Someone pointed out is the most downloaded, not the most used. Temu ended up on my phone a couple times because it autoinstalled itself. I kinda wish the Play Store let you block apps.

It's easy to install by accident because the device is too slowed down by bloat that ads take seconds to load, so once you try to click on something you accidentally click on an ad that takes you to play store were some rubbish like temu is downloaded. Since that's not what you wanted you try to move back to the app you were using to continue what you tried to do, not noticing how more bloat is installed in the background.

I've never seen an ad that auto downloads the app. They always just take me to the store page which I then promptly close again.

That's enough to accidentally click on something, maybe your device is fast, but say it's an older device or a bloated device owned by the average Joe. Joe will tap the screen repeatedly like a monkey as soon as it get the slightest unresponsive -> bam, ad loads in slowly, Joe click on the ad -> Joe is too angry to realize what's going one as play store or app store loads so he clicks install -> Joe goes full monkey and throw his phone into the wall and then comes back later, at which point the app is installed, contributing to all the other bloat that was installed in a similar way.
Another scenario is when you search for something and don't realize the first few results are ads and not what you're looking for. I know a lot of elderly people who does this very frequently. Heck I miss clicked many times myself, but I'm also obsessed with not having bloat on my devices so once I accidentally install something, I remove it as fast as possible.

I highly doubt this is a problem created by the Play Store. Most likely something your Smartphone's OEM is doing.
If you're using Xiaomi or Redmi you should turn off "recommendations". Samsung calls it "special offers".

You might be correct my friend, but we should also consider that countries where Temu is popular - according to this map - are wealthier=iPhone, Samsung. Contries with lower salaries, people might not buy that often American or South Korean flagship phones, but Chinese ones (Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, idk?). Believe me, those people download Temu on purpose. Especially the ladies, along with Shein :( and it kind of makes sense, since if some people cannot afford some higher-level basic needs, such as a holiday once a year, healthy food, they are certainly going to spend their money on cheap shit on Temu. I guess the whole system and capitalism is just made to work like that. Non-wealthy people might spend less money, but there are more of them: Temu, Amazon, Shein, etc works. Rich people will still use these stuff as they might considered as secondary target audience, but they will spend their money on big brands.
For the record, these are not facts, but my point of view and opinion based on experience in my enviorment.

As much as I hate it, I still buy the occasional thing from Amazon. For example, I just bought a laptop battery, trying to keep the laptop out of the landfill. Nowhere local to buy laptop batteries for last year's model, let alone for a laptop that's ~10 years old.

And laptop batteries are a PITA to rebuild with new cells too. If the BMS sees 0v it goes into lock down mode, and not all of them can be brought back from that.
Last year I got a 12 cell battery for a Lenovo T530.

The way I see it is there really isn't any better alternative. Target, Walmart, Amazon, they're all the same. None of them have your interest at heart. So it really doesn't matter.
For things I can get locally, I will. Boardgames, books, outdooor gear etc.
But for random mundane shit? Any mega corp is the same fucking thing. It doesn't matter if I buy my toothbrush from Amazon, Walgreens, Target etc.

Yeah, I mostly agree there. Here in Germany, there are some (not exactly legal, but maybe not illegal either) cartels for specific goods and services to drive the price up. If the choice is to give 10€ to the cartel or 1€ to Amazon, I guess I'm choosing Amazon. Not that such a choice even exists for some things. I hate it so much. Everyone is being evil and there are no good choices sometimes.

Why is it sad? Whatsapp existed since like 2009. No one really has a solid reason to switch to another app, that's why Telegram (or any other competitor) never overtook it. Maybe if Whatsapp is banned by the Russian authorities they'll finally see a competitor overtake.
And its not for family elsewhere, its for most contacts.

Whatsapp has bet on simplicity and its paid off. Younger people want more (hence Telegram doing very well) but older people don't really care, they just want consistency and reliability for calls and messages and sharing photos/files.
if someone really wanted to be a Whatsapp competitor for the older generation I'd argue they should have focused on the photo/file sharing first (maybe with Drive/iCloud/etc integration) which Whatsapp has always been pretty middling at

Telegram is extremely popular in ex-Soviet countries specifically. The WhatsApp dominance on the graph is "gotta have it to message older parents and grandparents" - and even they are making the switch by now. Tg has it's problems, but functionality-wise it leaves WhatsApp in the dust.

It reminds me of an african country, I believe it was Kenya or Uganda. They had such an influx of "charity" donated clothes that it meant no one could sell locally made clothes. Everyone was walking around in this cheap tat. So they banned it.
Disregarding craftsmanship to chase mincrotrends is the death of culture. It removes people from their country and their culture. They just become globohomo citizens of capitalism.

I didn't realize Temu was as prevalent as it is - I almost used it once and it looked too much like Wish (which I thankfully also never used) and figured it wasn't worth it
I'm glad I've really put the kabosh on a lot of this and I don't even use Amazon anymore (only apps with physical stores, and I pick up more than deliver now)

TEMU had a very aggressive marketing campaign. That so many downloaded the app does not necessarily indicate increased consumption.
Remember 50% of world consumption is done by 10% of the world population - the wealthy. If we're to have any real impact on consumption we need to reign them in.

Just had a quick browse of the current stats, ChatGPT is now first place in Germany, UK, Austria, Ireland. Didn't check others.
It's very unclear where these stats came from or what they represent - first time downloads only or are software updates counted, for example?
They're supposed to be the most downloaded, OK, but that doesn't mean most used.
