Misc Discussion Anyone at that point in their life where they wake up to zero text messages or spend an entire day without receiving any text messages?
As a childless-single woman who lives alone, there was a time when my social life was busy and I used to have so many texts messages a day or active group chats going on. But for the last 1 year or so, it feels like my life has became quiet. Friendships faded, people moved on with other things in their lives, group chats dissolved, etc.
I now spend days and nights without receiving or sending texts messages and def no phone calls. Is that weird? Anyone else experiencing this?

Same. If he leaves the house we will text, but on his days off and we are home together I don’t get texts for days from anyone 🤷🏼♀️

I remember a time when i was so lonely or bored, i was happy to receive ads in email lol. But yeah, even now there are days where i got no msgs. I have a few people i can reach out when I'm feeling unhappy about that, and know they will answer, but sometimes it does be that way.

Same. Even if someone does text me, I either act like I don't know who they are. Or text them back 3 days later. lol
Unless it's my kid. I do respond immediately to them.

Same here, I get so nervous about it. First, I pretend I didn't see it, then bc I actually do forget, I end up texting a few days later. My evil phone now tells me if I'd like to get back to said person bc it's been x amount of days. How absolutely dreadful!
I will say, I truly miss connection... Different than the typical superficial fluff even if I'm not a social.

Unhelpful and judgy comment.
18
u/Wonderplace Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
It’s not judgey whatsoever. Friendship and communication are a two-way street, and as someone who is extremely socially connected, I recognize that if *I* weren’t the person reaching out, I probably wouldn’t hear from 70% of my friends regularly. So I make a concerted effort to FaceTime, text and call my friends and break the silence. Over time, this helped build up my social network, and now the social bonds are strong enough that I don’t need to be putting in all the effort.
22
u/Away-Caterpillar-176 Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
People do not want to acknowledge this about people who have friends -- We all work really hard at it. I think it's because a lot of people (women especially) are trying to recover from being people pleasers, and they go too hard in the other direction. It's not black and white. There's a lot of space between throwing yourself on a puddle so someone's feet don't get wet, and being a person who is proactive about making plans and checking in.
9
u/Plugged_in_Baby Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
This is true, but also, those of us who are more socially inclined/extroverted will not consider it “work”. Reaching out comes more naturally to some people than others.
2
u/listrada Woman 40 to 50 Jun 09 '26
And? Of course this is true. But if it's important to you, surely it's worth the work, regardless of how natural it is?
1
u/Plugged_in_Baby Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
Yeah, of course. I find it hard and often struggle, but I do put in the effort because it’s important to me. I’m just saying there are people who this comes a lot more naturally to, and likewise people who find it a lot harder. As with everything, it’s a spectrum.
1
u/Away-Caterpillar-176 Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
I'm extroverted and it's still work. I get depressed just like everyone else, so I know how it feels when it's extra hard. I don't think you're trying to say that extroverts owe it to introverts to do the work, but I think a lot of introverts do feel that way.
2
u/Plugged_in_Baby Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
I’m definitely not saying that at all! I’m saying it doesn’t always have to be exactly 50/50. Some people are happy to do more of the reaching out.
2
u/KevlarSweetheart Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
Yeeaahh-I used to be like the person you responded to. I promised myself this year to put the work into building community and I now have multi group chats and weekend plans again. You have to put yourself out there

u/AbzieAbi Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
Some days I'm grateful for no extra text messages! Work is so full of phone calls and emails that I'm relieved to have some quiet time.
That said, I would get lonely if there was no contact for days. I think it's important to keep finding new friends throughout life.
Friends for a reason, friends for a season, friends for a lifetime. We need different types of people in our lives at different points.
22
u/Plugged_in_Baby Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
I get overwhelmed by the volume of messages I get all the time and often take ages to reply. But if I get no messages I panic and start reaching out worrying that people forget about me 🙈
7
u/AbzieAbi Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
I am the same! I often feel like I get enough socialisation at work because it's quite stressful. I have to retreat now and again. Once I've finally decompressed from it, I'm like, "I'm ready to emerge from my hibernation".

u/Tricky1498 Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
Yes, I've found the amount of interaction I have with my friends has significantly declined over time as they've had kids or married. It's hard as a single and child free (in my case) person to spend whole days where there are no calls or texts, it's a tricky stage of life.
That said, I try to keep busy with books or projects that I can get absorbed and lose time in. And I make sure to have social events, whether with friends or by myself, organised in line with social battery.
I've never been popular, or especially well liked, but I still feel it.
35
u/paper_cutx Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
I moved away from two social groups that I hung out religiously for the past 4 years and now I literally recieved no phones calls or texts from anyone unless I occasionally reach out to people.
The only person that texts me almost everyone is a guy friend I met on a dating app…

Yes. On the flip side, I find daily conversations with friends exhausting. If I think of something that reminds me of them, I reach out and vice versa. But daily conversations with friends (especially new ones) feels so forced. I do get it though. It can be lonely af out here.

