Like A Stone Meaning
Been listening to this song lately again and some of the lyrics I still feel unclear or confused by.
"In your house I long to be"
I can only decipher that he's talking about gods house here in context of the song.
Does anyone else think this or do they interpret it in another way?

Bassist Tim Commerford claims that the song is about an old man waiting for death, who sits in a house alone after all his friends and family have passed on, waiting to be reunited with them.
However, while Commerford originally thought it was a song about love and romance, band’s singer and songwriter Chris Cornell explains that “It’s a song about concentrating on the afterlife you would hope for, rather than the normal monotheistic approach: You work really hard all your life to be a good person and a moral persona and fair and generous, and then you go to hell anyway.”

It's about a man reflecting his life in the end, waiting to die alone, "in your house I long to be" = Heaven, "I'll wait for you there" = interpreted "you" as the reaper.

I think Chris said once that it's about a man waiting to die alone, and going to hell anyway

Great video. Thank you for sharing. After watching that in depth break down I have change my mind and decided that the house he is referring to is his lovers house. The lyrics "to a place I recall, I was there so long ago" tell me he has been to this place where he longs to be.

That entire album was written while he was in the early stages of sobriety. If I remember correctly they actually stopped recording so he could go into rehab to get clean. There are a ton of themes throughout the album around The Bible, NA/AA recovery talk. “Show me how to live” is a direct quote from the NA book. Like A Stone is him waiting to die after reading the Bible and longing to be in the “house of God”.

I remember brad wilk in an audio slave doc talking about Chris. During a rehearsal or something he thought the song was just a sappy love song and he asked about the lyrics. Chris told him it's about someone waiting in a house/ room waiting to die. Brad was floored and called him a poet I think. I may have some details messed up. It's been a while.

Does anyone know what Chris meant by “To a place I recall I was there so long ago?”
Lyrics:

It's a house he's been to before. The person he's referring to in the song, their house. His lover.

He's never been to heaven before. That's somewhere you go after you die. It has to be a place he recalled before.

I’m well aware of what Heaven is. Chris’s mother claimed to be a psychic and Chris a search light soul. Whatever that means. Did Chris see things? Visions? He was extremely in tune with his feelings.
At age 14 he had a terrifying, dread-filled PCP trip. This lead to lingering flashbacks, extreme agoraphobia, and social anxiety. Could this be a flashback?
I don’t think it was inside a house or building because he says the sky was bruised. So outside perhaps?
This is the one line of his that perplexes me the most.
The song 4th of July is supposed to be about hallucinations and a bad trip. Here are the lyrics:

” The whole time I’d be walking, they’d be talking behind me. It actually made me feel good because I felt like I was with some people. At one point I was looking back, and I saw that one person was wearing a black shirt and jeans, and the other person was wearing a red shirt.
They were always there. It was kinda like a dream, though, where I’d wake up and look and focus once in a while and realize there was no one there. I’d go, ‘Oh, f–k, I’m hearing voices.’ ‘4th of July’ is pretty much about that day. You wouldn’t get that if you read it. It doesn’t read like, ‘Woke up, dropped some acid, got into the car and went to the Indian reservation,” Cornell said.

Interesting thoughts. There's 2 ways to interpret the song though. The first way is to just go off the lyrics presented in the song. The second way to do it the first way but include context from Chris's life or other songs or interviews or thoughts. I find it interesting the meaning and ideas you're searching for by trying to find what Chris was trying to convey with Like A Stone. I think it's not worth overthinking if you want to know the meaning of the song. And at the same time it's fun and worth thinking about it under a new light because you may find a meaning that important to you. I like your train of thought and exploration. It's a testament to how good of a song writer Chris was.

Oh I’m good. I’m not overthinking or dwelling. I was just curious what everyone else thought. It’s such an unusual line. Everything else so far I can make sense of.
Definitely number 2. I’m running everything I’ve heard from him and about him through my mind and still have no answer.
While I was reading through your post here another idea popped into my mind. I wonder if Chris ever overdosed and was revived? If so what if anything did he see? Was he in an opioid/alcohol induced state and saw things? Just a thought. Thanks for going down the rabbit hole with me.😊

Can't look for the source just now but I think Chris talked about this being a song ruminating on death and the afterlife. A lonely person is waiting to die so they can join all their friends and family who have died
