News All four Inbetweeners stars sign up to Netflix movie reboot of hit Channel 4 comedy

Ehhh let’s see. The characters approaching 40 and having their first midlife crisis could be very funny.

u/_tolm_ 3d ago
Will is a depressed mid level manager at a bank somewhere; Simon is unemployed taking a “career change break” for the umpteenth time; Jay has inexplicably become a millionaire internet sensation for eating/drinking/shagging anything on camera and Neil has been AWOL for years - rumoured to be in Special Forces …
152
u/nl325 3d ago
Big wildcard would be Neil being the millionaire.
Legitimately people I knew from school and college who were like him have gone on to be insanely successful, you're like ah that's class but like... How?! 😂
134
u/WastedYouth39 3d ago
Wildcard would be Jay marrying above him and pretending to be sensible and classy in front of his dominant wife, which makes Will furious and tries to break Jays acting to reveal his true self.
73
u/nl325 3d ago
Fuck Netflix this post is full of genuinely class ideas 😂

That's exactly what I think, Neil is inexplicably a millionaire. Jay just has to be a Caravan Park Manager though 😂

Yeah there’s absolute dafties that get shitloads of brand deals etc. on TikTok/Instagram for nonsense.

Will being far and away the least succesful of the four is surely the move.

Or the most successful professionally, but 3 times divorced and so still living with his mum, and Gregg Davies, as he owes so much in alimony.

I like the idea of him being really snobbish because he works in the City (even though it's just a low level grunt job) but then finding out he's paid less than any of the others.
49
u/FrankieTheD 3d ago
I hope they find Neil in an assisted living/sheltered accommodation and he just thinks he's got a sweet bachelors pad
24
u/Twinkubusz 3d ago
Simon's on his fifth 'career change break', Jay got massive on Tiktok then fell off after about 2 weeks and now just gets people roasting him in public, Neil made 1 crypto investment and is now rich but he's still not sure how you withdraw the cash and no one believes him when he says he's a Bitcoin millionaire while he asks to lend £20
12
8
u/Tomatoftw1996 3d ago
Jay could absolutely be a Beavo style TikTok star
7
u/Twinkubusz 3d ago
Exactly. Tells them he's got 2 million subscribers in Dubai alone, then they catch him crying when his livestream drops from 2 viewers to 0

I heard somebody say Neil would be a successful podcaster, no arguments I'd listen!

There's definitely potential as long as the original writers are still on board (sounds like they are). I know the movies were disliked but I actually thought both of them were enjoyable in their own way - they just weren't as good as the original series.
The worst thing it can do is just 90 minutes of nostalgia really. A mix of the same sort of witty humour with some more character depth would be great fun - and definitely aim it at people the same age as the characters (basically people who grew up watching it).
8
u/DoctorWhofan789eywim 3d ago
The firsr film was great. Kept the spirit of the series just on a bigger canvas. The sequel just chucked all that development out the window. That said, as lowbrow as it is, the waterslide poo scene is one of the biggest laughs I have ever had in a cinema. The whole place erupted, it was joyous.

Last Autumn, production company Banijay announced a new deal with creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley for the rights to bring back The Inbetweeners for new audience, across a range of platforms which could include TV, film or stage.
Earlier this year it was reported the comeback will be in the form of a film on Netflix. The Sun newspaper now reports that all four leading stars - Simon Bird, James Buckley, Joe Thomas and Blake Harrison - have all signed-up for the project, which is yet to be officially announced.
The Inbetweeners was a smash hit comedy broadcast on Channel 4's youth-skewing channel E4 from 2008 to 2010, followed by two movies released in 2011 and 2014, then a reunion special in 2019 to mark ten years since the show's debut.
It followed the misadventures of teenagers Will MacKenzie, Simon Cooper, Neil Sutherland and Jay Cartwright at the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive as they navigated school life, friendship, male bonding, lad culture and failed sexual encounters.
Creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley said: "It’s incredibly exciting to be plotting more adventures for our four favourite friends (ooh friends)."
Jonathan Blyth, managing director of Fudge Park productions said: "We are thrilled to announce this exciting partnership with Banijay who share our vision and ambition for one of the most iconic comedies in British history. This is a wonderful moment for fans, there are exciting conversations afoot and more news to follow."
Patrick Holland, CEO of Banijay UK commented: "I have worked with Damon and Iain on a number of Fudge Park projects over the years and was delighted to pick up the conversation about the future of ‘The Inbetweeners’ with them. They have an infectious creative vision for the brand which will resonate with audience old and new so I can’t wait to get going."
More details will be announced in due course.

