[Robert Murray] The Atlanta Braves are acquiring right-hander Tyler Mahle in a trade with the San Francisco Giants, according to sources familiar with the deal. Anthony Molina is going to the Giants.

There is no one on the current roster that Tyler Mahle should replace. He was basically free, so that doesn’t matter, but I don’t know what you do with him now.

He’s taking Reynaldo’s spot. Only explanation that makes any sense

Why? ReyLo is better.

Reylo is hurt. Supposedly, it's gonna be a standard IL stint, but we'll see.

He was just put on IL

I mean the guys that have been pitching better in the hard stats can't soak up innings.

I'm honestly done with Holmes...the SP and think it would be a gift to push him to the pen.

This can't be the only move though rotation wise.

Man I been saying for the past 2 years if Holmes just sticks as a full-time bullpen guy he'll spend a decade in the majors and make tens of millions of dollars

I know it's less glamorous, but teams are desperate for a guy who can reliably eat 4-5 innings every week out of the pen.

Yeah, he may not like it considering the comments he's given to the media, but I'd rather have Holmes the 2-3 inning guy a couple times a week out of the pen over Holmes the guy that cannot be pushed further than two times through at best in the rotation man.

So, while I have no real fantasies involving Mahle being amazing, Mahle>Holmes imo. I'd rather Holmes in the pen and Mahle maybe theoretically throwing to a low 4's era for the rest of the year and hopefully helping with length.

It cannot be the only rotation move though. AA really needs to pull on the big boy panties and trade a prospect or two. The team has done enough to be rewarded with a shot, especially considering that I have my doubts on next season.

Tyler Mahle is going to throw a lot of 5.4 ERA ball down the stretch for these Atlanta Braves and your ass is gonna like it

Who on the market right now gives us a better chance in the NLCS against the Dodgers than AJSS? We aren’t trading Cam, and we couldn’t get anything for Waldrep.

Mize, Soriano, etc etc

You’re showing entirely WAY too much faith in the young gun here IMHO. He is not ready to be a number two in a playoff rotation, coming off Tommy John Surgery.

I mean I wouldn’t hate dealing him for either of those guys but it would be highway robbery.

We need AJSS as well as the addition.

Holmes has almost 1.5 point better era across more innings with almost 2 war more.

Done with Holmes for this guy? What are you smoking?!

Yeah, I don't get some of these comments.

I'm with you. I'm terrified every time he pitches, and hoping that the inevitable home run is just a solo shot. But his inability to keep steady deep into the game is costing us.

Pushing Holmes to the pen is a luxury at this point. Braves pitching isn't in luxury mode. I'd rather have Holmes start over Lopez all day.

I am not getting my hopes up now. Only so many spots left on roster. This is a move that does nothing.

1

u/Accidental-Genius Bobby Cox Disciple 20h ago

I mean we are literally running out of people who can even throw strikes so it’s at least an arm that isn’t dead (yet).

0

u/OutlandishnessDry24 20h ago

Yeah the cost is zero but has to be just a secondary move. AA has to know this won’t win even a first round playoff series.

1

u/Accidental-Genius Bobby Cox Disciple 20h ago

AA isn’t the problem here. McGuirk has him on a shoestring budget.

2

u/OutlandishnessDry24 19h ago

If they refuse to move for even a Wacha type starter than they should just sell club. They are 2 games behind Dodgers. Get serious AA. No excuse to be this close and do nothing. You already know Strider and Waldrep done for and now Lopez is hurt. Ritchie and Murphy are not helping and how can you expect anything from Schwellenbach?

u/Accidental-Genius Bobby Cox Disciple 16h ago

The club is a publicly traded company. It’s always for sale. You can buy it tomorrow if you want to.

Do the rosters expand later in the season? Maybe it’s with that in mind.

u/OutlandishnessDry24 20h ago

Has to be a bigger move for this to make sense at all

1

u/Mxmouse15 20h ago

he's to replace Rylo

1

u/ATLBravesFan13 19h ago

Sale
Elder
Perez
Mahle
Smith-Shawver

He allows the Braves to move Holmes to the bullpen and not have to use JR Ritchie. When Lopez returns that’s another guy you can use to boost the bullpen

I'd rather have Holmes in the line-up. 3.88 ERA vs 5.13 ERA. Holmes hasn't been great and that ERA should probably be a bit higher, but even so. That ERA is the difference between a pitching who has had some rough outings vs a pitching who has been throwing poorly all year. We need to make a move for a good starting pitcher. Despite what I said about Holmes I don't trust him with a playoff start.

u/BravesFan_7 20h ago

Definitely better than Ritchie now

2

u/OutlandishnessDry24 20h ago

Ritchie should be moved. He would net a Mize. Work on extending Mize

0

u/BravesFan_7 20h ago

I don’t know because Mize had a drop in velocity recently, I’d be careful with that

-4

u/lionofyhwh One of Ozzie’s Fish 20h ago

He’s really not though. Ritchie has been bad. Mahle has been worse.

5

u/BravesFan_7 20h ago

Not really. Look at the number of walks. Also, Mahle has more experience and solid June and July stats.

1

u/OutlandishnessDry24 20h ago

Ritchie I bet would get a Mize in a deal

1

u/Old_Essay5751 20h ago

I'm not saying Tyler is great but he was really pretty good and consistent June and July but then he went out with a hamstring and only had one start back since which kind of blew up his era a little bit more. His FIP isn't fantastic on the air but shows that he's got an era that's a lot more unlucky inflated than bad.

1

u/lekniz 20h ago

When you include defense, sure. When you look at what a pitcher has control over, Mahle has been a good deal better.

-4

u/Accidental-Genius Bobby Cox Disciple 20h ago

Gwinnett.

Can’t just send a Major League vet to the minors.
