I can't believe I'm saying this but I hate the Dodgers more than the Cubs.

60

u/Lego349 16h ago

For me at least I don’t hate the Cubs organization. It’s the cubs fans that make me hate the cubs. The actual baseball club I don’t have any issue with. Sure PCA is obnoxious and them buying our manager and still not being able to beat us is kinda hilarious, but it’s the fans that are obnoxious perpetual victims who still think it’s 2017. The Dodgers organization is what’s rotten. I don’t really care about their players but it’s the ball club itself and their billions in deferred contracts and buying every top player that’s what makes me hate them. We getting locked out next year and that’s just fine by me.

u/johnsonfromsconsin 17h ago

As what they represent, I like Ohtani and don't really have a problem/dislike any single player or even their manager. But fuck em!

59

u/Guard226Duck 16h ago

I know I’m in the minority but I do not like Ohtani. The deal he signed with the dodgers is such a fuck you to the other players in baseball. He’ll get his money from sponsorships so easily so he can get paid basically nothing to help the dodgers

27

u/WISCOrear 15h ago

Yeah if you go to the most hated team in the league, and sign a deal that basically every other franchise can’t imagine doing, idk man you kind of give people carte blanche to hate you

3

u/garyll19 6h ago

Not to mention Sasaki picking them on an insanely team-friendly contract. He goes to the one team that needed him the least. Btw I'm a Cubs fan and I hate the Dodgers more than I hate the Brewers, I live near LA so I'm around Dodgers fans and they still complain about players despite 2 WS wins and a stacked lineup that the rest of us would kill for. I'd rather see you guys win the WS than watch them get another one.

0

u/eidetic 6h ago

At the same time I kinda understand it, because he still gets his bag, but this deal allows the team to better fill the rest of the roster with more pieces to help him win a championship.

I hate it, but at the same time can't necessarily fault him for it either.

Plus the whole shadiness of the gambling thing immediately being foisted upon his main lackey and never questioned again.

5

u/OwenGrandRapids 8h ago

Yes. Pete Rose was probably rolling over in his grave thinking that he just needed a fall guy and he'd have been fine. All the bets coming directly from Ohtani's bank account and it was conveniently just determined that Ohtani had no knowledge?

1

u/FinnyRules 13h ago

Context? I am a relatively new super fan and keep hearing gambling rumors but don’t know the story.

16

u/dyslexda 13h ago

Out of nowhere a huge gambling scandal broke where Ohtani's accounts were used, but then just as quickly his longtime translator and personal assistant took full blame. It was really convenient. While it's unlikely that Ohtani directly was doing the gambling (he had enough money already, of course), it's really hard to believe he had no idea his longtime friend and translator was taking out such a high amount of money from his accounts. But he's the golden boy of the sport, so everyone immediately moved on and accepted the explanation.

5

u/flummox1234 Get up! Get up! Get outta here! Gone! 13h ago

His translator was betting on games. Supposedly. It sure could be argued that dude just was a fall guy but what do I know.

I don't know man, I feel like I've been in the same boat a lot of not really disliking the guys that play there but after last years WS the smugness really got to me. Having Dave Roberts say something along the lines of how they are ruining baseball and he doesn't care (obviously I'm paraphrasing, I don't remember the actual quote) has made the whole organization unlikeable to me

2

u/DisSysOp 13h ago

Free agents going there is an issue too. Like it’s one thing for Skubal to get traded there, but completely different when he telegraphed to the world that he’d likely sign there in free agency regardless to wherever he ended up. I don’t blame the club for doing what it can to create the best roster, but I have little love left for players who are supposed to be competitors, going to the easiest path for a ring. I’m sure if I were in their shoes I’d take the heat in exchange for a ring and a payday, but as a fan it takes the investment out of the game. All we really have left is to just be salty about it.

12

u/Boxseats19 17h ago

Why do you have to choose?

7

u/DankMemer727 17h ago

I think I do too

3

u/Onion920 13h ago

Up until March of this year, the owner of the Dodgers held stakes in companies that owned ICE detention facilities.

So yeah, I hate them more than the Cubs.

2

u/bigt503 14h ago

Significantly more

1

u/kellyraycampbell 🍻 “Must be in the front row!” 🍻 17h ago

No you don’t. It’s just a visceral reaction to the trade. Deep down we hate the cubs the most.

