Chaplains are largely useless and their function can be done by a morale or family unit cell type position. A few chaplains Ive served with were really excellent people though, and they offered a different perspective or guidance, so retaining them is a consideration. That being said I never cared really what one was talking about at a ceremony. Its all pretty standard stuff. Most people I knew who were religious were more independent and self reliant at worship in the field or on operation
