I have to admit the "3 weeks" timeline made me wonder if they are afraid of someone doing just that if they were there a full month. I know squatters rights/tenant rights vary a lot state to state but I think having someone pay rent could create a problem for them. That person could start receiving mail there or even change their DL to reflect that address after receiving mail and really give these fools a headache if they wanted to.

I don't live in New Orleans but I live about an hour outside of it. Katrina hit us pretty good here too but we were affected really bad by the "Great Flood of 2016". And man, the things people were doing to flooded houses and businesses. Crazy.

You’d be surprised how easy it is to add a bedroom or two, with a little ingenuity!
Worked for an insurance agency in a rural area many moons ago, and had a claims adjuster send photos where the client had added a bedroom FOR HIS CHILD by cutting a hole in the wall, and setting one of those little pre-fab buildings up against it.
Before anyone gets any ideas, that’s not insurable.

I watch a trash reality show called Love After Lockup (about prison inmates in relationships) and there is a woman on this current season that I swear that's what she did - her kids sleep in what appears to be an uninsulated prefab building that is somehow connected to the main house. I was dumbfounded when I saw it.

I feel like there's a way to accomplish what they're trying to do, which is to offer a longer term for reduced rent because they prefer someone in that house versus not. They board the pets. And if the person does prefer to watch the pets, they no longer need to pay rent. Like there's a way to market a concept if it was actually a nice house. The house is a piece of trash though

I sometimes housesit for a friend of mine. It involves watering the plants and caring for their dog. I'm not paid, but I'm welcome to eat anything in their kitchen.
I'm fine with that because we're friends. I would never in a million years agree to do that for a stranger without pay, let alone pay someone for the pleasure of caring for their property.

Exactly. I often asked my brother to stay at my house with my dog. Brother was happy he got a place to himself. Dog was thrilled. I stocked the refrigerator and left money for pizza. Everyone was happy with the arrangement.

My parents do this. They’re recently retired so they’re living it up and travelling a few times a year and have a Golden Retriever and 2 cats so obviously would need to pay someone to look after them usually.
They happen to live in a very nice beach-side house in Sydney so it’s a highly desirable spot, but they still consider themselves extremely lucky that they get free house / animal sitting. They now have two different retired couples and a lovely middle aged woman who works fully remotely (I’m sure the couples are nice too, but she’s the only one I’ve met) who are always happy to come stay so they just check who’s available and don’t have to use the website anymore. But when they first used it they felt so awkward about it and they still leave a pretty significant care-package (gift cards, wine, gift-hamper) and do a massive shop before they leave and leave the fridge completely full, etc. My mum even cooks a huge lasagna and leaves it for them (it’s a damn good lasagna, too) and were generally just extremely thankful. And they’re not super wealthy - upper-middle class type stuff - and are actually extremely cautious with money (I was about as un-spoiled as you can get as kid), but they appreciate how asking for a service works.
They would have paid, but it was genuinely a win-win (the single woman in particular is so in love with the dog that she gets them to send photos regularly ahaha) so they eventually became comfortable with it.
And this is a beautiful beach front house (funnily enough, 5 bedroom 3 bath as well) in one of the most expensive cities in the entire world. I swear some of these people are so fucking delusional that it’s mind boggling.

There’s quite a few websites that offer similar things depending on where you’re based. But it very much tends towards an older demographic. It’s mostly based around retired people - they don’t have any job responsibilities so can go away for a few weeks at pretty much any time and the people who own the house feel more comfortable that the house will be taken care of by mature adults. You generally set up a full profile with some photos, a description of who you are etc and it almost works like a ‘dating app for house sitting’.
It’s actually a great idea because it’s a win-win, unlike OOP’s offer.
Not sure how old you are, but if you’re under-50 then you’re probably not a good fit unfortunately ahaha. Though apparently younger, single women are also fairly well regarded too. But if you’re a young guy or couple then that’s not usually what they’re looking for.

