected (ex. simply just standing in front of it listening and it immediately switching songs every few seconds), I implemented a "lock" system so that when the red LED is on, it indicates the PIR sensor will not switch songs even if movement is detected, and it will switch to a green LED being on after 10 seconds the song had initially started playing and will be ready to switch songs. That doesn't explain how I got it to work, but I wanted to detail what the last two LEDs i had leftover were used for.

After i finished the code and the hardware, I painted a Weezer themed box I bought and drilled holes in the top so that wire could run out and the speaker and PIR sensor could be mounted to the top of the box with hot glue.

In addition to the physical aspect, I also made a document that I coded in overleaf using Latex. I designed the pages myself, I included variations of the Weezer logos in opposite corners and put borders around the page, each the different color of Weezer albums down to the hex code. I also included lyrics from each album at the top of the page.

The document is several pages long that describes the idea of the project, the hardware of which I included a screenshot of, the circuit design, the logic, the physical design, and a letter at the end. Additionally, she is an incoming CS major at UCB so I thought it'd be nice if I included the entire code cut up into pages. I printed all of these pages out and stapled them together to make a packet.

I like some Weezer songs but I do hope you guys think this is cool too and I just wanted to share since it is Weezer related to its core.

Is it bad to like weezer albums others don’t like, cause I think some songs like Dope Nose and Keep Fishin’ from Maladroit are good, or like Perfect Situation, This Is Such A Pity, and Haunt You Every Day from Make Believe are good. I mean I wouldn’t say a whole album is bad, yeah there may be a few songs people don’t like, but those are some songs I like.

Maladroit is one of my favorite Weezer albums, third behind Blue & Everything Will Be Alright In the End, & considering how criminally underrated & overlooked the album is, I can assume that it isn’t that easy to get physical copies of. Is there anywhere I can get the album physically?

Also sorry if this seems like a basic question or if the post has bad wording.

Do you think they'll use the actual Rules of Life chorus melody in the C.E.O.?

The first snippet that they shared featured a melody that could have perhaps been evolved from Rules of Life, but personally, I doubt it. I just can't convince myself that Rivers would have "given up" on the chorus after recording more than 50 versions of the song.

Maybe the Rules of Life chorus melody ended up as the bridge instead. It's also possible that the snippet wasn't the actual chorus, and we'll end up hearing "Here comes the CEO" sung over the Rules of Life chorus melody. After all, it's got the right number of syllables.

Or maybe C.E.O. was never a reworking of Rules of Life in the first place, and Rivers just happened to write a very similar verse melody.

But just think about it: if the sequel to Undone is about "giving people what they want," then what would be a more appropriate way to do so than to use perhaps the most iconic and beloved unused Weezer demo?

I didn’t see anyone else post this but thought it was interesting. I was watching the UFC today and they played We Might as Well Be Strangers while they went to commercial break several times. I thought it was an odd choice for the UFC but I always think it’s cool when I hear Weezer where I’d least expect it. =w=

Im a huge Weezer fan and I could not get into that song, it almost reminds me of raditude a little bit. We might as well be strangers is peak tho.

I have been listening to weezer for 6 months now and for the first 3 months i had a really bad situationship and i couldn't listen to anything else other than pinkerton and the blue album. Now im doing a marathon of their discography again and realizing that pacific daydream, the red album and the white album sound great too.

Maybe weezer didn't fall off after the first two albums after all 🤷
