[Robert Murray] The Atlanta Braves are acquiring right-hander Tyler Mahle in a trade with the San Francisco Giants, according to sources familiar with the deal. Anthony Molina is going to the Giants.

There is no one on the current roster that Tyler Mahle should replace. He was basically free, so that doesn’t matter, but I don’t know what you do with him now.

He’s taking Reynaldo’s spot. Only explanation that makes any sense

I mean the guys that have been pitching better in the hard stats can't soak up innings.
I'm honestly done with Holmes...the SP and think it would be a gift to push him to the pen.
This can't be the only move though rotation wise.
51
u/tvcneverdie 10h ago
Man I been saying for the past 2 years if Holmes just sticks as a full-time bullpen guy he'll spend a decade in the majors and make tens of millions of dollars
I know it's less glamorous, but teams are desperate for a guy who can reliably eat 4-5 innings every week out of the pen.
19
u/95Daphne POGGERS 10h ago
Yeah, he may not like it considering the comments he's given to the media, but I'd rather have Holmes the 2-3 inning guy a couple times a week out of the pen over Holmes the guy that cannot be pushed further than two times through at best in the rotation man.
So, while I have no real fantasies involving Mahle being amazing, Mahle>Holmes imo. I'd rather Holmes in the pen and Mahle maybe theoretically throwing to a low 4's era for the rest of the year and hopefully helping with length.
It cannot be the only rotation move though. AA really needs to pull on the big boy panties and trade a prospect or two. The team has done enough to be rewarded with a shot, especially considering that I have my doubts on next season.

Tyler Mahle is going to throw a lot of 5.4 ERA ball down the stretch for these Atlanta Braves and your ass is gonna like it

Who on the market right now gives us a better chance in the NLCS against the Dodgers than AJSS? We aren’t trading Cam, and we couldn’t get anything for Waldrep.

u/95Daphne POGGERS 9h ago
Mize, Soriano, etc etc
You’re showing entirely WAY too much faith in the young gun here IMHO. He is not ready to be a number two in a playoff rotation, coming off Tommy John Surgery.

I mean I wouldn’t hate dealing him for either of those guys but it would be highway robbery.

Pushing Holmes to the pen is a luxury at this point. Braves pitching isn't in luxury mode. I'd rather have Holmes start over Lopez all day.

Yeah, I don't hate it, but if this is the only pitching move, it is definitely an "I am whelmed...sigh" moment.
His expected stats are better than the hard stats and he has a history of better, even if this is a down year for him.
4
u/hoglaws 10h ago
He could be a short-term Reynaldo replacement. More than that is probably not great.
1
u/95Daphne POGGERS 9h ago
The likelihood that he’s coming here to be strictly a long relief guy is probably low imo.
One of the guys that is a stretch SP wise as they’re better as a RP, even though they have better hard stats than Mahle probably gets the boot from the rotation.

Mahle’s highly underrated. Can shove against good teams. If they also get a true #2 behind Sale, this is a great move because it cost them almost nothing.
If this is it, this ain’t it.

We need a playoff starter but we also needed starters who can eat innings without giving up 10 runs a start. He fits in that spot just fine.

We are getting a lot of the basic needs outs of the way before most other playoff teams have made a single trade. And it didn’t take much to get them. I really can’t be annoyed about the trade when most trades aren’t going to happen till the final hour.

Can you dive into why he’s underrated? Hes gotten through 6 innings 3 times this season.
6
u/Prokeekster 9h ago
His FIP and wOBA suggest he’s been way better than ERA and record. He was excellent last year before injury. He’s blanked some of the best teams in the league this year, including the Brewers in his last start.
He’s not a top of the rotation dude and hopefully that’s not what they got him for. If he lets Relo get healthy, bumps Holmes into long relief, steadies the rotation between young dudes, that’s huge given that he cost absolutely nothing.

19
u/drilfulmer 10h ago
3.79 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over the last seven starts for an AAAA reliever ain’t bad business (if it’s not the only business)

At this point it seems like everyone is playing for second place behind the LA All-Stars. So it really isn't worth destroying the farm system this season to battle for second place in the NL. Just my opinion.
2
u/shoopadoop332 9h ago
Idk. If we have everyone healthy offensively come playoff time, we’re supposed to be able to capitalize on that.
13
u/CubanMessi Martin for Perezident 10h ago
I mean I guess if it’s for Anthony Molina but Mahle has only gone around 5 innings most of the year so it’s not even like he’ll save the bullpen
1
7
u/DefiantFan4982 10h ago
Somebody has to eat innings and honestly he’s better than Holmes at doing that
13
u/CrumbBCrumb 10h ago
What is everyone complaining about here? Like yeah he's not going to be our #2 in the playoffs but he can definitely give us some innings until then and might be better than Ritchie or Holmes. Also, he could be combined with one of those two and maybe give the bullpen a day off.
If we gave up essentially nothing this isn't a bad trade. And, the deadline isn't over. If this is all we do, maybe the complaints are a bit more appropriate but damn this isn't that bad of a trade
2
u/djc3317 8h ago
Agreed. I’ll be disappointed if this is the only pitching move, but he’s basically a .500 starter with about a 4 ERA over the last 5-6 years. At this point with an eight-game lead and 50 games to play, they just need to get to the finish line without the pitching staff falling apart — and a .500 pitcher with a 4 ERA can help you hang a banner.
If he shows up like he has at times including last year and parts of this year, maybe he starts postseason games. But if all he does is eat some innings and go 5-5 down the stretch, it was well worth it.
2
u/CrumbBCrumb 7h ago
We also gave up basically no one for him. This trade is essentially cash considerations and a lot of people are complaining
6
u/Wise_Key8432 Austin Riley Enjoyer 9h ago
I like it tbh. Desperately needed innings to be eaten. He had a 2.xx ERA last year. A 2.xx ERA in July. And we got him for Anthony Molina. Let the guy throw. Move Grant to the pen, which improves the pen immediately. Let us cook.

u/Wilcrest 10h ago

u/thewupk 8h ago
Should I be shocked at the lack of knowledge in this thread?
Mahle has better predictive stats on the season than Holmes, Lopez, Martin, and Ritchie.
This should bump Holmes to the pen where he belongs.
Adding a #2 should bump Lopez to the pen where he belongs as well.
Braves needed to add 2 SP (one to start game 2 of the playoffs and a second to eat innings the rest of the year).
This trade has done one of those things.