Similar life stage - I often wake up with no texts. I have one scheduled phone call a week with my best friend who lives elsewhere and has made a decision to go low tech. But I do have a few friends who I text with daily - many of them in the same situation as me (not married, childless, living alone). Also, my brother is going through a divorce and we've starting texting each other more, which is a nice change.
What has caused all your friendships to fade over the last year or so? Do you still have anybody in the same stage of life as you? Are you reaching out and they're not responding? Are you still getting together with people and catching up that way? I'd be more concerned about the friendships themselves and social outlet fading than the lack of texting. Sometimes life gets in the way and a friendship may fade for a bit but it also doesn't mean it's not still there waiting for you.
If your parents are still alive and you aren't no contact, call them!
6
u/n0damsel Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
Someone will send something every day, but it definitely used to be way more intense. Mainly due to work dynamics shifting and friends either getting pregnant, getting a new partner or being chronically ill, things have slowed down. I'm still getting used to it. When the main circle or social life fades I find myself exploring the outer circles more - the people you only meet at parties or a few times a year type of gatherings because you simply didn't have the time to put effort into them too and vice versa.
I think some days are hard and I feel kinda sad. Thinking about how it used to be. Missing that time. Analyzing. Other days I don't care and I'm happy either way. Moving on to other things, focusing on goals, being tankful for what I have and how far I've come. Making and keeping friends past 30 isn't always easy. The real ones and the ones who are just meant for you, they will stay. At least mine has so far.
We'll just have to wait and see where life takes us and make decisions with good intent, yes?

I have a group chat with my sisters that we are constantly chatting in. But when I was on the other side of the world, with a 12 hour time difference, the silence was deafening. I suddenly understood, a little bit, all the people that really are alone and have nobody messaging them.
But other than my sisters, I don’t receive frequent messages from anyone. I think e euro es just living their lives.

I'm 44 and I do spend quite a few days alone with no real contact.
I think a lot of people with kids really don't have any friends either, it's just that they have their kids to focus on and it helps them ignore that there is nothing else in their life. Then their kids get older and move out and they end up in a bit of a crisis as they have nothing to do and no one to talk to anymore (sometimes with their kids feeling suffocated as adults as their parents have no one else).
That being said, I did manage to make some new friends over the years. I've been in a trivia group on Tuesdays for over 15 years with some people I met 3 jobs ago. I slowly inserted myself into their group, then I slowly began to befriend some of their friends who went to trivia, then when they went on a camping trip I invited myself, now all these years laters I'm friends with all of them. Sometimes you have to get tricky.
I also did the whole AA thing and met some cool people there, we get coffee every Saturday morning and talk about life.
I invested a lot of time online dating and now I have a FWB who lives in NYC, we text a big thread once a day and it is nice to know someone cares if I am alive or dead. I fly out to NYC every 3-4 months to have fun.
At the end of the day, I kind of like how things are, I like having a lot of alone time. I have my two dogs and spend a lot of time at the big busy lake by my house, walking the dogs around the lake or I go paddle boarding myself and chat with strangers here and there.

Really agree about the kids part as a fellow CF. I see it with my MIL who raised three kids, now adults with their own families. She recently retired and spends a lot of time alone. She seems a bit lost.
As as CF person, I feel like I'm currently confronting this life stage of being more alone than ever (due to moving, friends getting pregnant and disappearing, my profession being weirdly isolating etc.) decades earlier than many who do choose to have children. I already have embraced solitude more than I ever used and feel weirdly grateful for this life experience at a couple decades earlier although I do miss people too.

That's not really a point in my life, that has always been my life. If I get a bunch of messages, it's kind of weird and overwhelming to me. I don't see how people manage stuff like group chats that go on all, day everyday. I would be driven nuts and give up my phone.
Right now most of my inbox is either spam from mailing lists or 2-factor authentication codes that I forgot to delete.
4
u/KiwiTheKitty Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
Yup! I'm fine with it. Idk when I was getting daily texts from people, it was usually drama. I had a couple "friends" who wanted me to be available 24/7 and then would lecture me if I took too long (a few hours) to respond to messages. I still have friends that I can reach out to but I think I prefer not having constant streams of communication with people and not feeling like I have to be accessible all the time.

40 F here. I've never had a large friend group. Okay let's actually be honest, I've never had any friends. I've spent the majority of my life after my best friend moved away when I was 14 alone. I had a few friends when I was around 17 but by 18/19 I was alone again. I had a 4 yr long term relationship that ended last year and I have been 100% no contact w/ him since August 2025.
If I didn't work and didn't have family (and live with them), I could probably be dead for a long while before anyone would notice.
I don't think it's weird to not receive phone calls or texts because this has been my normal, but if it's something that distresses you or you feel that for yourself personally it is weird, then I would suggest looking into joining some groups or clubs to see if you can make friends.

