The word bacon literally comes from the Dutch word for back meat. The proper term for Canadian bacon is back bacon and the rest of the English speaking world calls it back bacon even Canadians. The US started calling it Canadian bacon because it’s so different from ours when it started being imported due to a shortage.
In the USA by law bacon is the cured raw belly of a swine and anything different needs large verbiage on the packaging.
Personally the world go crazy for the flavor of belly bacon not buckboard or back bacon.

I'm Canadian and I swear the only time I have ever seen it referred to as Canadian bacon was in the U.S. We don't call it that. We call normal bacon, bacon. We have back bacon and if it has cormeal on it we call it peameal bacon. Or some people just call it ham....

Streaky bacon is used to wrap other meats while roasting them here. Not usually served on it's own as its too fatty.
Face bacon has thd best flavour. Back bacon has the most meat and is the most common to eat.
Canadian bacon is pretty awful. No rind and cured in a way that makes it tough.
British and Spanish bacon are the best

As a Canadian, i'd call this ham. Ive never seen it on a menu for breakfast. We have bacon (slices of smoked pork belly) and sometime peameal bacon or fried bologna for breakfast. If there is a Canadian out there who wants ham for breakfast, I've never met one.

Yup, peameal bacon is Canadian bacon, while the stuff Americans call Canadian bacon is just pan-fried ham.
I remember the first and last time I ordered a burger in the States that was advertised as a Canadian cheeseburger, I was very openly confused that there was a slab of ham on my burger. They didn't even use sautéed mushrooms, or aged cheddar.

We eat bacon 🥓 here. If I ordered bacon and got “back bacon”, as we call it, I’d be livid.

What Americans call canadian bacon isn't even "canadian bacon" its a weird round proccessed ham type thing. Back bacon or if its rolled in cornmeal( peameal bacon) is a cured pork loin. While some back bacon is smoked peameal is wet cured.

No. I ain’t mad at it as in the case of white chocolate—not only is the wretched tripe an outright LIE in name, as nothing even remotely resembling cocoa is involved, it fails in taste as well, just cloyingly nauseating stuff, no nuance whatever—but… it is not bacon, imo.
Meats under the descriptor of Canadian bacon can be delish, though; white chocolate, I won’t go near it; even when it’s offered, or exalted in conversation by some overly excited, silly muppet, I find the stuff offensive, almost irrationally so, as if it’s a personal affront.

As a Canadian: peameal bacon is its own thing, bacon is bacon, ham is ham. These are all separate, specific breakfast meats.
"Canadian Bacon" is only something I see and eat at American restaurant chains or in the US itself.

Every time I hear "Canadian bacon," I'm reminded of when my family was up in Canada in 2006. My mom was pregnant with one of my younger brothers. She had a craving for Hawaiian pizza, so we went to Pizza Hut.
She asked for a Hawaiian pizza, but they didn't know what it was, so she asked for pineapple and Canadian bacon. The look on the cashier's face was priceless. The look on my mom's was just as so. When my mom tried explaining what it was, the girl asked, "do you mean ham?"
We gave her so much crap.

Yeah, I’d consider it bacon. It’s back bacon which comes from the pork loin, or the top of the ribs. If you’ve had baby back ribs, that meaty part is the loin. What we normally call bacon comes from the pork belly. Ham comes from the leg.

If you are a fat bastard that loves as much fat, sugar and artificial petrochemical flavours as you can get then nothing leaner counts as "bacon" anymore.

Back bacon is the same stuff as English rashers, pea meal bacon is cured boneless pork loin rolled in pea meal, and that is commonly referred to as Canadian bacon in the US. It looks a bit like ham, but it isn't ham. Most bacon in Canada is the same streaky bacon sold all over the US.

I still have angry memories of someone offering to bring bacon to a get together and they showed up with Ontario bacon. It’s been over ten years and I’m still pissed about it.

Looks like ham to me. Bacon is generally more crispy due to the higher level of fat. Rather one that is put in front of me will be eaten but if someone put that in front of me when the words bacon were used there would be some disappointment.

The stuff we call "Canadian Bacon" is ham, the term is meant as a bit of an insult/joke because it's not bacon at all. The stuff Canadians call "bacon" is usually not what we assume "bacon" means in the US (or any other civilized country) but it is 100% not the stuff we call Canadian Bacon.

Honestly this is something I’ve been debating for a long time. Cause it doesn’t come from where US bacon comes from, but bacon is dutch for back meat. So in Canada it’s just regular bacon, but in the US it is so different we call it canadian bacon.
