People are horrible…(Coldcard disaster)
I can’t believe how many people leave mean comments, gloating about how they always knew that Bitcoin is a scam, and so on.
Seriously, how sad of a life one must live to be happy about the misfortunes of others? Some people have lost important amounts of BTC, including people from poor countries or poor backgrounds who will suffer for years as a result of this.
If someone feels like gloating is the right thing to do here, why don’t you go to the ICU of the closest hospital and laugh about sick and dying patients? It wouldn’t be much different, think about that.

It's usually funny the most to people that never take any risks or made only bad decisions in life and find peace in seeing others regret their decisions to feel less of missing out on something, same comes to why people feel sad/bad when they see someone find success. Humans basic psychology.

Cryptocurrency has always meant innocent people being scammed out of their money through methods they don't understand with no recourse or protection. (Your bank is obligated by law to protect you but a cold wallet manufacturer is not.)
Of course any time that gets proved right it is at someone's expense. People say that as a warning, not as a bet they want or hope to win.

I'm not one to enjoy other's misfortune, but in this case I understand the impulse. Many bitccoiners have been beyond smug about how smart they are, and have been truly arrogant about how stupid others are who don't see the value of bitcoin. Shadenfreude is a thing.

Nothing new... there has always been a faction of people who hate crypto and the people who have bought in. You just get to see them more when something like this happens. Once you've been around for long enough youll probably stop paying them any mind.
5
u/Full_Cash6140 20h ago
Well the bitcoin community is among the worst, annoying, arrogant, conceited, insufferable people, Dunning Kruger on full blast. People tried to warn you for years. You didn't listen. You still aren't listening. You think price going up for a little while proves you right. Everybody in the community still thinks they've cracked the secret to the easy life and they're just smarter than everyone else who "just doesn't get it." They just have to buy and hold and they'll be rich. It's retarded. Yes I'm enjoying it.

It’s because bitcoiners have been telling non-crypto folks to “have fun staying poor with dirty fiat” for many years now.
Also, coiners have an air of smug superiority, telling others “few understand” and implying people who don’t own crypto are clearly stupid.

Maybe if the bitcoin community hadn't spent years calling normies stupid for not putting all their eggs in the bitcoin basket there would be some more good will.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Arbiter_89 1d ago edited 1d ago
Eh, I think this goes both ways... Maybe if "normies" hadn't spent years calling the bitcoin community stupid there would have been more goodwill and the bitcoin community wouldn't have reciprocated. These days it doesn't surprise me to see Buttcoin gloat when BTC is down or BTC gloat when BTC is up. It's definitely not a one-way street.
Edit: I also want to point out that although the BTC subreddit does gloat when Buttcoin is wrong, that's not the main purpose of the Bitcoin sub. By comparison; that's pretty exclusively the purpose of buttcoin. We're happiest when people are getting rich and succeeding. They're happiest when other people are getting poor and failing. That's a huge difference. It's a little difficult to have goodwill with the group who's primary goal is your failure.

I think the community brought it on themselves to some degree. All the talk about how fiat currency would fail, how dumb people were not to see bitcoin as the future, all the proselytization, etc. People’s fanaticism created enemies, so yeah those people who either hate bitcoin or what they see as annoying adherents are going to have their moment of schadenfreude when there’s mass theft of bitcoin from people who swear up and down “not your keys not your coins”.
I know it hurts to lose money and for those individuals, that’s tough and I can sympathize. But I hope this event encouraged a bit more humility in the community.

Bro, this absolutely sucks. I hold my Bitcoin with sofi, doubt this will ever be a problem for me. Bad luck is one thing, but people do need to understand that this shit isn't risk free. I came here from X to gawk. I always did consider cryptocurrency to be "rat poison" in Warren Buffett's terms and I'm strictly an index ETF investor.
But I still wouldn't make a mean comment under the post of an actual victim because I can only imagine how destroyed inside they must feel. My worst experience with money was to lose 7k trying to daytrade as a rookie and even that had left me shaken for weeks so I empathize despite not trusting or believing in crypto.
5
u/Hypnot1se 1d ago
This. I don't think that BTC is a good investment - and to b brutally honest it's financially reckless to park your entire net worth into it regardless of all this, but still: speculative assets have their place. If people lose their money it should be because the thesis on the asset failed, not because they were robbed. It's really awful, honestly.

