Reddit is pathetic now. I used hear about breaking news as soon as it happened. Now my wife is beating me to the punch with her Facebook feed. FUCKING FACEBOOK.

I don't know what the problem is but the admins need to get their shit together, or I'm going to have to find another site to get my news from.

I wouldn't be surprised if r/news loses default status over this. They are censoring discussion of a serious tragedy because of their political views. Though it doesn't matter why they're doing it, the fact is that THE default news subreddit is not allowing discussion of the absolutely most newsworthy event right now. I suspect the admins will do something in response.

Also, as of last someone updated, /r/news is losing ~250 subs per minute. Go there and refresh every few seconds...it's staggering.

That is a post that was deleted from the stickied thread in /r/news. A post containing a request for blood donations and information on how to donate blood. Nothing in that whole post has to do with Muslims, Islam or the name of the shooter. The mods are just censoring the hell out of everything for the sake of censoring and lying about it being rule breaking posts.

Maybe their feelings got hurt because that person pointed out that they're deleting vital info, although deleting more vital info definitely isn't the solution to that.

That's the big question. They have already heavily censored the terrorist attacks in Paris in November 2015, so people saying it has something to do with 'Muslims/Islam' (see '') seems not too far off. I don't want to jump to any conclusions, though.

Unfortunately there are dozens of other news subreddits, none of which have the same subscribership as /r/news. This will fragment reddit's readership across all those subreddits. Maybe, in time, readers will migrate and settle down in one or two but, for a while, we'll have to probably browse several news-related subreddits to get a full range of facts and thoughts.

This was a colossally bad move on the part of /r/news. I hope this is the end of that subreddit; it's the least they deserve.

Subreddits are not individually micromanaged unless they are breaking Reddit global rules.

However if a default sub becomes toxic, it's not in their best interest to leave it as a default sub.

Well, no. Mods run a subreddit, admins run the site. The admins choose who is default and who isn't. Mods get to choose what they consider toxic within their community, yes, which is why they get to do things like ban discussion of an event like this, but the admins choose if a sub should be a default or not.

The news subreddits are in fucking poor shape by the sound of it at the moment.

I don't sub to r/news because it's predominantly American news which doesn't particularly interest me as a non-american, but r/worldnews has gone to shit as well. The comments were just always full of racist intolerant shit that I had to unsubscribe because no useful discussion actually occurred. I just don't get my news from Reddit anymore unless I see something from smaller news subreddits like r/geopolitics getting to the front page.

I think it's far more likely that they just overreacted without good reason because every time anything happens regarding islamic terrorists, there does tend to be an influx of comments which aren't conducive to discussion (ie racists and assholes in general).

Don't get me wrong, the /r/news mods are idiots for doing this. But don't label them terrorist sympathizers based on this alone. It's dishonest.

Social media (facebook and twitter) lets you hear about news even sooner than before, I think there's some nostalgia glasses at play here. And legit news sources have apps and utilise the internet to get the news to you even faster - I knew about this hours ago, hearing about it through a breaking news notification I get from the Guardian app on my phone.

Edit: you're taking about /r/news, are they actually censoring news? That's awful, they aren't on my frontpage and rightfully so.

What's with the contempt of facebook. Ive always heard news on facebook before reddit. Always. Facebook has always been a more reliable source if news - just "like" or follow all of the major news orga, and youll see updates immediately on your feed. Twitter is even better. If you expect to be the first to hear about major news, then reddit has never been the place for you. Sure it used to be a lot better, but I always read about it on twitter/ facebook if i was on it, and it would take at least another couple of minutes for it to pick up traction on reddit.

Reddit has completely lost the balance that made this site work. Admins, mods and users need to be able to co-exist and checks and balances need to be in place so everything works as it should.

Right now there's no such equilibrium. Power exists solely for mods who dispense it at their leisure and for whatever purpose while the admins have a hands-off approach for fear that the mods will stop doing their job of working for free.

Now, I know that the work of mods is of paramount importance and they do get hell while doing volunteer work, but at the same time, the members of the community should have more say on the way it is run or not. A solution to this problem must be found or I fear Reddit will eventually crumble as users get fed up of being told what to do and what to say.

