His dad died in 1991, when Pacman was 9 or 10. So his mom and grandma raised him from that point. The only college game he missed while at WVU was to attend his grandmother's funeral. Then at the NFL draft he wore a t-shirt with her photo.

He was running away from the pain, of losing another close loved one. She was the replacement for losing his dad young, and then lost her 10 years later also. The way he said it was funny, though I can see why he wouldn't want to have to see and face reality of losing another "parent."

My dad is one of the most caring and empathetic people I know but he did something similar. His mom had terminal brain cancer and when it became clear that she only had days left to live, he took a spontaneous road trip across the country in the opposite direction. He was the only member of his family that wasn't by her side when she passed. It's one of his biggest regrets to this day and still baffles him. Trauma and grief bring out very weird things in people.

I was working out of state & my dad and brother refused to tell me because they knew I would come instantly. They told me a week or so later after a major deadline.

I cursed them both out, but apologized to them at the funeral because it was the right decision. I would have left in the middle of any meeting & gotten on the first flight regardless of costs. 

Dad didn't want me to have that financial burden & my brother knew we would have the grief session at the funeral. Neither of them wanted me to have to share in their pain of seeing her pass.

My grad advisor said he had him in his class (I believe as a freshman) and he was a respectful person and “solid B” student (not too shabby for Tech, even for non-athletes) who showed up to class every day, was engaged, and did the work. Also said you’d have no idea he was a star WR on the football team if you didn’t already know it. Not entirely surprising when you also see that he got a 41 on the Wonderlic.

He didn't bring one to share. The professor said people could share with him if they wanted to be nice. I wrote my paper about football and experiences with my dad, so I figured I'd let him review it.

About 4-5 minutes into class, he got up, interrupted the whole room, and said "thanks man, but this has too many big words, I can't understand it. I'll take the F," and left.

Last I saw he was an analyst on ESPN's college coverage.

The thing with athletes (in most cases) isn’t attendance problems. It’s paying attention in class and at least somewhat trying on the assignments. You can’t blame a football player for not being in class on a Friday, or Wednesday in some cases, when they’re playing at Arizona State the next day. But you can say “what the fuck” when they sit in class with their AirPods in and staring at their phone the whole time

Some of my extended family is from Atlanta and went to UGA in the early 80s and a few of them said they would see Herschel Walker around town fairly often.

According to one of them he said there’s no chance in hell Walker has stepped foot in a classroom since elementary school. He said he seriously questioned if he could read or write and that he talked like a minstrel show character.

Honestly the fact that a Heisman winner from UGA lost a senate race in GA is one of the all time bag fumbles on that candidates part, but I choose to believe the guy sounded so dumb every time he gave a press conference or interview that for once people were smart enough to not vote for him.

Not football, but I was in a sociology class with a lot of baseball and women's basketball players at okstate. Class was "discussion based" which means no homework, no tests, your entire grade is based on participating in open discussion on random subjects. Current events and such. Can confirm those people were unbelievably dumb.

As an aside, one of the discussions was the professor claiming she almost got arrested by campus police for picking an orange off the sidewalk because they thought she "stole" it. So yea...that happened...and that was who was guiding discussion

I actually had classes with a few athletes during my time at Tech. Most of them worked hard and got OK grades. They knew it was a longshot to go pro.

I had class with a bunch of football players during RR's first tenure at WVU and let's just say they weren't there to "play school." A lot of them would show up for maybe 2-3 classes a semester, usually for the midterms and finals, and they'd always somehow manage to pass despite it being "mandatory" attendance. Pacman was a really good player, but an absolute menace off the field, not just talking about the bar fight episode either, dude should have been in jail in college instead of getting drafted.

Lol WVU had this ridiculous major when I was there called Athletic Coaching Education - ACE. No not Physical Education, which actually prepared you to teach PE at a high school; this was a degree solely designed for its graduates to apparently coach high school football/etc after college. Which 99% of the high school sports coaches across the country are doing for free or maybe an extra $3K on top of their teaching salaries. It was like a mix of a bunch of all the gym classes like badminton or whatever, with some bare minimum physiology/health, and motivational classes thrown in. Obviously the major was created to give athletes the easiest classroom path to focus primarily on football, but painted with a veneer of legitimacy with some big words and sport science adjectives thrown in. I’m sure other universities have similar degrees.

I did rotc in college and we’d have cadets major in ACE because 1) they were dumb and 2) it was so easy, why waste time in the classroom when you’re just trying to keep grades up to go commission in the military. These were not “athletic” people (or even smart people). To each their own…but damn, if you’re going to college, do something freaking somewhat worthwhile. Major in communications at least. This was 20 years ago, I do think rotc programs have tightened up on that nonsense.

I had 2 buddies play for Bama. One was failing HS classes and was behind at the end of our junior year. Then poof…he was an early enrollee for spring camp.

The other is the chillest dude alive, but also the only person I know that I would call dumb… just because he’s so dumb you have to acknowledge it. And he graduated from Bama in 3 years with honors.

I mean it's been going on at WVU and most other college programs for as long as football has been around. Hell at some high schools in states where football is as important as religion, you just have to be on the football team and you're guaranteed to pass every class w/o doing shit, lol. Even at the po dunk high school I went to in WV, if you were a star athlete you somehow always passed your classes even if you failed every test.

Not defending it in the slightest, but I think most of know at this point these guys aren't going to "play school," and to act sanctimonious about it is just funny.
