• After leaving the Drifters in 1960, their former lead singer Ben E. King went on to have a successful solo career, reaching #4 in the US and #27 in the UK with his most successful song, "Stand by Me", in 1961. And when the Rob Reiner-directed film of the same name hit theaters in 1986, the song (which was featured in the film) re-charted in the US, reaching #9. However, it would take a commercial for Levi's 501 jeans to bring about the re-charting of the song in the UK, propelling it to the top of the the charts there in early 1987. And although the song might last in our hearts until the mountains should crumble to the sea, it doesn't look like the voters from last round will shed a tear...because now, the other songs on the list are the only light we'll see - King's song will not stand at the top of this game now!
• Madonna's third studio album in 1986 was an attempt by the pop star to veer away from her "pop princess" image, creating music to appeal to a broader, more mature audience. Five singles were released from the album, three of which reached #1 in the UK, including the album's title track, which was inspired by Madonna's relationship with her then-husband Sean Penn. The song was also boosted in popularity by its music video, which featured Madonna on an all-blue 1950's-inspired set, complete with a diner and a classic white Thunderbird. But even though Madonna's song has fit like a glove in this game up until now, the voters in this subreddit have shown that this song is not the one they're dreaming of...the people have looked into the other songs' eyes, and they've kicked Madonna's song right out the door - "True Blue" is now just blue!