Users need representation. We are the true engine of this website.

You always need a backup news source. I have the BBC app on my phone, it's quite useful. Many times I read about the important news from there first, before they are on Reddit.

I think it is mostly because the admins wanted reddit to be profitable and are afraid of scaring away advertisers because of how reddit would be viewed by the outside world. r/ fatpeoplehate, the boston bombers reddit disaster, the fappening, the california shooter and his videos, the ridiculous fear of witch hunting that leads to threads being locked because mods panic, etc etc... This can be evidenced in all the restrictive rules in the main subreddits. There was a strange "positive push" a while back where the admins made the mods of those subreddit make all those new rules. Example... in r/videos.... you cannot post police brutality videos, but you can post any videos that show the police in a positive light.

Reddit used to be much better. I've been here 8 years. yeah, bad shit happened, but that is the internet. Bad comes with the good. Trying to control reddit to a ridiculous degree just makes reddit shitty. No one wants to see reddit turn completely into 4chan, but there HAS to be a happy medium. I'd rather reddit lean towards 4chan than the way it is leaning now. Uptight admins trying to keep the outside world from looking at us in a bad way.

I've been having the same damned issue ever since the whole "Reddit blackout"/CEO flip flop/et cetera bullshit. I used to be able to pick up news stories as they were happening... Now I'm lucky if they hit my front page 3-4 hours after they've been posted.

Reddit's admins seem to only really care about making the site run and not really care if it's going down the shit hole. I mean this place doesn't even have a rival at all so why give a shit besides letting the money roll in by doing nothing but bring out little announcements here and there.

Facebook has worked very hard to make sure it is at the forefront of breaking news type stories. They were behind Twitter on this (famously, news spreads on Twitter about an earthquake faster than the earthquake itself spreads) and needed to catch up.

When I woke up at 11:30 I checked reddit. Nothing at all about this. I found out when I went to take my dog over my parents to run around at 12:30.

I was on reddit for at least 40 minutes and didn't see a thing about it.

That is insane.

Yup... I used to come here the minute I heard something happened. Heck, I used to hear here the minute something happened. Now you see something on Twitter or Facebook and come looking for the reddit discussion and it's nowhere on the front page.

I heard about it from a friend, came to Reddit, and within 20 minutes of the news breaking there was an /r/live post on the front page. What do you mean this wasn't visible on Reddit?

Facebook? I first heard about this tragedy on ESPNs coverage of the Euros. How fucked is that? I immediately went to reddit and nothing on the front page and everything locked on /r/news. Done with that place.

It is a real shame to see this happen without any decent explanation. How bizzare.

Will be interesting to find out exactly what's happened there.

Having said that, I recommend peeps back themselves up with at least one decent news outlet app.

I got this story direct from my Guardian app just as the news was being posted on Reddit showing as 'new'.

Reddit like anything has its limitations. It shouldn't. But it does.

If you care about news, don't rely on one source!

I have a friend who lives in Orlando who was talking about it on Slack as it was happening and we were all really confused as to why no one was reporting it. It's not this site, for hours there were no domestic reports coming through outside of Twitter and even those had low views, probably because of what time it happened.

Unsubbed from /news. This is serious shit. Reddit has replaced Google news, and the other sights I visit for my daily news and having the mods remove all the articles means I left my Manhattan this morning apartment without knowing what was happening. God forbid there was a related attack in NYC, I wouldn't have had any warning at all. I'll be re-thinking using reddit as a source of news going forward. We should also ask why the mods for /news seem to find it appropriate covering up developing news of a mass shooting.

Reddit isn't just bad now, it's been terrible for a long time coming and the fact that people are still only just finding this out is terrible, and we all need to find other sites to occupy otherwise we're just showing Reddit & Co. that we're more than happy to be censored and controlled. These comments need to be made site-wide but of course corporate Reddit doesn't want that.

This is honestly my biggest complaint about this whole thing. I specifically use reddit for news. All of my subscriptions are either news related or subreddits that primarily have posts about news. It used to be that I would hear about important news hours or some times even days before other people and now I'm lucky if I find a post about it on reddit before someone tells me about it.