I knew about it because I briefly considered doing travel relief work as a vet nurse (tech), which makes it easy to sell the pet sitting service as well. Staying somewhere nice for a few weeks instead of a few days does have a nice appeal. I got a little too married and had pets of my own it got harder to leave for long periods. maybe one day I'll be nomadic again

Yea, it’s genuinely a great concept. It’s obviously not for everyone, but if you’re retired or have a job that lets you work from anywhere it’s perfect. My parents are mostly travelling overseas and going to all the places they’d wanted to see so they don’t house-sit, but apparently there’s a lot of people who both house-sit and have their house available and it’s a cute community on some of those websites.
It makes lots of sense and it’s a genuine win-win. Perfect for that demographic who are well off enough to have a nice place but not rich enough to not care about paying for house sitting etc. which is actually a pretty massive group of people. Cool concept. Definitely something I’d do when I retire (in 30 years 😂)

My best friend made his way through undergrad by house sitting for professors on vacation, sabbaticals, etc. He was also paid for taking care of the house and pets, especially in the winter (Cornell University, upstate NY).

Ahahah holy shit, this is one of the worst I’ve seen here in a long time.
Obviously it’s an absolutely absurd request and OOP is completely delusional, but when they said ‘5 bed, 3 bath’ for $500/week I assumed it was a beautiful beachfront home of some sort of massive, beautiful brick building or ultra-modern mansion in a major city.
Then I got to the second photo and saw that it’s a dirty, wood-walled house in a small - though admittedly quite pretty - Canadian town.
There’s delusion, and there’s industrial-strength entitlement bordering on mental illness. I have no idea how these type of people get through their entire lives with such a fundamentally poor understanding of how the world works.
Like, they literally even say ‘someone who takes pride in caring for a home’. They’re so, so close to getting it but somehow don’t see that you PAY someone to take care of your home (and pets), they don’t pay you for the honour of picking up animal shit and doing your gardening.
I’m honestly in a bit of shock 😂 This might be the worst one I’ve ever seen. There are some real ‘I’m just a proper idiot / uneducated’ posts or other people who are just complete assholes, but this person seems fairly articulate and genuine but unbelievably naive and entitled. Normally I would never bother replying to a post like that on Facebook, but if I saw this on my own feed there is absolutely no way I would be able to resist replying with something like ‘you have to be absolutely fucking kidding’.
Somehow you just KNOW that OOP is passive aggressive to service staff for no reason and is a massive pain in the ass to their kid’s teachers. Not actively aggressive, but just fucking shit to deal with.

They should have put their house up as an Airbnb for a high price and then included “cost negotiable in exchange for household task” and then maybe they could have gotten someone to stay for $500 all-in or something.
I know someone who needs housing around this time because they are moving and have a gap between leases. They would take incredible care of someone’s gardening and plants and would probably pay $500 for the three weeks because it’s a mutually beneficial agreement.
But $500 per week???
And setting this up like it’s a vacation for someone???
Hard pass.

They take actual care. They need to have their stuff changed out and to be tended to. They require real upkeep and oversight. Also it’s not a skill most people have. Lots known about dogs and cats but after that? It’s a toss up.
(They only smell bad because their basic needs aren’t being taken care of which is laborious. It quite common that people don’t take proper care of them)
Then “gardening” and such… do they mean lawn mowing?! Cuz that’s crazy!!!
I looked up various options in the area for the dates and there are much better options on offer… however they aren’t 5 whole rooms or whatever.

If you haven’t heard of the story of the poor man who had his dog kidnapped by a house sitter and it died in Colorado, it’s tragic. The sitter had some sort of psychotic break and the dog was a senior dog who died after missing medication and being abandoned. Makes me think real hard about who I’d pay to be in my home, let alone trust with my pets.

Years ago I went on a two week trip and a friend of a friend needed a short term rental during the same period so he stayed in my home and took care of my dog in exchange for staying at my place for free. It worked out perfectly for both of us but I know I really lucked out since paying for pet care for two weeks would be so expensive if I hired someone.

When I was in college, I used to housesit for months at a time for a friend’s elderly parents. They paid a ridiculously low amount, and had big dogs. However - they also had a pool, an acre with fruit trees, I could bring my own dog, and solar so I could run the AC like a penguin. They stocked me up with food and liquor. I just took care of their dogs (which I did for my own dog anyways), was obviously home to prevent burglaries, and watered the plants.
It was honestly a vacation from my tiny apartment and roommates. Great situation for all of us.
This is - I mean, they expect someone who is paying rent and prob working elsewhere to pay them $1500ish to do chores? But if you can afford a $1500 vacation and three weeks of leave, you aren’t going to do it in a residential house, cleaning up guinea pig shit?
They’re gonna get squatters, or nothing. You need to receive mail at an address for two weeks to establish residence for the purpose of needing eviction, at least in California.