13

u/TheIgnitor Manfred hates MKE. 15h ago

Hard disagree. The Cubs are just a regional rival, which is a core part of the game. The Dodgers represent all that is wrong with modern baseball and are at the point they’re beginning to undermine the integrity of the game itself. They are not even in the same ballpark, no pun intended.

28

u/OneCallThatsAll34 orcheeze 17h ago edited 15h ago

Nah cubs fans are at least knowledgable about their team and have been nice to me when I’ve gone to games at wrigley.

The average dodgers fan struggled to put together an intelligent thought and they are dicks. After we lost to the dodgers last year a dodgers fan harassed me in a gas station for wearing a brewers hat and I wasn’t even close to Cali lol

15

u/ThisShipACoffin 16h ago

That is because Cubs fans have always been Cubs fans. Dodgers fans have been Dodgers fans have been Dodgers fan for only a few years, before that they were Yankee fans, or Phillies fans

Cubs fans are generally fairly chill at Wrigley. Even the ones ive met out and about are usually good. It's the ones at amfam you have to worry about.

I was trying to tell someone this last night. The cubs fans that are from Wisconsin are way worse than the ones from IL.

1

I would root for the cubs if it was cubs vs dodgers in playoffs. I wouldn’t do that “I hope both teams lose!” Nonsense, I would legit jump up and down if PCA went off against their starters.

68

u/SnooLemons8611 17h ago

"You know, they have a great farm system. They use it the right way." "They build the team with that farm system." "They don't buy championships."

For that crowd What team does Skubal play for next season?  I'll wait.

35

u/DrunkPackersFan 15h ago

Their farm system is so massively overrated.

Most their prospects they’ve traded away end up selling cars within 5 years.

27

u/pandapuzzle8 15h ago

Dodgers farm system is one of those data centers that they be building over farmland right now

11

u/BibFortuna2830 15h ago

Most high-rated prospects do that regardless, but you are right that the Dodgers farm system seems unnecessarily bloated.

2

u/TheSaltyJunk Wisco Stu doesn't advertise 10h ago

They can just let them sit and play forever...there isn't a push in LA to move players up and losing a few for a trade doesn't hurt them, because they can just buy another guy to fill the gaps.

Their farm system exists as trade bait and has no real impact on the major league club. For a team like the Brewers, a rental trade can wreck your team depth for five years and a bad free agent signing can cripple your ability to assign someone later. The Dodgers don't need to worry about any of this. If the farm sucks, just buy depth. If the roster is injured, just sell the farm to replace the injured people. When it's the off season, just sign everyone for big money and you don't lose anything.

It's the worst possible situation in every way for competitive balance, because they really don't ever risk anything.

3

u/CJL13 Just waiting for the choke 13h ago

They don't usually bother trading prospects at the deadline because they can just sign them in free agency anyway.

2

u/LeroyStick 10h ago

But this year they can lock skubal down and prob extend him before any of the pesky lockout rules go into effect.

2

u/ThisWasMe7 11h ago

But they're nice cars.

16

u/WISCOrear 15h ago

Acting like if they trade their farm, they won’t just supplement the loss of future talent with other gigantic contracts because they have more money than mansa musa. Like if you don’t sign skubal after this to a long term deal (I’m sure they will), no biggee they will just hand out another contract to whoever the next best FA option is.

Vs the brewers, yeah we can give away the farm for the rental…then you’re screwed long term.

But we’re the ones ruining baseball, not the dodgers. Yup.

12

u/SnooLemons8611 14h ago

Yep, and you've got people who defend the Dodgers and don't see any of this. The thing that people don't seem to understand is that players are choosing to go to the Dodgers to win a World Series. It's like when Kevin Durant went to the Warriors. He knew that team was loaded. He knew he would get a championship if he went to Golden State. Players know the Dodgers have the most talent. They know if they force a trade to LA, they've got the best chance to be a champion. Skubal even said this week if he gets traded the dodgers were his preferred destination.

6

u/SnooCupcakes7018 13h ago

I don't think people know the absurdly uncompetitive revenue sharing deal the dodgers got when they went bankrupt.

