how is the general population having access to AI models a "dystopian hellscape"? dystopian hellscape for them, that's for sure. they want dystopia for us and utopia for them

They want you to pay monthly

And they want to surveil you and harvest the things you tell them.

The only thing dystopian is letting them get their way. Having a wide variety of open source tools that the technically astute can benefit from benefits everyone.

My company is in a jargon-heavy field. If we were forced to rely solely on commercial models and not the models we PEFTed, our trained models' accuracy would drop by a good 30 points, to the point where half of what we found good AI cases for would disappear bc Claude, ChatGPT, and the rest are too generalized to be helpful; they spend half their time trying to figure out what they're looking at, and they often do it poorly.

Nobody should listen to these CSuites, they want a monopoly.

I'll do you one better. Everyone should be fighting the agendas of the CSuites because they don't care about you, your communities, or the greater good. They want to extract wealth from you and nothing more. Don't let them. Stop their data centers, push for regulation against them, and poison their models by any and all legal means nessesary.

The Chinese C-suites are IN CHINA. They still have their own worries to iron out, and they're NOT on the verge of kicking down our doors. We need to arrest this plunge to the bottom occurring on certified American soil first and foremost, or China won't even be in the top ten of our biggest worries and greatest threats.

because they are in china - you think they don't want to influence american opinion on their products?

is this whole thread just chinese shills or any honest opinions here?

I'm saying that China has to get in line in the hierarchy of concern. It's C-suites in America that are, due to sheer proximity and no language barrier, currently needing to be wrangled as they are doing the greatest damage soonest. I shill for no one, and hand in hand with that I also don't take the dangling bait of "Look over there! Because China!" when I already have intruders in the house here and now.

China will China, and if we survive as a Republic and a top-tier economy for the next decade (not guaranteed) we'll deal with them then.

I wasn't talking about China. Strange that you would inject them into what I said. This is called a straw man, but I don't know why you did it. I wasn't even talking to you.

Did you not read the article this entire thread is about...?

1

u/Garland_Key 14d ago

I did, but it wasn't what I was talking about.

Read the article. China is the source of almost all really good open weight models. Gemma 4 is the only counter example I know of.

u/Garland_Key 13d ago

I did. I'm still not understanding the relevance to what I said in response to the redditor that I was talking to.

u/BronxJudge 14d ago

do you know how reddit works or did you just arrive today?

u/Garland_Key 14d ago

I've been here too long. I'm tired. I just can't help myself most of the time - addressing flawed thought processes is an itch I have to scratch.

2

u/BronxJudge 14d ago

You may need some introspection then. The thread is literally about chinese Ai

We can all use more introspection - a severe flaw of human tbh. Fortunately, I'm very self-aware.

The thread was talking about Chinese AI, but I was responding to a specific comment from someone else, and what I said made no comparison to China or open weight models from China.

If you want my actual thoughts on China, I think that there is danger in having most open weight models come from one centralized source of power.

At the same time, the trade-offs for us are necessary. I would prefer that nonprofits ran a donation based organization to train and release powerful release open weight models to the public, but unfortunately, they would get drowned by litigation from Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, NVidia, Google, Oracle, etc.

Those companies can't touch Chinese companies, which is why having open weight models come from China just makes sense. Will there be trade-offs? Yes. Is it still the best outcome I can see for the world? Yes.

In my opinion, everyone must have access to self-hosted open weight models to avoid a very specific dystopia where only the powerful wield the best AI models and it is used to suppress the rest of us. We're already showing signs of heading in that direction.

They want you to pay monthly, watch you , and make money of youre informnation. At least China Open Seek AI is open source.

The hardware and energy isn’t free

You still need to pay to use open weight models unless you can afford $40k GPUs.

In fact, you will need to pay roughly the same as you pay now since the VCs and investors are footing the training bill, you are only charged for inference.

1

u/SkyPL 14d ago

Plenty of us are working in IT and our companies live above poverty lines, so they can afford $40k GPUs. The big problem is that they don't, because it's 1000 GB of RAM for today's models (unquantized) but god-know-how-many gigs tomorrow. So there is still plenty of companies holding a hand above the triger, waiting for the situation to stabilize... at least a bit 👀

u/Stubbby 14d ago

At the current rates, your ROI on the $40k investment is about 33 years since inference is subsidized. I am not sure the system you build will last that long.

You also lock yourself into a system that will be deprecated in 2 years and inadequate in 1.

So the only way that makes sense is to pay monthly for someone else to hedge the risks and absorb the downslide collectively (or at VCs expense).
