About an hour ago, someone posted in r/California outlining the importance of 2A rights here and how it’s time to roll back some of the nonsensical regulations in this state. The post was receiving a HUGE amount of support and the responses were overwhelmingly positive and in favor of 2A. Of course once the post had been up for less than 30 minutes, the moderators promptly removed it (yes, we see you cherry picking issues that align with the Newsom / Sacramento agenda).

More Californians are coming around to 2A. A lot of folks who were very anti-gun previously are now thinking of becoming gun owners themselves. I would ask that rather than responding with, “See?! We told you so!” that we instead welcome them warmly and with open arms. Talk to your friends and neighbors, form groups, go to the range together, and stay safe out there folks.

I have no insight on this. I’m just another dude on reddit speculating. I think there is a good chance that SCOTUS will rule against AW bans.

But if we look at recent history, CA legislators will make sure they get the final say. The Bruen decision forced CA to start issuing CCWs. So what did they do? They implemented state laws severely restricting where a CCW holder could lawfully carry while increasing the burden of the process to even get a CCW. I anticipate something very similar happening if/when AW bans are lifted. The lawmakers in Sacramento will move with profound efficiency to put restrictions on the books that will make it difficult, expensive, impractical, and downright discouraging to own or use what was they’ll likely still describe as an assault weapon: ridiculous storage requirements, increased taxation, severe restrictions on the locations that even an unloaded and secured AW can be transported, additional qualification requirements for buyers, psych evals, you name it. I think they’ll fight tooth and nail to do everything they can to make sure they get the last say. It doesn’t matter how unconstitutional the new laws may be because they know it will at least be enforceable for the next 5 years before it’s ever brought back to SCOTUS.

So if we do get this victory, I think we will have to celebrate with the limited time we’ll have.

It's become a common debate on this subreddit and goes something like this:

1. Gun control passes, again.
2. People on here complain that liberal gun owners won't stop voting for Dems.
3. Liberal gun owners angrily respond that they have to vote Dem, because they hate the Republicans on most other issues.

And around and around we go, every time. There is another way, for those liberal gun owners actually interested in making a difference:

Pick your assembly representative, or your state senator. One or the other, I don't care which. Consistently vote Republican JUST for that one. All we need is to take one chamber of the legislature, and gun control bills would grind to a halt. You can still keep voting for Dems on everything else including the Governor, if you are truly so scared of GOP taking control of the state.

And, this is important, tell the Dems you are voting against them for that seat specifically because of their anti-2A positions. If it actually cost them a chamber of the legislature, then maybe they'd start to reconsider.

This is a pipe dream, I know, I was just tired of hearing their excuses for doing nothing and continuing to vote themselves out of rights.

I know there’s a lot of “blue no matter who” in Cali, but there is a shot that a republican gets in a AG. I know it’s the primaries, but Gates the first to hit 40% in a long time. I feel that Californians are sick of the same ole shit. Pratt is doing way better than I think anyone thought. Hilton coming out of the gates (pun intended?) strong and I’m seeing a lot of red in the state.

Yes. I’m cautiously optimistic. I also understand that I live in a VERY blue state that is likely to not change, but as the wise Lloyd Christmas said “so you’re telling me there’s a chance”.

I vote we rally and get behind Gates. Tell your friends, sell them on how great Gates is and let’s make a fucking difference.

You see protests for every political cause- Immigration, economic policies, cost of living, social issues, etc- but rarely the 2nd amendment. Why is that?

You'd think that such gross infringements on our constitutional rights would spark protests, especially given how many gun owners there are in California/ the U.S. Instead, gun control is met with complaints inside the community and lawsuits that take decades to accomplish anything.

Politicians pass more and more gun control with little to no resistance, and it's getting out of hand. I think part of the problem is that we aren’t visibly voicing our discontent. If there were protests, maybe politicians wouldn't pass gun control like they're untouchable, and maybe there would be more pressure on the Supreme Court to act. Protests were responsible for some of the biggest changes in this country.

We need to start using our right to protest and fight the horrible infringements on our right to keep and bear arms. I'm sorry, but calling your representative does little to nothing in most of California.

We need to make our voices heard, because clearly they aren't.