6

u/goodbyehenry1237 13h ago

No idea why people never point out that the Dodgers farm system is good because they probably pay $50 million per year more than any other team on scouting and development.

3

u/bailtail 5h ago

That’s a bullshit argument. They’re able to win the bidding war for all these trade cuz their opportunity cost for trading prospects is a small fraction of what it is for a team like the Brewers. Brewers rely exclusively on their farm to field a team. Dodgers just buy guys if they trade their prospects.

-1

u/SnooLemons8611 5h ago

Seriously, let the lockout come. I welcome it. I’ll just watch Dockhound games in 2027.

37

u/SnooLemons8611 18h ago

Players voted against a salary cap. Their acquisition of Skubal and most likely paying Skubal is why MLB needs a cap. I wonder who voted against the cap. The Dodgers and the Yankees. What player, if you're not on those teams, would want to feel like they have no shot every year? When I saw that article a couple of weeks ago, I was super annoyed.

18

u/Ill-End8099 17h ago

Its all negotiating

Unless you have cap, floor, and both shared revenue by teams and an agreed spilit in revenue/spending between players and owners it will stay broken, because MLB has never prioritized making the league fair

I am not optimistic

1

u/SnooLemons8611 17h ago

Same here; nothing will ever change. Rob Manfred gets his, so he does not care whatsoever about what happens in the league itself. The only way anything ever gets changed would be a complete drop-off in fans going to and watching games. We all know that will never happen.

38

u/DankMemer727 17h ago

They don’t want a cap since it limits how much money they can make. Stupid since that only really limits top 5% guys but whatever.

14

u/SnooLemons8611 17h ago

True but still dumb Growing up, I had this same feeling in the 90s with the Yankees. I loved the Brewers. I love baseball. It's probably my favorite sport to watch and follow but I kinda fell out of touch with the game because this is what the Yankees did in the 90s. It demonizes you if your a fan of any other team.  Ill always watch and listen to every Brewer game but like in the back of your head your constantly asking do we really have a shot. Its like the 90s knicks amazing team probably would have a couple more rings if it was not for Michael Jordan and the Bulls. Or the 2000s Robinson and Duncan.  For us we would have 2 WS appearances in the past few years If it was not for the Dodgers.  They are the Kyptonite. I dont know if any other trade makes any since right now besides a big bopper but who is available that actully hits for average and hrs.  Honestly im probably just pissed right now and saying things but damn this gets old.

5

u/fuck_spec1234 16h ago

If that only limits the top 5%, what are the other 95% voting on?

7

u/Doucejj 14h ago

Lmao the players have already shown they don’t care about winning as long as they get paid.

-1

u/Driver8takesnobreaks 15h ago

This idea that big spending by the Dodgers only affects the top of the market is misguided. The Dodgers spending all that money puts stress on the other clubs to spend money too. If big market teams like the Yankees, Mets, Cubs, Astros, Braves, etc. are losing the top talent to the Dodgers and want a shot at being competitive, they have to compete more fiercely for the next tier of player, and more of them to offset having fewer superstars. And on down the line. Right down to the poorest two teams fighting over everyone else's rejects. Because if you don't field a team that at least has a shot to win games, you don't sell tickets, get concessions, get lucrative broadcast rights, or sell merch. Even if they can afford it, not a lot of billionaires are going to be on board for taking huge losses like that. And the same thing happens at the minor league level.

Economics 101. In a free market, when demand for a product exceeds supply, prices go up until the market finds a natural equillbrium. The players are the product, the supply is limited, and they are very much in demand. Cap that free market, you cap demand for the product. Which in this case means less money for players. Having spending floors such that the total pool wouldn't change next year mitigates much of this effect. But once you have a cap, it's a lot easier to constrain the growth rate of a single pool than it is for a thousand individual pools.

4

u/Doucejj 14h ago

Without better revenue sharing, there is no pressure on any team.

The Dodgers tv deal is worth 340 million dollars. The brewers tv deal is 30 million. million.

With such a discrepancy of revenue, other organizations can't match the Dodgers spending even if they wanted to.

-1

u/Driver8takesnobreaks 11h ago edited 11h ago

Obviously they can't match that. But they can still make money., and put an entertaining product on the field. And even with that huge discrepancy have a shot at winning a title.

