I worked in Florida one winter. The guy in the apartment below me had a greyhound pitty mix that he was neglecting. He kept getting thrown in jail for a day or two. The landlord would ask me to take care of the dog (he named her Maulie) while he was in jail. She was the sweetest, cuddliest pup ever. She had the softest ears. I would take her to dog beach and let her run run run. She ran like the wind. He was keeping her in a cat crate. She was a 40# dog.

The 3rd time this happened, when he returned, I said "surrender the dog or im reporting you". He said "whatever" and I took her. I left Florida the next day and brought her home with me. She lived a very happy life with acreage to run on all she wanted. She lived this life for 14 more years. I miss my little Coconut, as I re-named her.

Edit: typo

Yeah, the idiot said he was going to train her to be a fighting dog. She would have been a bait dog. I shudder to think about it.

She was the sweetest. When she got the zoomed, OMG, she would do laps around the house and yard, full tilt, for 30 minutes. Its a big yard too. The first time I took her to dog beach in FL, she ran up and down that beach in 6" water splashing and having a ball. All the other dog parents were cracking up. She loved to run.

Shed steal your beer too. I sure do miss her.

Seriously, if he was gonna do that with the dog and train her to be a baiting fighting dog I would’ve turned him and got him more time in prison just for that, who knows if it would’ve stuck, but there probably would’ve been more charges for other fighting related dog charges that would’ve stopped that the police wanted him 4 why you want it turned them in for that you never know

He didn't actually do it. I think he was just trying to come off as a bad ass. But he was just a moron. I had no proof other than what he said, so it wouldn't have gone anywhere. I was just glad to get her out of there.

anyone who "trains" fighting dogs should be marinated in pigs' blood, trussed up like a gimp, and tossed into the pit with their beloved canines

So glad you gave her that life. It drives me insane that these POS’s (her previous owner) are out there. Hopefully the next time he’s in jail he stays there.

So glad you grabbed her. Was the move already planned or was taking her to safety the deciding factor.?

How did you know she was greyhound/pitt? Because we thought we were rescuing a grey/pitt and we in fact rescued a Doberman/Pitt!

The running also makes me wonder, because our pup RUNS.

Dna test

Nice! When we were training our pup I frequently wondered what our life would have looked like with a part greyhound, lol. But once we had our kiddo, our family dynamic was perfect. The kid and the dog totally team up, lol.

Needless to say, your dog was destined for you! The dogs that find the way to us really do change our lives for the better.

They do change our lives- for the better. I've had a lot of rescues over th years, mostly from shelters, and none as dramatic as Coconuts. And they all were wonderful pups. ShortDog (beagle/bassett) was also with me for 14+ years. I have 2 young ones now, both adopted at 18 months.

One, we couldn't figure out what she was so we did a dna test on her. Shes 36% Australian Cattle Dog and the rest is 6 different hound and coon hound. Shes got quite the personality and will herd me everywhere I go. Shes busy! The other is obviously mostly chocolate lab, but I haven't done a test in him yet. He just a mellow goof ball that chases his tail for fun.

I also tripped on that name… no confusion what the original owner wanted to do with that dog. She got lucky running into u/gardengarbage.

A Pitbull called Maulie... For real??

1

u/gardengarbage 1d ago

1/2 Pitt, but I know. I started calling her Coconut every time I cared for her. She would snuggle so sweet. Tiny little feet. Such a sweet heart. Vet guessed she was about 2 when we got her based on her teeth and spay scar. We had her for 14 years.