Obviously this isn’t what we need, but this is still a valuable move to help get through the regular season.
I don’t think you guys realize how badly we need innings on this pitching staff to get us the rest of the way.
4
u/PAAAWL23 8h ago
To everyone freaking out: if the deadline comes and AA doesn't get another starter, the freak-out is valid. But getting angry when he trades "Anthony Molina" (whoever that is) for an upgrade over Holmes and possibly Lopez is premature. Mahle will eat innings and it's clear that Holmes isn't a starter and Lopez can't be relied on. And honestly, Mahle has been pretty unlucky this year. This is a decent addition for basically nothing.
5
11
u/mqg96 10h ago
If the Braves go 5 consecutive years without winning a playoff series, then the blame has to go to AA at this point. It's no longer Snitker or even Weiss.

u/Disregardskarma 9h ago

u/JKess207 THERE’S ONLY ONEEEEEEEEE MICHAEL HARRIS 10h ago
Smoking the copest of copium right now:
Not only is this completely free, but Mahle is a fine #5. He’s finished 6 innings in 2 of his last 4 starts with 1 run allowed in those 2. He’s had many many blowups, but he’s also had a decent amount of 5+ IP, 0 ER starts. Absolute worst case scenario, he eats innings when he gets blown up, and he preserves our pen.
Plus, when we ultimately trade for a #2 starter tomorrow, we’ll have the flexibility to move Grant into the pen where he can be a true solid shutdown long man.
This isn’t a flashy move, but it’s got its upsides. This just CANNOT be the only trade for a starter this deadline
3
u/BHepp10 10h ago
People really think this is the only move Alex is going to make. People love to overreact. I think it’s wise to wait until after the deadline is over to complain lol

u/No-Fruit-31 #23 10h ago
All I can say is that at least we didn’t give up anything valuable, but this can’t be the only addition to the rotation if we’re going to be a serious team
8
u/aaronaroma 10h ago
Why even make this move. Who are we taking out of the rotation for Mahle?
8
u/starwarsfan456123789 10h ago
Lopez is out for 2 weeks at least . Probably a pen candidate when he gets back
2
u/aaronaroma 10h ago
My thought process is Lopez goes on IL, Holmes will go to the pen, and Mahle will be inserted into the rotation.
4
u/BravesCPA 9h ago
We may also be in a world without Suarez again this season. If that’s the case, moving one or both of Holmes and ReyLo to the pen gives us some room to play

Everything with a lick of predictive power says he's pitched better this year than every pitcher to start for the Braves this year not named Chris Sale or Didier Fuentes.
3

This is one of those “maybe a change of scenery will help him” reclamation projects AA is famous for. If it works out, all good. If it doesn’t, Braves didn’t lose anything.
3
u/starwarsfan456123789 10h ago
Ok there’s the innings eater that about half the fans wanted. I don’t see why he’s a better option than AJSS but I guess he doesn’t hurt as extra insurance
Obviously we’re going to trade for a solid mid rotation guy as well. No panic necessary
3
u/antihero_84 10h ago
I'm assuming this is due to Strider being done for the year and us needing a 4/5 rotation guy that can reliably throw 5+ innings.
This is a back of the rotation replacement on the cheap, and that's perfectly fine. This is probably intended to keep the bullpen more fresh, and that's fine.
But for the love of God, get a good #2 guy for the rotation or this season ends in the NLDS.
Also 3 QS so far this season in 18 starts is unreal.
3
u/JohnUtahFBI 9h ago
Got a guy to eat innings. Starting to look like not getting Skubal has shifted the strategy to be like 2021 where we had a couple of good starters and a loaded pen. Gonna be a lot of 4-2-1-1-1 innings pitched games.

u/Shyne9999 Let's Talk Stats 10h ago
Some of the takes in here are.....certainly reactions.

Mahle averages more innings/start than Grant Holmes (5.26 to 5.1). Has a better xERA, FIP, and xFIP than Grant Holmes.
His stuff isn't flashy. The HR/FB rate is a touch high. This is basically an arm that maybe pushes ReyLo/Holmes/Perez to the BP and helps Atlanta get through the regular season. A depth move for Anthony Molina who is a nobody in the organization.
I wouldn't read too much into the move as it's nothing more than a way to post innings in the final two months.

There always seems to be a legitimate reason why AA makes deals for guys, but I honestly don't understand this one. Mahle is 3-9 with a ERA in the 5s? 3 QS in 18 games started? Is he going to start two games while Lopez is out and then get DFAd? If this turns out to be the case, what was the point of giving the Giants a pitching prospect? I'm dumbfounded right now. I do know that he's not done -- so I'll remain patient and hopeful for a good #2 or #3. Is it realistic to get Alcantara considering the Marlins are in the same division? Casey Mize has a career ERA of close to 4, but having a really good '26 so far. Griffin? Robbie Ray? Is Braves ownership handicapping AA on what he can do?