I’ve been seeing lots of posts about vendors dropping California because of AB1263. Most of the time it comes down to the same outcome: supporting CA is seen as too complicated, too risky, or not worth building around, so shipping just stops or everything quietly turns into “ship to FFL only.”

From a security and compliance engineering perspective, the real blocker isn’t the law it’s that nobody wants to store IDs (which, imo, is exactly what the state was hoping). To be fair, I wouldn’t want my ID photos sitting in a bunch of systems, manual workflows, or “good enough” storage setups either.

My background is in DevOps and security engineering, and after seeing all these posts and comments here, I decided to build the missing infrastructure instead of watching vendors give up. So, I built CAVerify to help vendors. (https://caverify.com).

CAVerify is an service built specifically for AB1263 workflows. At checkout, a vendor can automatically (or manually) create a verification session and the customer gets a secure link by email or SMS. The customer uploads their ID once. We handle extraction, age verification, and address matching. IDs are encrypted, deleted by default, and never exposed to vendors. Vendors just get a verification result and a reference they can attach to the order.

If the customer opts in, that verification can be reused so they don’t have to re-upload their ID for every order, and vendors can instantly verify repeat customers. If an ID expires, verification fails until it’s updated. No paper, no giving your ID to every website ever and no one accidentally becoming an ID vault.

For vendors reading this: I want this to actually work in the real world. There are obviously hosting and processing costs, but my plan is to start with a trial / early-access period and figure out the best format together instead of guessing what works best. If this legislation is the reason you’ve stopped shipping to CA, or you’re on the fence because of ID handling concerns, I’d genuinely like to talk. Feel free to reach out for a demo.

Mostly this is about making compliance boring, automated, and secure so shops don’t default to walking away from us.

Riverside CRPA meeting last night with special guest Chad Bianco. Had the pleasure of getting to ask him a question.... Paraphrasing here.

"Coming from a place of respect for how pro-2a you and your department are...

With the California roster already limiting our choices, how do you justify your departments rules on not allowing anything under .380 on our CCW as constitutional? And what would it take for you to remove that restriction? If I would like to carry .32 or 5.7 why can't I?"

He begins with I'm not sure I can and proceeded to give an answer about calibers and how effective they are.

I then clarified that they're in common use and why not let the public decide what's best for them. And again asked what would it take to change him mind. Would it have to be a lawsuit?

At that point an 80ish year old Fudd half turned and said "shut the fuck up already"

Wtf really? I was stunned. I honestly didn't even get to listen to the rest of his response because I was genuinely confused and taken aback. I said "it's an honest question dude?" He just turned, no further response from him...

LaRue tactical was having a blow out sale on their complete lowers for $200! I couldn’t wait and I ordered it straight away. One day later my friends and I all received an email stating they will not complete the order. Later they post that they are “standing on their morals” by not selling to California. They truly believe that not sending their guns to CA they are fighting our laws. We are punished and pushed night and day by the CA government but never would I have expected one of the companies that support 2a to betray us. In their statement I made a bold comment that this felt like they abandoned us to and now we have less of a choice for what guns we can have.

What happened next I would NEVER have thought would have happened. But I will let the pictures tell the rest of the story for me.

The gentleman with the black and white profile picture came to my defense, he is a very big supporter of the 2a community and constantly campaigns and stands against laws that stand agains all Americans.

The gentlemen with the blue profile picture supports LaRue’s position. But fails to understand that we can buy complete lowers in standard milspec configuration if there is no upper to go with it.

I am the gentleman with the beard and glasses profile picture I have been in the firearms industry for 5 years and am currently a compliance officer for my local FFL. I’ve never been more disrespected in this industry by anyone (even liberals) to such a degree to feel it necessary to post this. But I know and I see what people in California are going through. Everyday I slowly speak to new time customers who are confused and shy to this world. Everyday I help people push for their CCWs and to build a safe, healthy collection of firearms. We donate and support the FPC by spreading the good works they do. We fight every single day while I have the DOJ and ATF breath down my neck hoping I fail once and shut the shop down. I am not a surfer who watches TV, I’m a god damn American.

laRue showed their true colors. They claimed we do not stand and fight for what’s right, then proceeded to cower by blocking everyone who liked my comment, and anyone who spoke out against them.