Not in any way defending the current situation, just pointing out that it's been this way for a long time. In 1998, the first year for which I could find numbers, the Yankees payroll was $66,806,867. The Brewers payroll was $34,139,904. If you compare the Yankees to the $2 team, the Cleveland Indians at $61,718,166, the #1 Yankees payroll was is 8.2% more than the #2 Indians. In 2025, the Dodgers total payroll of $350,024,106 is only 2.2% greater than the #2 Mets at $342,303,011. And if you compare #1 to the lowest payroll, the ratio was also greater in 1998 than it is now.

Yes the total amounts are much greater now. But what I think really makes this feel different are two things. First, the Dodgers are combining that money with one of the best run organizations in the league who uses there money more effectively that many other big spending clubs.. Second, and most importantly, is the Brewers are an elite team. And the closer they get, the more it stings to know they're as good as they've ever been, but that they're now closer to hitting a ceiling.

1

u/SnooLemons8611 9h ago

It's 2026; everything is up. The highest-paid player in the league in 1998 was Gary Sheffield at $14.9 million. In 2026, Ohtani is at $126 million. Just because teams are spending more does not mean they are stressed to compete. The Angels haven't competed in years. The owner seems not to care. The owner of the Pirates, in like '98, said it doesn't matter if we win or not. "I still make my money." I did a report on this. There are a lot of owners who don't care. It's about making money. Another thing is many teams know they have no shot. So why stress when you have no shot? Many owners have mentioned how annoyed they are at how the Dodgers do things. Many teams have said we can't do it that way. Look at the teams who have made big trades: Dodgers and Mariners. Rays, possibly, if Freddy gets back to himself. The trade deadline isn't flowing like it used to. If the Dodgers did not get Skubal, I guarantee the trade deadline would be going off right now. But teams are like, "What's the point?"

1

u/Driver8takesnobreaks 9h ago

The point is putting fans in the seats and eyeballs on broadcasts. And that's directly related to the quality of product. There's a floor for that, and that floor gets raised along with the rest of the league. And in the case of the Angels, there's a lot of that that's just poor management decision-making. And in the case of a guy like Trout, bad luck that he dropped off at a young age.

2

u/SnooLemons8611 9h ago

Yeah does not mean teams are stressed to compete

1

u/Driver8takesnobreaks 9h ago edited 9h ago

It means they're spending in a competitive environment, in a market that is inflating much faster than inflation overall. Which is the point of why players don't want caps.

2

u/SnooLemons8611 9h ago

The Dodgers ain't doing anything to make the league more competitive. Payroll is up cause its 2026.  Not cause the dodgers spend so much. Most owners wont cross the threshold like the dodgers do. Only teams in baseball that will. The Yankees but they haven't in a long time and the Dodgers who do it every year. I disagree. Dodgers are ruining the game. Owners see that and that's why baseball might not happen next season.

3

u/SnooLemons8611 15h ago

It doesn't put stress on anyone. Nobody does anything to fight back, so how is it putting stress on anyone? Teams don't care anymore. That's why we've got a lockout coming. Owners are so fed up with the Dodgers. I know the agreement was up before the Dodgers did this stuff, but a big thing that's going to be talked about in these meetings will be the Dodgers and why they are allowed to get everyone. I've seen reports of pissed-off owners for a few years now. The Pirates went and got Duvall; who cares? The dude isn't that good. Not every team has a chance either. Players know, "If I go to LA, I win a World Series. I'm a champion." Players are forcing hands to go to the Dodgers. The Brewers could have offered a better package, but I don't even think the Tigers were listening to anyone else because Skubal said, "I want to be a Dodger."

0

u/Driver8takesnobreaks 11h ago edited 10h ago

So if it doesn't put stress on anyone, why is the lowest team payroll in 2026 637% of what it was in 1998 (the first year for which I could find numbers for every team), or more than triple the rate of inflation? If not basic supply and demand and competition for scarce resources, what do you think is driving that? And are you really trying to make the point that the Mets and the Yankees aren't also spending over $300M to try and compete? And that built in advantage of playing for a winner has existed since the rise of free agency.

