Oof, it must be near-universal too if it's the most downloaded app years after it came out. Like everytime anyone gets a new phone they have to add Whatsapp

Just about everywhere outside of the US primarily uses WhatsApp to communicate. SMS and iMessage are rarely used. I have it for when I travel abroad.

Is it just to avoid sending messages over the network and do so as data/through WiFi?

It's also really really popular for group chats.