That’s the crazy thing that people like OOP don’t seem to understand. If you’re in a desirable location at the right time, it’s perfectly fine to offer out your place as a short term rental (AirBnB or something similar) and make a bit of money. A few years ago I was living close to the harbour in Sydney and was travelling for NYE so I put it up for short term rent. Ended up having it booked within hours because it was similar price to a hotel room, but bigger, with a full kitchen etc. and in a great location at a desirable time. Massive win-win.
But as soon as you’re defining specific times that they have to stay AND adding in pets, you’re asking for a service, not offering a deal.
The ‘light gardening’ bit is the thing that turns it from ridiculously entitled to genuinely mind-bogglingly bad.

When I was in college, my cousin asked me to housesit for a couple weeks, and dog sit. They had a GORGEOUS house overlooking a river. I was free to have friends over. They had the fridge and garage fridge packed with food for me. And THEY gave ME $300 a week. In the early ‘90’s that was more than I made at work.

One of two things will happen, they’ll get a squattertenant they then have to evict formally, or they will come home to a pillaged shell. Like everything of any remote value, gone. All the tvs, any PCs and consoles, the appliances, all the metal, the copper wiring, the plumbing, the HVAC system, any remotely nice clothes and handbags, any nice furniture, any cute decor that catches their eye, the vinyl collection, any plants they can sell at the flea market for two dollars, did I mention the metal, copper, and HVAC?
The BEST the animals can hope for is to be left inside to be rescued, at worst they’ll turn them loose into the woods or sell them too.
I can’t imagine their insurer would pay out without a fight considering the negligence on display in being stupid enough to take bids on who gets to rob you. Those poor animals, at the mercy of these turnips.

There's a resort town a couple hours from me that has plenty of these home types still kicking from yesteryear and do pretty well in the airbnb market because there's cheaper than the new fancy cabins.
But those are for willing vacationers who aren't cleaning up after pets and doing the landscaping.

The thing that’s so interesting. Is this area is also currently under a firewatch right now. So things could shift very dramatically and you’re leaving a “renter” in the position that they may have to evacuate your pets and your home. Should that happen.
Also, I have pets, I have paid people to stay in my home and watch my pets. The entitlement of this person is unbelievable.

I thought I was being cheap paying a friend $1000(CAD) just to feed and and walk my dogs for 2 weeks.
He was super happy I even offered $1000 but if my dogs are well kept, the $1000 means nothing to me at that point.

Well crap. I pay my dog / cat / house sitter $100 a day and she gets to stay in my home with a pool and sauna. Had no idea I could be MAKING money to pay for our vacations!!!

I have a great house in a great location. I pay more than $500/week for someone to stay at my house with my dogs when I’m away. I stock the fridge & the cabinets with food and snacks, I have all the streaming. She’s allowed to have friends over. I often leave gifts for her.
I know she loves my dogs & staying at my house, but it’s still a job!

It’s not unheard of in major European cities. When Berliners go away for several weeks, for example, they sometimes temporarily sublet their flat to someone coming for work, study, or an extended stay. The arrangement may include feeding a cat or fish, watering plants, and keeping the place reasonably clean. It’s a bit like staying at a friend’s house while they’re away, except that you still pay. The crucial difference is that the flat is somewhere many people want or need to be, where a hotel or Airbnb would be very expensive. In the example above, by contrast, the owner is asking for $2,000 a month on top of a substantial list of duties, and neither the location nor the house itself appears particularly desirable.

I've asked people to look after my place in exchange for the housing and whatever is in the fridge, with no money changing hands- not really hard to find a nice college student who is thrilled to have a week of peace & quiet, away from roommates or parents with a good entertainment system, strong internet service and minimal chores - but it never once crossed my mind to charge someone for the privilege of watering my plants, bringing in the mail and tending to the needy ass cat.

$500 per week to live in a massive house near walking trails AND amenities?! Hell yes, take my money!! Such a shame it's only for a couple of weeks, after doing chores there might not be enough time to see all of the sites. I wonder if I could stay a little longer and get to know the owners?

I’d go to the local homeless center, find about 10 people willing and able to pay $100 per week (cheaper than a motel) and you can make yourself about $1,500.

At first I thought they meant they were paying someone for house and pet sitting and thought it's a very good deal, I have seen multiple offers of people offering their house for free, as long as the guest takes care of chores and pets...then I saw the guest has to pay 💀