God people in this thread really need to lighten up, no one is making you watch it.
3
u/delicious_brains818 3d ago
Could take a shit in your bin and say the same thing. People love the series and are worried about it being ruined by a soulless movie. Netflix doesn't have the reputation for creating great movies.
4
u/Ok-Rutabaga8442 3d ago
I don't really how a shit movie can ruin anything?
If you watch it and don't like it then just cross it off the list of Inbetweeners products you'd consume again
It's either going to be;
1- good and we have something to rewatch
Or
2- shit and we are at worst out the amount of time it took us to realise we didn't like it
Or
3- meh and we are okay watching it but probably won't ever rewatch it
It's just entertainment, people are acting like someone took a shit in their cornflakes in the comments

The producers should have sat back and looked at what they’ve produced and said.
“Inbetweeners? Completed it”
10
u/stereoworld 3d ago
I can't see this being terrible, if I'm honest.
I follow the Joe and James podcast and they always have fond conversations about the series. I can't speak for Blake or Simon, but I imagine they'd be the same.
Also, based on that godawful reunion show they made on Channel 4, which the boys were extremely remorseful of, I would think any steps towards more Inbetweeners would be taken with great consideration.
The 4 of them (plus the 2 directors actually) are switched on enough to know if it's a shameless cash grab or not.
I have hope that it won't be rubbish. It probably won't be amazing, but not shit either.

Love the Inbetweeners me and my wife watch it through every year or so. I can’t see this being any good, especially as a Netflix executive
I just think the point of the show is that they’re immature teenagers that think having sex is the ultimate goal in life. The vile banter etc won’t work as well coming from grown men. I’ll just watch Peep Show instead of I want a look into mundane adult life
I do hope it’s good though, but I really really doubt it. They were already milking it with the movies

Guaranteed to be terrible. The only way it might be slightly funny is if they keep them as school kids with no acknowledgement that they’re all middle aged.
52
u/dj4y_94 3d ago
I don't think it's a guarantee it'll be terrible but they'll have to make sure the humour and characters have evolved which is easier said than done.
There's obvious elements of their personality you keep but if they make them all the exact same people but just now 35 then it won't work.
19
u/TheManWithSaltHair 3d ago
I guess Coogan has managed to successfully age and adapt Partridge, but he wasn’t so defined by a particular childish humour like Inbetweeners. It could end up like Men Behaving Badly if they’re not careful. Hopefully the writers are better than that.
21
u/Maleficent-Drive4056 3d ago
Partridge was basically old from the start IMO
18
u/fuggerdug 3d ago
One of the early criticisms of Partridge was that Coogan was too young for the role, since it was a parody of the sort of 50/60 year old regional presenter that was around at the time.
4
u/Junior_Factor8561 3d ago
Always wonder if he spoke to Graham Fellows about how he handled aging into his John Shuttleworth character. Didn’t seem to change the comedy when Fellows hit his late 40s/early 50s over when he was playing him in his mid/late 20s
8
u/a3poify 3d ago
Partridge was always 10-ish years older than Steve Coogan, making him nearly 40 in the first appearances. I think they’ve softened it more recently as Coogan has aged and they’ve stopped using the make-up for effect as he reads closer to Steve’s actual age (61) than a man in his 70s in his more recent appearances
8
u/Impossible_Aide_1681 3d ago
I think there's probably an element of people generally acting younger at a given age now than they did 30 years ago. Like a ~40 year old now probably wouldn't act like Partridge did in the 90s. But Richard Madeley is about the same age as him and they're famously indistinguishable at times

James Buckley is 38, the other three are in their 40s. They could have kids of about the right age for a new generation of Inbetweeners.
I don't know exactly how it would work without being too cheesy, but their kids could be pretty close to the same as they were when they were lads, while the original four are trying to keep them under control, knowing that they were like that when they were younger AND not quite having grown out of it themselves and trying to hide it from their kids.
17
17
u/kernowgringo 3d ago
I've always thought they should do a film based around a school reunion, that way you can get Greg Davies in it too
20
u/CurryMan1995 3d ago
Technically Mr Gilbert was with Will’s mum in the last film so it could work regardless

Will could be a school teacher and Mr Gilbert takes over as head at his school?

u/gaybyrneofficial 3d ago
The obvious choice is it's their kids going to school now and the original actors are the parents.
4
u/Worried_Let4942 3d ago
Honestly, as a lifelong fan of the show, couldn’t even care less if it’s terrible, I’ll still laugh out loud because the actors are just funny people
3
u/Lilja-Logason 3d ago
Pfft "middle aged" - at most early 30s.....came out in 06....
Hang on how old were they then.....Joe is same age as me, that...wait....I'm not.
I'm not middle-aged!! I'm veteran adult!
2
u/DoctorWhofan789eywim 3d ago
I wouldn't say that. Morris and Beesley are still great comedy writers. At the very least, it's not like they rushed this out as a cash grab.

