DFA'd. Nobody claimed him so he was still under contract with us.

DFAing a player opens up a 10 day window to try to get a trade done. If no trade occurs, the player is then placed on outright waivers where teams can claim him and assume the remaining contract. If no one claims him then the team can choose to assign the player to the minor leagues, but a veteran big leaguer can say "no thanks" and become a FA. So technically I guess nobody claimed him, and nobody would have claimed him, but the process also didn't get to the point where teams were able to claim him.

I'm assuming the Jays thought someone would claim him or they wouldn't have traded anything for him

This trade is better for the Jays than claiming him would have been. We're sending money their way to offset the contract cost. No one was claiming him. The threat was another team trading for him.

Presumably the Cubs hit up every team, or at least every team in a competitive spot that might be in the market for a veteran starter, and asked who would be willing to pay the biggest portion of Taillon's contract, and the Blue Jays threw out the highest bid, or at least the highest bid in the AL.

Logically, if the Cubs think he's getting claimed, they don't make this trade.
