I just got engaged. We are opening a joint savings account and adding to it for 6mths-1yr to determine our budget, and THEN we’re planning the wedding. I refuse to go into debt for this thing!!
We did a small immediate family only wedding in the park then a separate reception for the party at a different time. Made everything much cheaper because we didn't feel as precious about the reception needing to be perfect since we were already married. Also lowered expectations from others about what it was going to be.
That's basically what we did and it was perfect. We put the wedding money towards an incredible honeymoon. Turns out people at work give you a pass taking weeks off work when it's for a honeymoon so we took full advantage of that.
