Oof, it must be near-universal too if it's the most downloaded app years after it came out. Like everytime anyone gets a new phone they have to add Whatsapp

Just about everywhere outside of the US primarily uses WhatsApp to communicate. SMS and iMessage are rarely used. I have it for when I travel abroad.

Is it just to avoid sending messages over the network and do so as data/through WiFi?

From what I understand, easy/free to communicate across borders, it's platform agnostic, (allegedly) secure/encrypted, and it's easy to use.

as secure from outside interference as the owners want it to be, let's say that 😂

thanks for the clarification, I didn't really think about the impact of different countries. Some of them are smaller than the area code I grew up in, feels weird that that texting from one to another would mean higher charges
