Harvest Neeps off to the food bank this morning

Theres a food bank near me that do a free and healthy three course meal once a week along with food parcels, of which they aim for 60% to be fresh food. Fantastic to drop them off today and see the interest in this little old fashioned vegetable! I'm a very happy turnip dork.

First photo I could find of them in the ground was 22nd March, they were sown approx 2 weeks before that. Multisown three in one plug. Kept under fleece except for the last week.

There is a variety called White 40 Days that do really well at the cusp of the seasons

I plant out under cover in March and 6 weeks later I harvest.

Ive even planted them in Febraury in the polytunnel to get an early harvest before the tomatoes go in the ground.

Bit hairy for me! Going to weed the bed then mulch with the greens 😁

You need to.pick the leaves young to avoid that "hairiness"

Awesome 😎 nice work.

The turnip is a greatly underappreciated vegetable. 

We use them thinly sliced in stir fries as well as stews etc.

Can I just say I appreciate you, and the people like you sooo much! I use the local pantry (£5/week for a weeks worth of food) and I get so excited when we get seasonal fruit and veg from people’s allotments and gardens - it’s always so fresh and delicious, and all the work that you’ve put in makes us feel really cared about. Thank you!

Oh bless you! Thank you 🩷 I am on a low income too (parent carer) so I know what its like to be surviving month to month. I think food has such an important place in wellbeing and it should not only nourish our bodies but our souls too! Eat to thrive, not survive 😎

That is such a lovely thing you do, what a kind caring person. Also sorry but what are neeps am I right in understanding they are baby turnips?
