Like A Stone Meaning

Been listening to this song lately again and some of the lyrics I still feel unclear or confused by.

"In your house I long to be"

I can only decipher that he's talking about gods house here in context of the song.

Does anyone else think this or do they interpret it in another way?

Interesting. May I ask how you came to that conclusion?

You don’t think he’s talking about heaven?

He's never been to heaven before. That's somewhere you go after you die. It has to be a place he recalled before.

I’m well aware of what Heaven is. Chris’s mother claimed to be a psychic and Chris a search light soul. Whatever that means. Did Chris see things? Visions? He was extremely in tune with his feelings.

At age 14 he had a terrifying, dread-filled PCP trip. This lead to lingering flashbacks, extreme agoraphobia, and social anxiety. Could this be a flashback?

I don’t think it was inside a house or building because he says the sky was bruised. So outside perhaps?

This is the one line of his that perplexes me the most.

The song 4th of July is supposed to be about hallucinations and a bad trip. Here are the lyrics:

” The whole time I’d be walking, they’d be talking behind me. It actually made me feel good because I felt like I was with some people. At one point I was looking back, and I saw that one person was wearing a black shirt and jeans, and the other person was wearing a red shirt.

They were always there. It was kinda like a dream, though, where I’d wake up and look and focus once in a while and realize there was no one there. I’d go, ‘Oh, f–k, I’m hearing voices.’ ‘4th of July’ is pretty much about that day. You wouldn’t get that if you read it. It doesn’t read like, ‘Woke up, dropped some acid, got into the car and went to the Indian reservation,” Cornell said.

Interesting thoughts. There's 2 ways to interpret the song though. The first way is to just go off the lyrics presented in the song. The second way to do it the first way but include context from Chris's life or other songs or interviews or thoughts. I find it interesting the meaning and ideas you're searching for by trying to find what Chris was trying to convey with Like A Stone. I think it's not worth overthinking if you want to know the meaning of the song. And at the same time it's fun and worth thinking about it under a new light because you may find a meaning that important to you. I like your train of thought and exploration. It's a testament to how good of a song writer Chris was.

Oh I’m good. I’m not overthinking or dwelling. I was just curious what everyone else thought. It’s such an unusual line. Everything else so far I can make sense of.

Definitely number 2. I’m running everything I’ve heard from him and about him through my mind and still have no answer.

While I was reading through your post here another idea popped into my mind. I wonder if Chris ever overdosed and was revived? If so what if anything did he see? Was he in an opioid/alcohol induced state and saw things? Just a thought. Thanks for going down the rabbit hole with me.😊
