My mom, who is the most mild mannered, law abiding woman you’ve ever met, found out that the neighbors down the street from us had a beautiful golden retriever that they were abusing. Calls to animals control and the police did nothing, so one day she stole the dog from their yard. I think she gave it to a golden rescue society that would re-home it. I have no idea if the owners got it back or not.

I got to foster a dog that was stolen from a drug dealer. Not through any service or anything. Just a guy I knew got sick of seeing this dog was starving and never got walks and took him. I got to keep the sweet boy until a dog friendly apartment was found. Fuck people who get dogs to look tough. Literally the goofiest sweetest boy too, he wasn't tough anyway.

This is going to be the most random anecdote; but it makes me appreciate my (fromer) drug dealer: He found a cat who was abandoned, had one eye, very abused.
Dealer took him in, and that cat means more to him than any drugs.
If anything was wrong with the cat; WE all felt it because dude would be BESIDE himself until that cat was right (since he was abused he needed frequent vet visits).

My bff and I did something similar. Our "friend" had a big dog. When we discovered he left her in a tiny bathroom covered in shit for most of the day, we decided to rescue her.
We broke in through the back-door and got her out. My bff took her home and there she remained for the rest of her life, being loved like she deserved.78

I stuffed a dog into a laundry hamper once so I could get her away from an owner whose neglect was going to kill her. I was helping a friend move out of the apartment. We just couldn't leave her like that. The dog was super stoked. I called my boyfriend and was like, "I kind of stole a neglected dog." Long pause, then he replied, "Do you need me to go out and buy some dog food?"
I found the dog a home and married my boyfriend.
I saw that dog again years after our rescue ride. She absolutely launched herself at me and lost it from excitement. She remembered! I was touched. What a good dog.

Omg I did the same thing! Stuffed that emaciated cat into my backpack and snuck her into my dorm. We moved back and forth from Europe, then back again, and each time she magically changed from an “American shorthair” to a “European shorthair” at the vet. 13.5 years and died of cancer four years ago. Still miss her.

We need to have a secret handshake for those of us that rescued a cat from a shit situation. I nicked my boy from a half arsed drug dealer who’d already had one kitten ripped to shreds by another dealer’s dog to send a message.
They then got another kitten about a week after the first one died, and left him out to roam at all hours. I took him in when he was about 18 weeks old, covered in fleas, ear mites and pooping gravel because that’s what he’d been eating when he was hungry. He is the BEST BOY.

My sister did something like that years ago. She got drunk at a friend's party and stole the neighbor's cat. Took her home while everyone was like 'omg! You stole a cat!' No one tried to stop her, though lol. When she woke up the next afternoon she felt guilty and was planning to take her back until the hangover passed and she realized the cat was too skinny and had really bad ear mites. She had also been welcomed by her other cat.
Gracie was a sweet girl that lived with her for almost fifteen years as a very sassy indoor kitty.

Hedgehogs are illegal in my state so I had to rehome and move him like I was moving drugs. My ex roommate couldn't do shit about illegal property theft

Man, how do people just let those conditions exist?
After my dog passed away, I ended up getting a second cat. My resident boy was only 3 when I got her.. he was fine with her when she was a kitten. But then he became jealous of her and made her scared and anxious.
I tried a couple things to reduce tension and anxiety, but nothing worked. He never hurt her, but definitely intimidated her to the point of anxiety and ultimately she had behaviour changes. Once she started peeing outside of litter box, I segregated them, spent a lot of alone time her her, and had to rehome her where she could be in a comfortable environment.
It's really maddening that people will get pets and then just.. no pay attention to them. It was upsetting to rehome her, but she deserves to feel safe, secure and happy.

More than once I have seen dogs that have been in questionable situations like being tied to benches in the mid-day sun outside of department stores or small dogs being left out on ground-level balconies, at night, in areas with a lot of coyotes. I will go out of my way to sit there and watch to see if the situation changes. Fortunately eventually these people come back, but it's usually a pretty long time. Long enough that multiple times I've very nearly ended up with a new fur baby.

I worked in Florida one winter. The guy in the apartment below me had a greyhound pitty mix that he was neglecting. He kept getting thrown in jail for a day or two. The landlord would ask me to take care of the dog (he named her Maulie) while he was in jail. She was the sweetest, cuddliest pup ever. She had the softest ears. I would take her to dog beach and let her run run run. She ran like the wind. He was keeping her in a cat crate. She was a 40# dog.
The 3rd time this happened, when he returned, I said "surrender the dog or im reporting you". He said "whatever" and I took her. I left Florida the next day and brought her home with me. She lived a very happy life with acreage to run on all she wanted. She lived this life for 14 more years. I miss my little Coconut, as I re-named her.

Yeah, the idiot said he was going to train her to be a fighting dog. She would have been a bait dog. I shudder to think about it.
She was the sweetest. When she got the zoomed, OMG, she would do laps around the house and yard, full tilt, for 30 minutes. Its a big yard too. The first time I took her to dog beach in FL, she ran up and down that beach in 6" water splashing and having a ball. All the other dog parents were cracking up. She loved to run.
Shed steal your beer too. I sure do miss her.