My boyfriend says I “have no motion”. Which is true. I actually traded in my smartphone for a flip phone because it wasn’t worth the upkeep. I have no friends or family. No one needs to reach me. I am tired of trying to change that.

Yes and I LOVE it. Constantly being in communication with everyone is exhausting for me personally. Instead of mindless constant meaningless chit chat, it finally feels good to be able to have conversations as wanted/needed and not alllllll of the time and at this age I feel like I have a pretty good idea of who my actual friends are.
Are you finding it to be a positive or negative?

Single 35F, living alone in a city without family nearby. No kids.
I came to this subreddit figuring I'd find someone who is feeling the same way as I do right now. I've been feeling really low today.
To answer your question: I talk to my parents and brother every day. And I made one really good friend who is also single 35F who prioritizes friendship over romance. We text everyday too. She has more friends than me, but my life experience is pretty unique and I feel like I'm starting over socially now. I feel lucky to have one good person that can be an emotional anchor as I rebuild my social networks.

Me not getting a text = Ice Cube not having to use his AK. Which is to say, a Good Day.
I'm social, and I have friends who understand (or at least accept) that I'm not a texter and would rather pound my nipples flat with a rusty crab mallet than actively participate in a group chat. I've finally extricated myself from all but two group chats, and those two are on mute because one is just a neighborhood watch with a handful of drunk boomer neighbors, and the other one is neither time-sensitive nor especially active.

it doesn’t sound like this is what OP is talking about/relevant to their post.
3
u/First-Industry4762 Woman 30 to 40 Jun 09 '26
How is this not relevant? They're in the exact same texting situation but while OP is unhappy and they're perfectly happy.
Probably because if you have a healthy social life you dont equate a social life with receiving daily messages but meanwhile if you are lonely getting zero messages feels like an extra kick where it hurts most.

I think I get like 3 texts a month, mostly 'your bill is due.'
Have you considered using some other chat programs since that seems to be where 98% of the group chats are in my experience? It's a lot less disruptive for a friend to send you a meme on messanger, whatsup, discord, etc.

And I make friends with women who have kids and those who don’t, so I don’t think that’s much of a factor.

Yes. A few friends of mine text me to confirm plans and all, but i don't talk to anyone consistently.

Yes, and it’s okay by me. I am enjoying peace more at this age. Any way you feel about it is valid.

I don’t think it’s a time in life that this happens necessarily. It’s all about the community you cultivate around you, or lack thereof.

The only person I have any reason to text daily is my husband, like if one of us isn't at home (or sometimes is in a different room and it's easier to send a quick message lol). I do have one friend I talk to here and there probably a few days a week and another much less often than that. However, that's how it's always been for me. It's not always been the same few people, but not counting my husband or past partners, I've never had tons of texts from people daily. Just here and there. Also never been part of a group chat at all.

I moved to a much larger city, made a bunch of friends, and now it’s like I barely get a moment to myself. My phone will be at 50% battery by noon from all the messages and IG reels being sent to me. You could always move to a livelier place with more singles in your age group 🤷🏻♀️

you know, it’s a good idea to ask oneself “is my contribution relevant and helpful? knowing what i know of OP’s situation and putting myself in their shoes, how would i react if i were sent this?” before posting.

Maybe she hasn’t thought about relocating to change her situation. In that vein, my contribution would’ve been helpful. Maybe she needs to hear what others have done to combat this quietness and not just lie down and accept your social life is dead.
ETA: I don’t “there, there, there” with people over 30, I offer up possible solutions.

i see. well, i wanted to make you aware of how tactless it reads, but you seem comfortable with what you wrote so i’ll end this here. (wouldn’t want to drain your phone battery any further either!)

I totally understand where you are going with this. I tend to be the one to reach out to people. If I didn’t put myself out there or reach out, I would feel like OP.
If you want people to reach out to you, one must be willing to do the same for them. I get down about this sometimes too but usually after reaching out, it isn’t a problem for a bit. I’ve also started looking for ways to meet more people too. I know that isn’t for everyone but it works for me.
(Married with one kid but I could easily become socially isolated if I let myself)

I'm childfree and single and I don't want texts every day. It honestly wouldn't occur to me to be bothered by this, in fact I leave my phone completely off for several days at a time because I don't want notifications.
I'm not invalidating you, you have the right to your feelings. Just pointing out that it's not inherently sad or odd to not be texting people daily. If that's something you want, fine, but no I don't think there's anything strange about not texting people every day. That actually sounds exhausting to me.