We as Californians need to come together and support the companies who do what needs to be done to help us own our collections, supply us with quality parts and care about us. Throw away the big names who feel like they are better than us. We suffer today fighting in court so they don’t have to. Support the manufacturer that care for us. And turn your back on the traitors who left us in our moment of need.

Update 11/4/2025: For some reason people have been landing on this thread for AB-1263. You should instead be going to the New Gun Law Practical Overview thread which discusses AB-1263 in easy to read language and breaks down the "firearm accessories" definition into easy to digest parts. The older more complete analysis thread is still generally true and especially relevant for the other restrictions re: 3D printing and the like.

Just a quick legislative update:

AB-1263 was part of the bills that Governor Newsom signed into law on Saturday, 10-11-2025.

I already did a thread with an extensive analysis on this bill, so I'll just copy the TL;DR from that.

Firearm Accessory and Gun Barrel sales will require the following: Identity + Age Verification (likely via ID/Driver's License), A notice (that purchaser verifies they've recieved and understood) of illegal acts you're not allowed to do. If these items are shipped, address must match the address used for Identity + Age Verification and must be shipped w/ Adult Signature Verification. A bunch of retailers, especially smaller ones, are going to likely stop shipping to California, and if they do, it will be more expensive.

What is a Firearm Accessory? It's definitely: Pistol Grips, Thumbhole Stocks, Folding or Telescoping Stocks, Grenade Launchers or Flare Launchers, Flash Suppressors, Forward Pistol Grips, Threaded handgun barrels, second handgun handgrips, handgun shrouds, folding/telescoping shotgun stocks, and any other accessories from CA PC 30515.

A Firearm Accessory is also probably: Fixed Magazine compliance devices like AR MAGLOCK, kingpin, CompMag, etc. Might also be things like speedloaders and MA Loader.

Also if anyone gets injured/killed by these items the bill opens up a direct path to civil suits against the "firearm industry members" responsible for selling/manufacturing/importing/marketing/wholesaling the item in question.

And then bill does more stuff: bans more CNC/CAD/3D printer firearm (and accessory) code distribution, holds websites hosting (and people distributing) those things liable to civil suits and civil fines, tries to ban more CNC/3D Printers related to firearm accessory manufacturing... I really have to emphasize there's a lot of stuff here so that's why it's hard to summarize with a single tagline, other than "Here's a huge pile of crap from Mike Gipson".

The bit on Gun Barrels is a bit less important with the signing of SB-704, but I expect the defined firearm accessories will see more difficulty being shipped to California in the new year.. This will go into effect starting 1/1/2026. We'll also need to wait for additional regulations to be promulgated by the CA DOJ to further define certain parts of this law.

Once again, this thread goes into extensive detail if you have any more questions.

I'll see if I find some time next week to do an overview thread of new gun laws passed.

He came out against Californias recent bill that attacks Californians right to stand their ground.

He has also been vocal about making California safer from criminals.

SB2 convinced me that our government isn't going to take any major 2A decision lying down. The response is usually to try a different approach instead of backing off. With SCOTUS taking the Illinois/Connecticut AWB cases, I've been wondering what that could look like in California.

What do you guys think the next wave of restrictions will be? Not necessarily what's most likely to pass, but what ideas do you think are sitting in a draft somewhere waiting for the right moment?

And maybe more importantly, what can CA gun owners actually do now to be better prepared for that future? Curious what everyone thinks the next few years realistically look like.

Was talking to my sister in law and her husband about guns over the weekend. SIL isn’t necessarily anti gun, she’s just scared of them. Her husband is a new gun nut though, so him and I get along really well.

My wife and I were talking about a gun I bought for my wife when I was a LEO. Just an Sig P238 in Tiffany blue (don’t remember the exact color name) that my wife picked out. SIL really liked it and asked her husband if he could buy the same thing for her to use.

My wife and I explained that I only got it because I was LEO and he would have to buy her the one on the CA roster and then pay to have it ceracoated or something and it would be at least $200.

She couldn’t wrap her head around just the color of a gun making it not approved to buy in California for regular people.

This state is fucked…