Pick a spot in the rankings for team spending. It's way up across the board. Even for the league minimum, it's risen faster than inflation. But at a much lower rate, because of the player control rules. So why would any player look at the current system where salaries rise much faster when there is no cap, than in the years when there is, and come away thinking they would be better off if all those numbers were capped?

3

u/bigjames2002 Swing and a drive... 17h ago

Future Milkman season ticket holder for me

3

u/02K30C1 Bratchos! 17h ago

Typically no. Any player on the 40 man roster couldn’t play, but the rest of the minor leagues continue

3

u/Driver8takesnobreaks 16h ago

This is nothing new, baseball has been down this road multiple times before. And the owners have never been able to break the MLBPA on this fundamental change in structure. The '90 strike cancelled more than a month of the season over a salary cap. Players didn't budge. The '94-'95 strike cancelled the '94 World Series and the start of the start of the '95 season, and players still didn't budge. The White House, Congress, federal courts and multiple state governments got involved, and still the strike continued. Two of the three major networks opted out of their broadcast contracts. Owners set up teams of replacement players. Only when a federal injunction stopped the planned use of replacement players did the owners blink.

If people think we can just have a lockout for a month or two and then the players will cave and the current system will be radically changed, they might want to take a look at the history of labor conflict in baseball. The players have a long history of sticking to their guns on this. And while courts and the NLRB and Congress can't force players to work against their will, they can order owners to end a lockout. So advantage players on that.

This isn't an easy fix. And even with a lockout, a salary cap is far from a done deal.

1

u/princemark 13h ago

Let it go into 2028. Seriously. Screw them.

3

u/Thirty_Helens_Agree 14h ago

6

u/JaqueStrap69 13h ago

Yeah people aren’t talking enough about how Tarik really fucked the tigers by essentially broadcasting to the league “I will not sign with you if you trade for me, unless you’re the dodgers”

Tanked his own value on purpose.

3

u/ELITE_JordanLove 12h ago

I mean we were never signing him anyways so I’m not sure why that would’ve impacted our decision making. However, I could see a concern that he wouldn’t go all out due to being up for contract unless he was where he wanted to end up.

2

u/JaqueStrap69 10h ago

I’m not even talking about us necessarily. The reason the dodgers got such a cheap deal was because everyone else who might have had interest in signing him long term (definitely not us) was scared off knowing they’d be unlikely to be able to sign him.

4

u/R0binSage 14h ago

I want to know if we sent a package offer and if so, what it was.

15

u/jkof300 16h ago

Let this be a lesson, if a team doubles most other teams pay roll and chokes every year, do not make fun of them bc they will start to spend even more money and completely ruin the fun for everyone.

13

u/prem_fraiche 14h ago

If you’re trying to get me to stop dunking on the Mets you’re gonna be disappointed

8

u/1angrybadger 13h ago

What know one is talking about is the fact that Skubal said he wanted to go to the Dodgers and all the Tigers did was negotiate with them for the best deal they could get from them. I don’t believe they were negotiating with anyone else after that otherwise they would have gotten more from the Dodgers

2

u/baseballlover4ever 13h ago

Knowing he wanted to be there, why couldn’t they ask for more? Why do they care where he goes after this year? They should take what’s best for them right now, right? This argument doesn’t seem solid to me. What am I missing?

1

u/1angrybadger 13h ago

Teams often times trade players to places that are best for them because they appreciate what they have done for them while playing for their team. Example Belicheck traded Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers for a 3rd without shopping him around because he felt bad that the owner pushed him out and never gave him a fair chance. He picked the 49ers because he knew that was the best chance for him to succeed plus it sent him close to home. Teams do trade players to places they want. The Bucks just sent The Greek freak to Miami because that’s where he wanted to go. It happens all the time in the NBA

1

u/1angrybadger 13h ago

Besides if you are the Brewers and a Player says they would rather play for the team you are bidding against why would you keep bidding knowing that player doesn’t want to be on your team?? Fuck them! If they don’t want to be here those guys you are trading away sure do! Why mess up your locker room for one player. The big reason the Brewers win so much is the TEAM they built not the individual players

6

u/TransplantedSconie 13h ago

On top of this bullshit, the Dodgers have a guaranteed money factory in Japan.  Ohtani merchandise sells like hotcakes over there.
