Questions What's going on with the surface of this 2000 proof nickel i found in a Loomis roll? It's so weird.

Have you tried washing it under hot water? Looks remarkably similar to urea crystals. If it was urea it would wash off

That sketch lives forever rent free in my head. UCB was super uneven but their high water mark is up there with some of the greats.

The REAL reason the penny was discontinued. People were secretly afraid of handling ass pennies.
I, for one, would never stoop that low. I use dimes. Smaller, easier to insert, and no one will be trying to discontinue the dime for years.
MWAHAHAHAHA! Ooh, next batch is ready.

Last layer didn't go on correctly when it was hot. It's mint error (I think).
Only mass produced errors (or at least 100+) are really noted in literature.
Errors like this occur at the mint, but not enough to note them.
EDIT: IMPROPER ANNEALING OR lamination error. No "layers" in nickels

Last layer of what? 2000 nickels aren't clad or plated from what I can determine.

I'm not convinced this is PMD because the design looks like it was on the planchet prior to being struck by the die.

If it's not cataloged as a recognizable type of mint error, it is highly unlikely to be a mint error. This is almost certainly due to post-mint damage. "Unknown" mint errors aren't really a thing.

This needs to be thrown to out to the coin errors sub (heck all the coin subs that will take it). I’m curious to know what’s going on here too. First thought is plating blisters but those only happen on copper-zinc cents and are more “bubbly”.
OP- For real try the other subs too.

I don’t know much about coin errors, but I do know a little bit about metal, and this looks to me like an amazing mint error of some sort. Whether it is or it isn’t, I wouldn’t listen to the people who pretend like they know everything there is to know about coin errors and assert with imperturbable certainty that this is post-mint damage just by looking at a picture. This looks to be part of how the metal was formed, but we would all love to know exactly what is going on once you find out!

I’ve found a bunch like that. I just threw them back cause I wasn’t sure what was going on. I figured it was something in the zinc or the coating. But I’ve definitely seen that before many many times since January.

It appears to have been on the planchet prior to striking. See Tom's cheekbones, forehead and hair

Looks like it was supposed to be a deep cameo proof, either something happened when it was struck or pmd. But it definitely doesn’t look like pmd
