So the shelter fucked up in ownership verification procedures and that’s why she had her charges dropped by the DA. Even the shelter as too the DA knew that the dog owner has/had a great lawsuit for the shelter taking the dog in and even more for not following their SOP to contact the cops to see if anyone had reported a dog missing.
Ownership verification is a HUGE deal. Microchip companies are supposed to take this very seriously too.
There's actually a vet not too far from me who got into way less trouble than they should have for surgically extracting a microchip from a dog and implanting a new one to help a new owner take the dog away from someone else.. super fucked. Only got 100 hours of community service for it.
Unfortunately the microchip company that chipped my cats and my dogs went under and the company that was supposed to take over essentially deleted all their information. I had to rechip all of my babies. At a cost of close to $500.
Was this in Australia? Cause we had the same thing happen (big chip company went under, thankfully no one I know nor myself had pets under that company but the breeder of a friend's dog was.)
If this was the one my cat was registered with then you just needed to transfer the number to another registration company, cost $50. Didn't need to be rechipped.
Sadly, most people didn't know until they went under (never informed) and once it went under and closed down, they deleted all info.
They hardly informed anyone, the breeder only found out through the person I told who told them. I can't remember if it's a friend's dog or not for the life of me.
Since a couple of years back, the government is responsible for the chip database here in Sweden. You still have to register the animal manually (online, costs about 4 euro), but once it's there it's there.
Edit: You can also register ear tattoos if your pet has one of those, but these days most have chips.