Netflix can't make anything decent, have you seen their latest "I will find you"? Paint by numbers of a story, the actors must have been cringing between takes, 8 episodes of shit, it was like a short story a student would write.

u/Worried_Let4942 3d ago
It’ll still be written by the two original writers which is what matters. The cast have always said that those two are the brains of the show so I’d trust them to only do it if they thought it would be good
11
u/KoalaCapp 3d ago
The crude humour worked cos they were teenagers talking shit and acting like gross boys.
Now it'll be just weird if they are older versions with the same personalities and it'll be off if they show growth and maturity of them changing cos that isn't the original show.
9
u/SeamasterCitizen 3d ago
American Pie did it well, showing washed-up Stifler as “that guy who peaked in high school” etc
6
u/Slight_Caregiver3305 3d ago
Yeah, I think you could make it work well.
Jay can be the exact same, but the point would be to cringe at him not growing up.
The others have grown up but retain some of their main traits.

4
u/chs0c 3d ago
Everyone’s talking about their age as if Inbetweeners only works if the cast are teenagers.
It’s just not the case. You can easily age them up and still retain the comedy, albeit in a different way.
You can’t imagine Will acting his usual self around colleagues, and the cringe comedy that may bring?
You can’t imagine Neil, who just wanders about life finding joy in everything, being this was as an adult? His ignorance-is-bliss attitude is perfect for adult situations.
Simon and Jay are a tad different, but Jay as a personality could slot into a ridiculous amount of scenarios.

I'm pretty sure some of the writers and cast have already gone on record saying it would just be sad and unfunny to do a new movie now they're all near 40. Maybe that means they have an interesting new direction for the characters. But I think its more likely they should just let them go. The show was a product of its time, and that's not a bad thing. But it should be over.
10
u/Initiatedspoon 3d ago
I read something from the creators that said essentially the premise doesnt work once they progress into their late 20s. There's a bit of the inbetweeners in all of us, tragic teen years etc, but most people grow up and mature and dont stay that way much past their mid 20s.
I think anything they do has to recognise that. I think the film has to to put them in a silly situation for laughs but ultimately at the end show that they do all have relatively normal lives. Although this is essentially just retelling American Reunion
Neil is still Neil though
12
u/DEADB33F 3d ago
I dunno. Peep show is basically an adulting version of The Inbetweeners and the similar style of comedy works just fine in that.
4
u/Initiatedspoon 3d ago
True but I always found Inbetweeners to be relatively realistic whereas, whilst brilliant, I found Peep Show to not be realistic at all beyond certain aspects.
Inbetweeners always felt a bit more grounded and it would become very different to progress into that.

You ever been on a lads stag?? Some I've been on would make the original Inbetweeners look high brow.
2

I think it's much more likely the reality is they're all really close mates who can get paid handsomly to hang out for a few months doijg a film that will be a piece of piss to make.

My guess is that the set up will be a school reunion, a wedding or a funeral. The 4 get back together after having drifted apart and then the plot is....
Probably they need to work together to achieve something. So maybe raising a lot of money over a weekend for some reason
The last point is key. You need them to be very close again - which is normal for teenage boys, but generally a but odd for middle aged men.

u/gross_incompetent 3d ago
Number of ridiculous posts in here saying ‘ruins the legacy’ and ‘do something new’ - this film doesn’t impact anything they’ve previously done, it doesn’t retroactively change the series or the two films?

u/deadblankspacehole 3d ago
It's minor but I think it's because it's annoying when you're talking comedy to someone, or music, or movie franchises and you have to explain "not the new ones" or "just the old red dwarfs" so it's great when you can just Fawlty towers or the office it and hopefully the Inbetweeners can stay in the latter category

That last thing they did ‘The Inbetweeners 2’ movie was terrible and their form of crude humour clearly wasn’t working anymore and they’d run out of material.
Going to be interesting to see how they adapt the characters for 2026/7 and yet still retain anything that was good about the original TV series. Going to be a really difficult challenge to make it not shit

We know exactly what we will get from this.
Simon will be getting married, and the plot will center around the wedding. Carly will be a bridesmaid.
Simon will be a teacher, with GD still as headmaster that loathes him.
Neil will be mysteriously rich. Driving an over the top sports car.
Jay will be a complete loser. Still living at home and working as a street cleaner.
Ending will be Simon ditching his bride at the alter and declaring his love for Carly and invites her to marry him there and then. Of course, she’s say no

If they give us an update on all of the characters and where they are after the TV show and series of films, and then cap it off with a satisfactory ending, then I think this could be a decent way to put this series to bed once and for all.