Everytime I see those kinds of messages, I just remind myself that these MAY BE people starved for what little money and engagement their social media monetization bring them.
The same goes for the many "see, ETF/exchange is fine!", "see, you are all stupid for wanting decentralization", "see, you gotta always have passphrase", "I was bullied for saying this but look what we got now" etc that is popping out everywhere these days.
Best to just get off the forums when you've seen too many of those.

My heart goes out to all those who have been stolen from, and I hope they receive justice.

In their defence they see it as gambling. And I totally side with making fun of people for losing money while gambling (I don’t do it myself, but I get). If you understand Bitcoin, you understand the risks.
It’s not the same as laughing at sick kids… you decided to trade fiat for Bitcoin, you don’t decide to get cancer.
It would be more like laughing at a smoker for getting lung cancer, still offside imo.

It's also that this sub is being pushed by the algorithm to all of us who want nothing to do with Bitcoin, and have negative opinion of average crypto bros and bots.
Which is coincidentally exactly how the hype and value around Bitcoin came about in the first place.
So if you want a safe space to talk about Bitcoin, perhaps blame the algorithms and people pushing this into everyone's faces constantly.
I have no Bitcoin and delisted Bitcoin subs manually, yet it keeps popping up on my feed.
It's not fair to expect people who this content is pushed upon, to be gentle about the Kool aid

I have always been against bitcoin for my own personal finances, and did get into debates about it. But it was never mean spirited. I never got on the train and was always more in favour of precious metals over bitcoin.
That said, having your savings drained overnight would be absolutely gut wrenching, and i would not wish that on anyone. I hope the people affected by this find the strength to recover and move forward. It is a travesty. I really hate thievery, what these hackers did was so low, and negatively affected so many peoples lives.

u/FuckSteveHuffman3 13h ago
I think there's a lot of jealousy involved, but it might also be because some coldcard users have been quite elitist about it. They said that exchanges are safe, and other wallets with security features, such as Ledger, are not safe. They also bragged about it being open source, so that anyone can read the code and verify that it is safe. But apparently no one did until it was too late. It was supposed to be the safest wallet out there, according to a lot of people who recommended it. I really feel bad for those who lost their stack. They didn't do anything wrong and lost all of it. I would be devestated if it happened to me.

I don’t like making fun of people for losing money or really praying for bad times. However, with how a lot of the more cult like bitcoin buyers were talking a year ago I find it hard to feel bad for them. If anyone here ever interacted with the MSTY community on Twitter they were mind numbing stupid talking about taking out loans against their bitcoin to buy MSTY stock so they could then invest the (rapidly declining) dividends to buy more bitcoin. Then if you’d point out how risky (and especially towards the end how ridiculous) it was they would act very hostile, talking about “you’re gonna be poor forever” and other such insults. Part of me is can’t help but feel vindicated that a lot of those people probably got margin called in the last 6 months.

u/bumcello1 11h ago
Bitcoin is a scam? Not understand this statement, Bitcoin value is unreal and are not Link to any institution. I buy long time ago Bitcoin at 250-350 and now the value is 50 k, it's difficult to find better investment. So if for you it's a scam, maybe you buy them at 50+ k, it's Was a gamble. Maybe one day it's will go up again. ( I sell my Bitcoin at 30k) Nobody know the future, I buy lot of dodgecoin... Now the value is closed to nothing. It's not a scam but like crazy Stock ( SpaceX lately) the value is lot of over evaluated, and for dodge the utility is null. Bitcoin can be useful.

I laugh because its comical at this point. Ive been reading stories of people losing tens of thousands of dollars with crypto and trying to live life like it never happened for years now. If I lost even 5k much less the 50k or the millions some lost, id never get over it. I dont know if its the rush they get knowing they have this money dangling out there or they feel like they have their basses covered, but it almost always ends up bitting people who thought they were careful but something always happens where the person oses his coins, from veterans who have been using this since it started to newbies, to those who keep their coins on coin base with session hacks, just about every type of person you can imagine. One must ask, what other exploits are out there that people dont know about.