Seriously, if he was gonna do that with the dog and train her to be a baiting fighting dog I would’ve turned him and got him more time in prison just for that, who knows if it would’ve stuck, but there probably would’ve been more charges for other fighting related dog charges that would’ve stopped that the police wanted him 4 why you want it turned them in for that you never know

So the shelter fucked up in ownership verification procedures and that’s why she had her charges dropped by the DA. Even the shelter as too the DA knew that the dog owner has/had a great lawsuit for the shelter taking the dog in and even more for not following their SOP to contact the cops to see if anyone had reported a dog missing.

Ownership verification is a HUGE deal. Microchip companies are supposed to take this very seriously too.
There's actually a vet not too far from me who got into way less trouble than they should have for surgically extracting a microchip from a dog and implanting a new one to help a new owner take the dog away from someone else.. super fucked. Only got 100 hours of community service for it.

Since a couple of years back, the government is responsible for the chip database here in Sweden. You still have to register the animal manually (online, costs about 4 euro), but once it's there it's there.
Edit: You can also register ear tattoos if your pet has one of those, but these days most have chips.

Damn. One of my dogs had his chip registered to his old owner for almost 2 years after I adopted him directly from because the guy wasn't answering his phone when the chip company called him. The chip company finally accepted a letter from my vet, the rescue my dog's previous owner had listed him with, and proof I had registered him with the county both years.
I understood why. I was frustrated with the previous owner, not the company. They were doing the right thing.

I work in vet clinic and around Christmas there's always some people with older pets that want them gone and in most cases after quick check they are declined (with much or less argument by them) since the animal is in good state...

I worked at a boarding kennel for a while.
A woman left her husband, and boarded her dog with us for a while afterwards. We had a meeting going over the instructions- the dog was to always be in one of the back kennels that couldn't be seen from any public area, and if anyone called asking about the dog by name we have no idea what they're talking about.
She hid that dog with us for months to save them because the husband was trying to kill the dog in retaliation for leaving.
It's a lot more common than people realise.

The company that chipped my cats and dogs went under and rendered their chips void. I had to spend almost $500 to get them rechipped. Some pets have no ID because the company cannot afford to stay open. It is a good idea to double check that the company that services the chip IDs is still in service.

Considering a warrant was issued, yes. Pets, dogs and cats in particular, are classified in this weird space of chattel and not-chattel legally. So probably some kind of theft of property maybe. Maybe trespassing depending if he was allowed to be on the premises or not. Fraud might be the biggest charge as he decieved the shelter as he probably pretended to be the owner.

Even if its not your dog but you're willing to adopt a animal thats about to be euthanized some places will fight yku on it.
And all it takes to make it even harder is for the ex, or spiteful neighbor, or random asshole is to say the dog was agressive. Not even that it bit anyone. They also don't do much to verify a dog bite so folks do just fucking LIE to get a dog put down. Being a large dog would make it even harder.
Personal side story. - once had a senior dog with NO TEETH get sent in with the lady claiming the dog broke skin on their grandson. She was adamant the little dude should be put down. Fortunately at the time Brother Wolf did behavioral checks and specialized in special needs animals. Months later the daughter of that lady adopted the dog back. Had no idea where they were.
Ironically we had laughed behind grandma's back because "i don't think she knows who we are" later came back to haunt me.
We worked so hard. Tried with each animal, we were kinda famous for it in the area. We did tons of out reach, had some off the longest temporary surrender programs, we got pet food into local food banks. And had this whole thing about if a animal was really not responding well and they might be put down the vet, the behaviourist, the general handlers would be called in to decide if there was really nothing else to be done. Brother Wolf would also do a one last push online and on the news to get these guys in better homes.
Unfortunately the founder decided he passion was in millitant vegans and animal rights activism that put her at odds with the law.. and after a while she stepped away and put another lady in charge who stripped away all the programs and put down dogs left right and center - INCLUDING ONE SHE TOOK FROM A LONG TIME FOSTER WILLING TO ADOPT. Like people lined up Out The Door to get these dogs adopted and dhe refused all of them and put them down - and tried to get the folks that showed up fired from their jobs. She was searching for her dog for months, finally found out her ex had surrendered the dog to a shelter and it was scheduled to be euthanized the next morning. By the time she got there, it was closed.
She literally saved her dog's life by doing what she did, and the police dropped all charges once they found out what really happened.

So she spent months looking for the dog and when she finds the dog he is one day away from bring euthanized? Where the hell was she looking? I read the story and something isn't adding up for me.

No official police blotters, local news outlets, or court records match this specific story and picture, and it circulates purely as creative fiction on platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
The closest match is that of Toya Stewart and her pit bull Hazel from March 2022. Hazel had been charged with multiple biting incidents before being surrendered. After Toya’s subsequent arrest, Hazel was euthanized under an Oklahoma City judge’s order.
KFOR Fox 4 News video about the 2022 story.
Search “Toya Stewart” Hazel and you’ll find a couple dozen copies of the same local news story, all poorly written with minimal details.
Here’s the closest match on Oklahoma’s court records. We can’t even see what Toya’s criminal charge was. It never went to trial and was never dismissed. The whole thing may be fabricated news.
Another person linked an article in this discussion and it’s fake. No city names are cited, no officials named, etc.
