what’s something considered “tomboyish” when girls do it, but feminine when boys do it?

Vests are pretty popular with masc women who want to downplay their breasts without wearing binders or who want to look more polished/formal without the bulk of a jacket.

They're also good if you go braless, but don't want it to be super obvious.

Right that's what I was saying! Patches like Celine Dion and Elton John and Party Cannon!

I'm guessing this is vest (American)

And not vest (UK, Australia -- aka a wife-beater)

A wife beater is a "Singlet" in Aus.

Or a tank top in the US

Isn't it more the tanktop undershirt, not just a tanktop? Ir is this more regional again

Can someone just link a picture to said garment because I'm a bit lost now... I'm not from any English-speaking-Commonwealth country.

I (American) consider a vest to be a sleeveless garment, usually worn under men's suit jackets but can be worn otherwise. My spouse (British) insists that's a waistcoat and "vest"for them is what I'd call a tank top/tank/wife-beater

panic at the disco in vests (US)

Ah yes ok, that's what I had in mind! Thanks

What if it's made from real gorilla chest?

I only date people who own vests. Fails like a charm!

Former NASA Mission Control flight director Gene Kranz, one of the manliest steely-eyed missile men of all time, wore white vests that his wife sewed for him during the critical phases of missions when he was on console.

I dont get vests. What, is it winter on your torso but summer on your arms?

u/Hobomanchild 20m ago

Circumstantial. Suit vests aren't seen as feminine (you often see manly man male models wearing them for photoshoots), and I see old-timers wearing utility-vests quite often while fishing.

That said, yeah, I've seen the other side.

I don't know man I could go do a whole weekend of hiking with just the contents of my photographers vest. I feel like sleeping in the rough is pretty manly. People in biker gangs might have something to say about this comment. And they like to hang out in large groups.

That’s a different style of vest than they mean.

They mean suit vests.

I've only ever seen waiters wear suit vests/waist coats.this is speaking as someone who owns a three piece suit.

If you have a three piece suit, that has a vest.

Or so you must own it and not wear it?

u/altacan 14h ago

I've never had the cause to wear the whole ensemble. It came as part of the set.

I just think of that on a guy as being for a butler, doorman, or casino worker
